Kota Belud students Join ‘Let's Be Safe' campaign
Students listening attentively to a safe riding instructor speaking on key safety checks to ensure motorcycles are in proper condition and fit for use. KOTA BELUD (May 27): A total of 500 students from nine secondary schools in Sabah's northern Kota Belud district came together on Tuesday for a meaningful and engaging safety awareness programme called the 'Let's Be Safe' Safety Campaign. Driven by oil and gas company Hibiscus Petroleum, the programme was organised in collaboration with the Sabah Education Department (JPNS), through its Kota Belud District Education Office, and working with the police and Fire and Rescue Department. Held at SMK Usukan, the half-day event was aimed at instilling a culture of safety among Form Three students — a crucial age group as they become more independent in their daily lives. The schools that took part were SMK Usukan, SMKA Tun Said, SMK Taun Gusi, SMK Taun Gusi II, SMK Arshad, SMK Narinang, SMK Tambulion, SMK Pekan and SMK Pekan II. The programme featured interactive demonstrations and informative talks designed to help students understand personal safety, accident prevention and risk awareness both online and offline. The highlights of the campaign included live demonstrations by firemen where students learned what actions to take in the event a fire takes place or to prevent them, as well as a demonstration on safe motorcycle riding. Besides that, the students also listened attentively to a talk by the police which covered social media safety, including on topics that touched on cyberbullying, physical bullying and online scams. There were also talks on fire safety and natural disaster preparedness, particularly floods, by the Fire and Rescue Department while a safe riding awareness session helped to promote responsible behaviour among young motorcyclists. The campaign carried the central message that safety is a lifelong habit and that being aware of risks in different environments — at school, at home, and in public — is key to staying safe. Students were encouraged to identify potential threats and take proactive steps to protect themselves and others. Sabah Education Director Datuk Haji Raisin bin Saidin, who was the guest of honour, highlighted the importance of the initiative in nurturing a safety-first mindset among young people wherever they may be. Raisin hoped that the students can cultivate awareness, skills and a mindset that prioritises safety at all times, enabling them to focus on their studies and, ultimately, on becoming well-rounded individuals. 'The three main focuses of this year's programme namely social media safety awareness, including awareness on cyberbullying and physical bullying; awareness on safe motorcycle riding; and awareness on fire prevention and natural disaster (flood), are in line with the aspirations of the Education Ministry, which consistently ensures the well-being and safety of students. 'Our highest appreciation and thanks go to Hibiscus Petroleum, the Kota Belud District Education Office, and all parties involved in making this awareness campaign a success. 'The collaboration between government departments and agencies with the private sector is a good example of how various sectors can work together to shape a safer and more knowledgeable generation,' he added. His speech was delivered by JPNS Student Development Sector Assistant Director Charles Lawrence @ Muhammad Ariffin. Hibiscus Petroleum's Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Acting Head, Sabah, Mohammad Hatta Mansor said the campaign was an example of the company's efforts aimed at raising safety awareness among young people. This, he said, was through the sharing of messages and guidance centred around safety — a vital component and priority of Hibiscus Petroleum's day-to-day operations. 'This campaign is designed as a platform for disseminating safety messages, focusing on issues and threats related to personal safety at home, at school, in public spaces and online,' he said in his closing speech. 'The goal is to help secondary school students, as they are the target group that needs early guidance and exposure to personal safety — as the Malay proverb says, 'melentur buluh, biarlah dari rebungnya (to bend a bamboo, start when it is still a shoot)',' he added. Hatta urged all the students, who were now 'safety ambassadors' after taking part in the safety campaign, to continue applying the safety tips they learned in the programme besides spreading safety awareness to their friends and family members. Also present at the event were Kota Belud District Education Officer Dr Japran Hj Kusin and Hibiscus Petroleum's Community & Government Relations Senior Executive Durie Rainer Fong.

Zainul (centre) with the Wakalah Zakat recipients, Rumah Anak Yatim Kudat (Baitul Hidayah) manager Awang Lahaji Rokimin (left) and Rumah Anak Yatim Dan Asnaf Kg Silad Ranau manager Ustaz Hj Mohd Hainin Abdullah (right). KOTA KINABALU (April 23): Hibiscus Petroleum on Wednesday announced two Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes in Sabah for this year, in line with the company's goal of shaping a sustainable future. The first initiative is the Super Sarapan programme, aims at reducing food insecurity by ensuring students receive at least one meal while at school, while the second initiative, the Mangrove Preservation Project, seeks to raise awareness about the importance of caring for coastal forests for future generations. Hibiscus began sponsoring the Super Sarapan programme in 2024 with two schools — SK Tok Bali and SK Dalam Rhu in Tok Bali, Kelantan — benefiting a total of 80 recipients (40 students per school). This year, Hibiscus will continue its sponsorship and expand the programme to Sabah by adding two more schools: SK Tamau and SMK Usukan, both located in the Kota Belud district, which falls within Hibiscus' area of operations. The programme in Sabah will also benefit 80 recipients (40 students per school). At the same time, the programme is also being implemented in another school in Kelantan — SMK Cherang Ruku — bringing the total number of sponsored students to 200. Under the second initiative, Hibiscus Malaysia will collaborate with the Sabah Wetlands Conservation Society (SWCS) to implement this project, which includes a series of activities in three mangrove-rich districts: Tuaran, Papar and Kota Marudu. These activities are designed to highlight the significance of mangrove swamp forests, promote mangrove restoration and protection efforts, and educate participants about the sustainable use of mangrove resources. The campaign, which will run throughout this year, will involve 150 secondary school students, 60 teachers and members of the local communities in the three districts. Hibiscus Petroleum Berhad chairman Zainul Rahim Mohd Zain said in his speech that Hibiscus Petroleum remains committed to giving back to the communities in which it operates. In his speech during the Hibiscus Raya Open House at Le Meridien on Wednesday, Zainul said that last year, they had impacted over 40,000 people through initiatives in healthcare, education and the environment. He also said that, as part of their commitment to community development in Sabah, they had launched several impactful CSR initiatives. These include empowering 20 B40 women in Kudat and Kota Marudu with tailoring skills; engaging 150 students and 60 teachers in a mangrove preservation outreach across Sabah; and promoting safety awareness among 500 students in Kota Belud through the upcoming Safe Programme. 'We have expanded our Super Sarapan breakfast initiative for underprivileged students, extended free HPV screenings to over 5,000 individuals since 2021, and sponsored renewable energy access for 124 homes in Kampung Paus, Ranau,' he said. He added that these initiatives reflect their focus on education, health, safety, the environment and sustainable upliftment. Similarly, Hibiscus Petroleum has also supported over 8,000 underprivileged individuals through its Hibiscus Wakalah programme, he said. Zainul shared that Hibiscus Petroleum has been operating for nearly 14 years, and has successfully integrated as Hibiscus Malaysia. He announced that they achieved RM2.7 billion in revenue for the financial year 2024, their second consecutive year surpassing RM2 billion. 'We also reached a new record in production, with an average of 20,912 boe/day,' he said. Aside from that, in June 2024, they completed the acquisition of TotalEnergies Brunei, increasing their gas production, he said. He added that they are committed to supporting Brunei's national aspirations under Wawasan Brunei 2035, particularly in the areas of economic diversification, sustainable development, and growing human capital. 'As part of this commitment, on 16 April 2025, we entered into a long-term USD 100 million financing facilities agreement with two prominent Bruneian banks — Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam and Baiduri Bank — marking a significant step forward in strengthening local partnerships and retaining in-country value, as well as contributing meaningfully to Brunei's economic ecosystem,' he said. Zainul also shared that in July 2024, they received their first direct PSC from Petronas. 'These ventures have strengthened our market position and will help us continue to thrive in a competitive industry,' he said. He added that they have also signed a 20-year extension agreement for the PM3CAA PSC. 'This contract extension will maintain production from existing fields, enable the development of discovered fields, and support further exploration in the Malaysia-Vietnam Commercial Arrangement Area,' he said.
