Heraklion, on the island of Crete, is currently preparing for a new airport in Kastelli which is scheduled to open in February 2027. This number will then rise to 18million after some time. There will be 19 boarding gates, eight of which will be of combined use for Schengen and Non-Schengen flights. There will be space for 27 aircraft and also a terminal building with five levels of retail space and permanent exhibition areas. A masterplan map also shows an area shaded in purple that suggest future retail space. In addition, the airport is due to be one of the biggest in the country and when it opens it will replace the existing Nikos Kazantzakis International Airport in Heraklion. Nikos Kazantzakis International Airport opened back in 1937, however, it can only accommodate eight million passengers a year. Kastelli International Airport is being built to handle the growing number of tourists heading to Greece each year. The airport will be located a 25-minute drive away from Heraklion, which is the largest city on the island. In total, the airport is expected to cost €500million (£422million) to build and generate a total of 7,500 jobs in the area as well as a further 37,000 indirect jobs. Hill consortium lands Algeria metro line extension contract
US-headquartered engineering consultancy Hill International announced that its consortium has secured a major contract for the extension of the Aïn Naâdja – Baraki metro line in the Algerian capital Algiers in collaboration with Entreprise Métro d' Alger. The scope of work includes provision of design reviews, project management, construction as well as site supervision for the project. Additionally, it will also oversee the supply, installation and commissioning of integrated systems, tracks, station finishing and synchronisation with existing metro lines, said Hill International in its LinkedIn account. Early this month, Minister of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure Lakhdar Rekhroukh revealed that two Algiers metro extension projects will be completed in the second half of 2026. These are the Aïn Naâdja-Baraki line and the El-Harrach-USTHB line. The current length of the Algiers metro in service is 19 km, linking Martyrs' Square to Bachdjarah, then extending to El Harrach or Aïn Naâdja. After the commissioning of the extension to the airport and to Baraki, its total length will reach 33 km. According to Hill International, this new contract reflects its commitment to Algeria and the evolution of the Algerian market for rail and guided transport, including metro and high-speed trains. This new contract demonstrates Hill's performance in Algeria and its commitment to the country, while reflecting the development of the Algerian market for rail and guided transport, particularly in the field of metro and high-speed trains, it added. Giving a project update, Rekhroukh said the civil engineering works on the two lines have been completed, while the work is under way on the remaining stages, including equipment and systems. The El-Harrach-USTHB line is the first part of the metro extension project to Algiers International Airport.

Hill International wins Ain Naadja-Baraki metro extension deal in Algeria
US-headquartered engineering consultancy Hill International announced that it has been awarded a contract to lead a joint venture supporting Enterprise Metro d'Alger in the extension of the Ain Naadja-Baraki Metro Line in Algeria's capital Algiers. In a LinkedIn post this week, the company said it will provide design reviews, project and construction management, and site supervision for the project. Additionally, it will also oversee the supply, installation, and commissioning of integrated systems, tracks, station finishing, and synchronisation with existing metro lines.
