High Winds impact Siouxland: How to stay safe during a wind event
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — It's been a windy past few days in Siouxland with many seeing gusts as high as 40-50+ mph at times and Wind Advisories and High Wind Warnings issued across all of the KCAU 9 viewing area. There's even been reports of trees being downed by the strong winds, including out in Remsen, Iowa. With that in mind, it's important to know how to prepare and stay safe during wind events such as these. First of all, we'll start with a quick refresher on wind alert terminology. The National Weather Service issues a few different alerts for strong winds in Siouxland: High Wind Warning: Take Action! Sustained, strong winds with even stronger gusts are happening. Seek shelter. If you are driving, keep both hands on the wheels and slow down. NWS offices issue this product based on local criteria. High Wind Watch: Be Prepared! Sustained, strong winds are possible. Secure loose outdoor items and adjust plans as necessary so you're not caught outside. NWS offices issue this product based on local criteria. Wind Advisory: Take Action! Strong winds are occurring but are not so strong as to warrant a High Wind Warning. Objects that are outdoors should be secured and caution should be taken if driving. NWS offices issue this product based on local criteria. Before High Wind Warnings or Wind Advisories are even issued, it's important to prepare your home, inside and out. This includes: Trimming trees/tree branches away from your home & powerlines Secure, repair, or replace loose gutters/shutters Charge batteries of all essential items such as cell phones and booster packs, weather radios and power tools such as a reciprocating saw, which you might need to clear debris. Make a list of items outside your home you will need to tie down or put away so that they don't blow away or fly through a window. Remove any dead trees or overhanging branches near structures, loose roofing materials and objects in yards, patios, roofs or balconies that could blow away. During a High Wind event: Secure outdoor items that may be easily blown away or blown into your home to avoid damage or injury once the wind starts picking up. Watch for falling debris and tree limbs. If you are driving, hold the steering wheel with both hands and slow down. Keep a distance from high profile vehicles such as trucks, buses and vehicles towing trailers. One strong gust of wind can be enough to flip one of these trailers onto its side. And of course, after a High Wind event Avoid trees, power lines, and the side of the road. Keep in mind that power lines that are laying on the ground may be live. Do not go near them! Report downed power lines to 911 immediately. Continue to listen to the local news and NOAA Weather Radio for updates following the storm. If you lose power and are using a generator, be sure to review generator safety tips. Be careful when handling debris that may have blown into your yard. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Storm Center PM Update: Wind and Rain Hanging Around
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — It has continued to be an active day across KELOLAND as a low pressure system moves into North Dakota. While it has been a noticeably cooler day with scattered showers and thunderstorms that have brought some much needed rain. Another big headline today was the strong winds, gusts greater than 50 MPH have been reported in multiple parts of KELOLAND. Wind Advisories and High Wind Warnings will be extended into the overnight hours and tomorrow. Gusts greater than 60 MPH are possible for those in the High Wind Warning. More chances for rain will continue tonight with lows near seasonable in the 40s. The strong winds will keep bringing in cooler air as we head into tomorrow. Highs will be below average and as the low slowly moves off, more rain showers are possible across KELOLAND during the day. An extra 1 to 2 inches of rain is possible for northern South Dakota, while other areas will stay below those values. By Saturday, we will start to dry out with clouds decreasing. Winds will calm down, but become breezy at times and highs are looking to stay in the 60s before a warm up for next weekend. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 1,250 acre Silver Fire burning near Bishop prompts evacuation orders, warnings in Inyo, Mono counties
A rapidly growing wildfire has prompted evacuation orders for residents of Inyo and Mono Counties, according to Cal Fire officials . The blaze, which is being called the Silver Fire, was reported at around 2:10 p.m. on Sunday near Highway 6 and Silver Canyon Road, just north of Bishop. As of Monday morning, Cal Fire reported the fire had grown to 1,250 acres and was 0% contained. Fire officials said overnight air and ground resources have been "significantly increased" to help firefighting efforts. "However, strong winds—gusting up to 35 mph at Bishop Airport—continue to create challenges, grounding some firefighting aircraft and complicating containment operations," Cal Fire said. Evacuation orders were issued for several communities, including the White Mountain Estates Neighborhood, Laws in Inyo County and Chalfant in Mono County. "A 30-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 6 has been closed for public safety," Cal Fire said. Strong winds currently blowing in the area have caused the flames to spread quickly and "have created hazardous conditions," Cal Fire officials said. The Bishop Senior Center on 682 Spruce St. is being used as an evacuation center. Residents maybe take their pets to the TriCounty Fair Grounds on 475 Sierra St., which is being used as an animal shelter. Below is a map of evacuation zones with latest information provided by Cal Fire. The National Weather Service issued a High Wind Warning for the area from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday. They forecasted winds as strong as 35 miles per hour in the area, with strongest gusts possibly reaching 65 miles per hour. Firefighters from Cal Fire's San Bernardino Unit were assisting the City of Bishop Fire Department and Inyo County Sheriff's Office with the incident.
