The beauty of Haikyuu!! through its opening theme songs
Image via Production I.G.
There are things we call love. Kindness, in the way we smile at strangers. Warmth, in the way we get giddy for someone else's happiness. A hand, held out for those in need. These are the ways we have been taught to love, the ways we know how to love.
'Kami-sama resides in every little thing,'
said Shinsuke Kita's grandmother. And that's why, we have been told to handle things, albeit lifeless, with care and compassion. With reverence.
Sometimes, though, it is not just things that become lifeless, no. Sometimes, it's us, through the trials and turmoils of life, every so often we lose touch with the part of us we like to call 'alive'. And when that happens, life becomes monotonous.
The greys and blacks become more prominent, light seems to disappear.
And when this happens, we remind ourselves
'Hikari Are.'
For some of us, the light comes in the form of watching the people we grew up with, grow up again. Fictional, yes, but friends? Forever. Haikyu!!, and while it may sound cliché to say, is not JUST an anime. No, Haikyu!! is a way of life. Ideologies, sculpted so well together, molded, bottled, and stored for you to pick and choose.

You will find answers in the episodes, lessons, that will stay with you forever. And it is not just through the panels, the characters, but the songs as well, that we get to live Haikyu!! to the fullest! And while these emotions should never be ranked, here are some of the Haikyu!! opening themes that have stayed with us, long after the final point.
Hikari Are
BURNOUT SYNDROMES - Let There be Light (光あれ/Hikari are) Moonlight ver. Lyric | Haikyuu!
Burnout Syndromes gifted us
'Hikari Are'
, the opening theme of Haikyuu!!'s riveting third season, setting a tone of resilience and sheer determination from the first note.
The visuals, poetic in their simplicity, begin with Karasuno scaling a mountain, symbolizing their uphill battle against Shiratorizawa. But as the mountain transforms into Wakatoshi Ushijima, we realize the climb isn't against rocks or heights, but against giants, internal and external.
It's the rhythmic chant urging flightless crows to defy gravity, proving they, too, can corner an eagle. With powerful chords and lyrics that demand bravery,
'Hikari Are'
feels less like a theme and more like a battle cry: Let there be light, let there be hope, let there be victory.
FLY HIGH!!
BURNOUT SYNDROMES - FLY HIGH!! | Haikyu!! S2 OP (KAN/ROM/ENG Trans) Lyrics
If
Haikyuu!!
has an anthem, a melody that defines its essence, it's undoubtedly
'FLY HIGH!!'
by Burnout Syndromes. This energetic theme introduces the second half of Season 2 with a heartbeat rhythm, echoing Karasuno's resurgence. The visuals capture immediate intensity, a quick-paced rally, Karasuno no Juu ban, Hinata's eyes blazing with anticipation, ready to soar.
This song is Hinata Shoyo's manifesto. It sings directly to anyone who's ever felt small, telling them height matters little when you are born to fly.
It's Hinata's promise, whispered through catchy lyrics and soaring vocals, that he will fly, higher than anyone expects, including himself.
And us? We're reminded we can fly too.
PHOENIX
Haikyuu!! To the Top「Phoenix」 [Kan|Rom|Eng Lyrics]
Then there is
'PHOENIX'
, another gem from Burnout Syndromes, marking the beginning of the fourth season with profound imagery. We first see Hinata Shoyo alone, surrounded by darkness on a silent court. As he rises, the stadium lights flood the arena, symbolizing rebirth, revival, and the courage to start anew, even after countless failures.
'PHOENIX'
speaks to everyone who's ever tasted defeat and chosen to rise again. The visuals switch between Hinata's arduous training, mountainsides cold, breaths visible in freezing air, and his exhilarating return to center stage at Nationals. This isn't merely a sports anime theme; it's an emotional revelation, echoing the universal truth that falling down is human, but getting up, that's divine.
Hinata runs, leaps, and in that leap, we see our own struggles reflected, our own dreams rekindled.
The team gathers, throws their jerseys skyward, declaring silently that no fire can extinguish their spirit.
Every opening in
Haikyuu!!
tells you the same thing in a hundred different ways:
You can be more. Even when you're tired. Even when you're doubted. Even when you've fallen five times already. All it takes is one moment of courage. One play. One step. So let there be light. Let there be flight. Let there be fire.
And if you ever forget how, you know where to find them. Waiting. Always. Opening theme songs. Your soundtrack. Your team. Your reminder.
Karasuno fight! Mō Ippon… Mo ikai… But fly
