Kelantan to strengthen strategic cooperation with Media Prima

KOTA BARU: The Kelantan state government will continue its strategic partnership with Media Prima Bhd (MPB) to organise a variety of programmes across the state, including both academic and entertainment-based initiatives. State Local Government, Housing, Health and Environment Committee chairman Hilmi Abdullah said the government welcomes all forms of programmes, provided they comply with guidelines aligned with the state's policies. "Entertainment programmes are a necessity, but we have set specific conditions that all organisers must adhere to. "Kelantan is a state with its own uniqueness. For the past 35 years, we have upheld the 'Developing with Islam' policy, and we continue to maintain that approach to this day." Hilmi made the remarks following a courtesy visit by Media Prima Television Network News and Current Affairs group editor Azhari Muhidin and MPB deputy group managing editor and New Straits Times group editor Farrah Naz Abd Karim, at his office in the Kota Darulnaim Complex yesterday. He expressed appreciation to MPB for the visit, noting that it contributes to fostering positive relations and mutual understanding in efforts to deliver accurate and timely information to the public. "We need the support of media partners to disseminate truthful information about Kelantan's development. "God willing, we will see major progress once key infrastructure projects are completed," he said, referring to the Sultan Ismail Petra Airport upgrade in Pengkalan Chepa, the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), the Central Spine Road (CSR), and the Kuala Krai–Gua Musang Highway. Meanwhile, Azhari said the visit reaffirmed the long-standing collaboration between MPB and the state government, citing successful programmes such as Jom Heboh.

Kelantan to adopt Act 672, seeks control over waste management contractors

KOTA BHARU: Kelantan is set to adopt the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act 2007 (Act 672) in response to rising waste management costs, following a briefing with the National Solid Waste Management Department. State Local Government, Housing, Health and Environment Committee chairman Hilmi Abdullah said, nevertheless, Kelantan aims to include a provision that would allow the state to appoint its own waste management contractors, following a model already implemented in Selangor and Penang. "Several states, including Selangor, Terengganu, Perak and Penang, are also in talks to adopt this act. We don't want Kelantan to fall behind," he told Bernama at the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration and the launch of Semar Emas Enterprise's new compactor lorry here on Monday (April 28). Kelantan had previously rejected the act due to conditions that required the transfer of state authority over waste management to the federal government, but is now seeking a renegotiation of terms over the sector's growing financial pressures. Hilmi said a special briefing will be held in Putrajaya for district council presidents and the State Economic Planning Unit to discuss the matter further. In another development, he reported that the state's RM2,000 fine for improper waste disposal is showing positive results. Local councils, supported by closed-circuit television (CCTV) monitoring, have successfully reduced violations, with no new fines issued recently, said Hilmi. "This approach is working and it's helping keep the state clean,' he added. - Bernama

Kelantan to produce biogas from waste, cut landfill use with new recovery and energy tech

KOTA BARU, April 24 — The Kelantan government will use innovative technology to implement a biogas project to dispose of solid waste in a more efficient and environmentally-friendly way. State Local Government, Housing, Health, and Environment Committee chairman, Hilmi Abdullah, explained that the project will use a high-tech Material Recovery Facility (MRF) to separate organic and non-organic waste while organic waste is processed to produce biogas to power turbines for electricity generation. He was answering a question from Datuk Shaari Mat Hussain (Bersatu–Paloh) regarding the state's move to manage solid waste at the First Sitting of the Third Term of the 15th Kelantan State Legislative Assembly (DUN) at the Kota Darulnaim Complex here today. He added that waste management company, Mubaarakan Sdn Bhd (PSPM) has been running a Black Soldier Fly (BSF) farming project for three years, using fly larvae as an alternative livestock feed Furthermore, the state government has introduced landfill recovery technology, to excavate and process old waste to extend the lifespan of current landfill sites, eliminating the need to seek new landfill locations for long-term waste disposal. The Kelantan government is committed to assisting the agricultural industry in accessing international markets through collaborations with government departments, government-linked companies, and federal agencies like Mardi (Malaysian Agricultural Research and Devt Institute) and Fama. State Agriculture, Agro-Food Industry, and Commodities exco, Datuk Tuan Mohd Saripudin Tuan Ismail, highlighted efforts such as promoting Kelantanese agro-food industry products at expos and exhibitions, including the Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture, and Agrotourism Exhibition (MAHA), the Asean Halal Expo (AHEX) in Thailand, and Malaysia Fest in Singapore. He was replying to a question by Mohd Fauzi Abdullah (PAS-Manek Urai) on government initiatives to help farmers, breeders and agro entrepreneurs. The Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) played a key role in supporting farmers by distributing 170 metric tons of melons from Kampung Banggol to the Klang Valley, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, and Pahang. Besides, government agencies also provide support including grants and infrastructure through the Young Agropreneur Grant, partnerships with Petronas Dagangan to expand product marketing in selected Petronas Kedai Mesra outlets as well as with TikTok Shop in 2024 to enhance digital literacy and marketing skills among local entrepreneurs, involving 80 Fama-registered companies, including three from Kelantan. Kelantan is also intensifying efforts to generate state revenue through additional initiatives, including utilising non-radioactive rare earth elements (NR-REE) to ensure sustainable economic growth. Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Mohamed Fadzli Hassan stated that the current focus includes developing green hydrogen energy. Studies are underway, and several investors have expressed interest in green hydrogen projects in Kelantan, aligning with the national aspiration to achieve net-zero carbon emissions. In reply to a supplementary question from Mohd Saizol Ismail (PAS–Salor) today, he also mentioned that the Kelantan Land and Mines Office has received mineral tenure applications from the Kelantan Menteri Besar Corporation (PMBK) for land owned by the agency itself. The applications have been approved by the state authority for NR-REE mining proposals and studies are being conducted to establish an NR-REE processing plant in the state. Additionally, the solar energy industry is a key focus due to high investor interest. The state is identifying collaborations with local and international investors to expand the solar energy sector and to develop the carbon credit industry by seeking capable investors to implement it. — Bernama

Kelantan govt plans to ease traffic congestion around Pasar Siti Khadijah

KOTA BARU: The Kelantan government is planning to ease traffic congestion around Pasar Siti Khadijah by providing additional parking at a nearby shopping centre, said state executive councillor for Local Government, Housing, Health and Environment Hilmi Abdullah. "The Kota Baru Municipal Council Islamic City has initiated talks with Parkson to take over its basement parking," he said during the legislative assembly sitting at Kompleks Kota Darulnaim today in reply to a question from Dr Hafidzah Mustakim (PH–Kota Lama). "As a short-term measure, we encourage carpooling during peak hours to help ease congestion in the area. One of the contributing factors to the problem is motorists who stop and wait while making purchases," said Hilmi. In October 2024, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced an additional RM5.5 million allocation to upgrade the infrastructure at Pasar Siti Khadijah, such as sanitation, toilets, roofing and electrical wiring, bringing the total federal funding approved since last year to RM7 million. – Bernama
