Victim of deadly Deering fire identified
Jan. 28—Richard Berger, 72, died Saturday evening in a house fire in Deering, the state's chief medical examiner said Tuesday. Berger's cause of death has not been released and the state fire marshal is still investigating how the deadly fire started. Firefighters responded to a report of multiple people trapped inside a single-family home that was ablaze on Hart Farm Road at 9:19 p.m. Saturday. Officers from the Hillsboro Police Department were on the scene first and reported heavy fire coming from the house. Berger was found dead inside the home by a State Police human remains detection dog. Another man, who was initially trapped on the second floor of the home, was helped out by a neighbor and taken to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. That man, whose name was not released, was later transferred to a Boston-area hospital.
