Kyle Higashioka returns to The Bronx: ‘it seems like I never left'
Access the Yankees beat like never before Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Greg Joyce about the inside buzz on the Yankees. Try it free Kyle Higashioka was back at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday for the first time since he was sent to San Diego as part of the trade that brought Juan Soto to The Bronx. 'In some ways, it seems like I never left,'' said Higashioka, now with the Rangers, who did not play in the Yankees' 5-2 series-opening win. Advertisement Higashioka, 35, was talking about seeing familiar faces around the ballpark, but he could have been referring to Aaron Judge, his longtime former teammate. The two overlapped at various points in the Yankees minor league system and then with the Yankees in the majors from 2017 until Higashioka's trade to the Padres following the '23 season after 16 years with the organization. So not many players have seen Judge's rise through the game from up close more than Higashioka. Advertisement 'I would say it's incredible, but from playing with him for so long, you almost assume it's something that's possible,'' Higashioka said of Judge's start, which saw the right fielder leading the majors in just about every offensive category. 'So it's not that incredible because it's him,'' said Higashioka, now Jonah Heim's backup in Texas. 'It's cool to see.' Advertisement 'For him to continue to get better every single year, especially after you think it can't get better than 62, he's one of the greatest ever,' Higashioka said of Judge, who went 2-or-4 with a two-run homer in Tuesday's win. Kyle Higashioka gestures to the dugout after hitting a single during a game earlier this season. Cary Edmondson-Imagn Images Though the catcher wasn't in the lineup, he was tasked with game-planning against Judge on May 26 last season with the Padres. Judge singled in his first at-bat of that game against Joe Musgrove, flied to center in the fourth inning and struck out in the sixth before Higashioka was removed for a pinch hitter. Advertisement Asked about the challenge of dealing with Judge as an opponent, Higashioka said, 'It's always tough. They have a really good lineup, but that's baseball. It's my job. We've got to find a way to get past these guys.'

Rangers place C Kyle Higashioka on injured list
May 1 - The Texas Rangers placed catcher Kyle Higashioka on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a mild left intercostal strain. The move is retroactive to Wednesday, one day after Higashioka sustained the rib injury while running out a three-run double in the eighth inning of the Rangers' 15-2 victory over the Athletics. Higashioka, 35, is batting .254 with one homer and eight RBIs in 17 games in his first season with Texas. He signed a two-year deal in free agency in December. Higashioka is a career .214 hitter with 58 homers and 174 RBIs in 415 games with the New York Yankees (2017-23), San Diego Padres (2024) and Rangers. In a corresponding move, the Rangers recalled right-handed pitcher Caleb Boushley from Triple-A Round Rock. Boushley, 31, has a 5.87 ERA in three relief appearances this season with Texas. He made his major league debut with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2023 and pitched in two games for the Minnesota Twins in 2024. --Field Level Media
