Egypt FM intensifies talks with US senators over Gaza crisis, bilateral ties

Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty has intensified his talks with key US senators in Washington, meeting separately with Senators Ted Cruz, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Chris Coons, ranking member of the Senate Defence Appropriations Subcommittee and a member of the Foreign Relations Committee. This included discussions regarding cooperation in security and counterterrorism, as well as consultations on several regional issues of mutual interest. During the meetings, they discussed the latest developments in Gaza, with FM Abdelatty reviewing Egypt's intensive efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement and to facilitate the exchange of captives and detainees, in coordination with Qatar and the United States. He also emphasized the urgency of accelerating the influx of humanitarian aid into the strip to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian civilians under the famine. Moreover, Abdelatty underscored the importance of establishing a political horizon that leads to implementing the two-state solution and establishing an independent Palestinian state along the 4 June 1967 borders. The discussions also touched on the latest developments in other regional hotspots, including Sudan, Yemen, Syria, and Lebanon. Egypt's top diplomat reaffirmed Egypt's support for Sudanese state institutions and the necessity of respecting Sudan's sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity. He also highlighted the need for restoring maritime security in the Red Sea, describing it as a vital strategic artery for global trade. Furthermore, Abdelatty articulated Egypt's concerns regarding the Nile River and its water security, affirming Egypt's consistent position on adherence to international law concerning shared water resources. He also highlighted the importance of cooperation based on consensus and mutual benefit to serve the interests of all Nile Basin countries, rejecting all unilateral actions that violate international law. "Egypt will take all necessary measures guaranteed under international law to protect its water security," he asserted. He reiterated Egypt's firm stance that calls for de-escalation in the Middle East and rejects military solutions to conflicts. He further stressed the importance of pursuing diplomatic avenues regarding Iran's nuclear programme to maintain regional and international security and stability. On Wednesday, Abdelatty met with US Senators Lindsey Graham, Brian Schatz, Roger Wicker, and David McCormick during his visit to the United States and after participating in the United Nations High-Level International Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution.
