Omani medical team performs country's first heart transplant

Muscat:The Sultanate of Oman marked a medical milestone by successfully performing its first-ever heart transplant. The operation was carried out by an all-Omani medical team at the National Heart Centre in the Royal Hospital. The Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday that the surgery was performed on an Omani patient suffering from chronic heart failure. The five-hour procedure was led and supervised by Dr. Hilal bin Ali al Sabti, Minister of Health, who also took part in the surgery due to his expertise in heart operations. Dr Hilal al Sabti said the achievement marks a major step forward for Oman's healthcare system. 'This heart transplant was performed according to the highest medical and ethical standards and follows both national laws and international guidelines,' he said. He added that the success reflects the strength of Oman's healthcare vision and the skills of its medical professionals. 'It is a sign of how far we've come as a country and the importance of continuing to invest in our people.' Dr Qassim bin Saleh al Abri, Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at the Royal Hospital, said this is the first heart transplant done entirely by Omani hands and it's the result of years of training and preparation. Dr Alaa bin Hassan al Lawati also praised the teamwork behind the surgery. 'Such a complex operation needs cooperation from many medical specialists. Everyone involved showed great skill and dedication.' The Ministry of Health said this achievement is part of ongoing efforts to improve organ transplant services.

Laws issued to boost Oman's health sector

Muscat – His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik has issued two Royal Decrees, one promulgating the Public Health Law and the other regulating transplantation of human organs and tissues. Royal Decree No 43/2025 promulgates the Public Health Law following presentation to the Council of Oman, while Royal Decree No 44/2025 promulgates the Law Regulating Transfer and Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues, also presented before the Council of Oman. Article 2 of the latter authorises the Minister of Health to issue the executive regulation and any other necessary regulations within one year of enforcement of the organ transplant law. Existing regulations will continue to apply until then, as long as these do not conflict with the new provisions. Dr Hilal al Sabti, Minister of Health Ministry of Health described the new organ transplant law as a key addition to the legislative framework supporting the sultanate's health system. It aims to address the rising demand for organ transplants as a treatment method for patients suffering from terminal organ failure. Dr Hilal al Sabti, Minister of Health, said, 'The law supports the work of the National Organ Transplant Programme, guarantees the rights and safety of organ donors and transplant patients, precisely regulates the conditions and procedures for organ donation during life or after death, and defines the legal responsibilities and duties of medical institutions.' On the Public Health Law, he said it was essential to regulate all aspects related to public health and provide a comprehensive framework of scientific and practical rules. The law would serve as a reference for the health system's interaction with various sectors in alignment with the goals of Oman Vision 2040 to deliver more inclusive health services. Dr Sabti appreciated His Majesty the Sultan's continued support for the health sector, describing it as a major factor in driving efforts to achieve comprehensive and integrated healthcare in Oman.

National Rehabilitation Centre to be built in South Batinah

Muscat – Ministry of Health (MoH) has signed an agreement to establish the National Rehabilitation Centre funded by Sheikh Mohammed bin Saud Bahwan. To be built in South Batinah, the facility will provide specialised rehabilitation and healthcare services for adults and children alike. The agreement was signed by H E Dr Hilal al Sabti, Minister of Health, and Sheikh Bahwan. Dr Abdullah bin Hamoud al Harthi, International Relations Advisor at Minister of Health's Office, said the centre will be the first of its kind in Oman, linking healthcare and community institutions to rehabilitate individuals recovering from accidents, sports injuries and other conditions. 'The centre will also connect with major healthcare institutions, including Medical City Hospital for Military and Medical Services and University Medical City. It is expected to offer advanced rehabilitation services using the latest technologies and practices, improving quality of life and supporting patients' reintegration into society.' The centre will provide specialised services, including neurological rehabilitation, burn and muscle recovery, and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, along with other comprehensive treatments. Dr Ali bin Abdulhussain al Lawati, Advisor for Engineering Affairs at Minister of Health's Office, said the project is part of a healthcare complex in South Batinah. 'Health projects in this complex cover 700,000sqm, with the rehabilitation centre forming a key part. The facility will house specialised departments for physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, and prosthetics, in addition to administrative divisions, a training and research centre, workshops and storage facilities.' Ahmed bin Muslim al Rawas, Assistant President for Administrative Affairs and Human Resources at Medical City Hospital for Military and Medical Services, said the centre reflects Oman's commitment to strengthening partnership among healthcare institutions. 'This integration will improve service quality, ensuring patients receive timely and effective rehabilitation, while also minimising service gaps.' Thakiya bint Said al Noobi, Senior Specialist in Prosthetics and Orthopaedics at Al Khoula Hospital, stated that the centre will operate under unified frameworks, policies and evidence-based protocols for diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. 'It will also serve as a research and academic hub to enhance human resource development in rehabilitation services.' She added that specialised teams, including rehabilitation doctors, neurologists, neurosurgeons, general practitioners, therapists, nursing professionals, and prosthetics and orthotics experts, will work together to support patients' reintegration into society.
