Police seek witnesses after fatal hit and run near Armstrong, B.C.
Police are seeking witnesses and dashcam footage after a head-on collision on Highway 97A near Armstrong, B.C., killed two people on Saturday. The crash between a black GMC Sierra and a tan Chevrolet pickup truck occurred at 1:30 a.m. north of Kelowna in B.C.'s Okanagan, according to police. Police say the black GMC Sierra had two occupants, and the tan Chevrolet pickup was carrying four people. Two of the passengers in the tan Chevrolet did not survive the crash: a 19-year-old Vernon man and a 20-year-old Coldstream man. "Witnesses report the 2009 GMC Sierra with lifted suspension and a tidy tank, a type of liquid transfer tank, in the bed was driving the wrong way on the divided highway prior to the fatal collision," according to Cpl. Michael McLaughlin with B.C. Highway Patrol. "There may be people who had a near miss with the black GMC Sierra who have not yet spoken to police," he added. "We need to speak to those people, and dash-camera video would be very useful." The driver and passenger in the black GMC Sierra fled the scene on foot after the crash, without identifying themselves to authorities or witnesses, according to police. The suspected driver of the black GMC Sierra, a 30-year-old man, was arrested later that same day. The B.C. Highway Patrol is asking anyone who witnessed the minutes leading up to the crash, or anyone with dash-camera video, to contact them at 250-828-3184 and quote file 2025-2243.

B.C. RCMP vehicles are seen stopped beside Highway 97A in a handout image. Authorities are asking witnesses to come forward following a hit-and-run in B.C.'s North Okanagan that left two men dead over the weekend. The head-on collision happened around 1:30 a.m. Saturday on Highway 97A near Armstrong, and involved two pickup trucks – a black GMC Sierra and a tan Chevrolet. Two of the passengers in the Chevrolet, identified as a 19-year-old from Vernon and a 20-year-old from Coldstream, were killed. After the crash, the Sierra driver and a passenger 'left the scene on foot without identifying themselves to witnesses or police,' B.C. Highway Patrol said in a news release Monday. Officers arrested a suspect driver later that day. Authorities have already spoken with some witnesses, but are hoping to speak to more as they work to understand 'exactly how the tragedy unfolded,' BCHP said. 'Witness reports say that a 2009 GMC Sierra with lifted suspension and a tidy tank in the bed was driving the wrong way on the divided highway prior to the fatal collision,' said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin, in a statement. 'There may be people who had a near-miss with the black GMC Sierra who have not yet spoken to police. We need to speak to those people, and dash-camera video would be very useful.' Authorities have not released the suspect driver's name, but said he is a 30-year-old Armstrong resident.
