Hōkūleʻa's trans-Pacific voyage delayed

HILO, Hawaii (KHON2) — Voyaging canoes Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia have delayed their departure from Hilo due to weather conditions. The pair of boats were scheduled to sail out of Hilo on June 2, but they are now scheduled to depart on the morning of June 3 to continue their Moananuiākea Voyage across the ocean. Big Island police investigating overnight shooting The decision to delay the voyage was made by the Polynesian Voyaging Society after they found that the weather on June 3 would be more favorable weather conditions for sailing. Once departed, the boats will visit hundreds of ports and be away from Hawaiʻi for approximately three years. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Ex-UFC star BJ Penn was arrested over shocking clash with elderly woman he claims is his 'fake mom'

MMA icon BJ Penn was arrested on two separate occasions over the weekend amid his bizarre feud with an elderly woman he claims is impersonating his mother, it has been revealed. Earlier this week Penn, 46, shared footage on Instagram of police arresting him at his home in Hawaii Sunday night, with the video showing cops dragging him out of his bed before leading him away in handcuffs. It was later revealed that the former two-weight UFC champion was booked into jail in Hilo at around 9:40pm that evening on a charge of 'abuse family or household member: offensive physical contact.' He was eventually released on $2,000 bail at 1:48am Monday. According to TMZ Sports, Penn was arrested over multiple run-ins he had with a 79-year-old woman, with the first taking place at around 8:45pm on Sunday in Hilo. Police claim the woman told them that he 'took her mail and then shined a bright flashlight in her eyes when asked for the mail to be returned.' She then alleges that she was shoved against a car by Penn when she tried to move the light away from her eyes. The fighter was arrested over the allegations and booked into jail, before being released with a warning citation after posting bond. That citation ordered him to stay away from the alleged victim. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jay Penn (@bjpenn) However, cops say he violated it just hours later when he showed up to her house early Monday morning. Penn was therefore arrested for a second time on another charge of abuse of family or household moment, with jail records indicating that he remained behind bars until Monday afternoon. After leaving custody, the Hawaii-born American initially posted a clip of officers confronting him in his bedroom, before he shared more footage of the alleged bust-up with an elderly woman which led to his first arrest. Penn claims in the caption that the woman is a 'fake Lorraine Shin' - which is his mother's name. Lorraine also appears to be 79 years old, according to public records. The video in question seemingly captures someone waving a light, while a woman can be heard repeatedly screaming: 'Hit me!' Penn added in the caption: '[She] has tried to get me to assault her and she has already walked around my house with a gun when I asked her about my finances and my families finances. This lady knows nothing about business and is a murdering theif [sic]. The REAL LORRAINE SHIN MAKES THIS MORON LOOK PARKED'. According to MMA Fighting, Penn's mother has since filed for a restraining order against her son after telling a court that she is convinced her son suffers from a rare psychological disorder known as Capgras syndrome - a delusional misidentification syndrome where a person falsely believes a person close to them has been replaced by an identical impostor. Shin alleges that she has endured 'extreme psychological abuse' at the hands of the ex-UFC star after being accused of being an imposter who 'killed his family' and took on his mother's identity. 'I believe my son is suffering from Capgras delusional syndrome,' she is quoted as saying. 'He believes I'm an imposter who has killed his family to gain control of the family assets. 'In the best interest for my safety, I ask the court for a six month [temporary restraining order] and have my son ordered to get medical treatment or other source of therapy.' has reached out to BJ Penn for comment. Penn has previously posted a series of disturbing social media posts about his mother Lorraine and brothers Jay Dee, Reagan, and Kalani Mamazuka. 'Hilo Police Department I need your help. My mother… my brothers… we're (sic) all murdered and I need you to investigate,' he recently wrote on Instagram. 'I need you to investigate these guys get these people out of my house and my off my properties.' He claimed they had been replaced by imposters who are now trying to 'steal everything from his family'. Penn competed in the UFC between 2001 and 2019 and won world titles in two divisions before being inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Ex-UFC champion BJ Penn shares video of bizarre arrest in Hawaii as police drag him out of his bed

Former UFC champion BJ Penn has shared footage of his bizarre run-in with police in Hawaii after being dragged out of his bed and arrested over the weekend. According to TMZ Sports, Penn, who won titles in two weight classes with the MMA promotion, was booked into jail in Hilo at around 9:40pm on Sunday on a charge of 'abuse family or household member: offensive physical contact." Hawaii police records state that the 46-year-old was released on $2,000 bail at 1:48am Monday, though further details surrounding the arrest are not available as of yet. Just over 24 hours on from his arrest, Penn uploaded footage on his Instagram story which appears to show him being confronted by officers in his bed at his Hawaii property. A number of cops can be seen trying to drag the ex-lightweight and welterweight king out of his bed while telling him that he was being arrested for 'harassment'. Penn, who could be heard asking to call 'an officer that I know' to deescalate the situation, was reluctant to go with the officers and repeatedly expressed confusion at what was playing out. An Irish woman in Peru: ‘I found it easy setting up a business here'

Along the narrow, cobbled streets of San Blas, the artisanal quarter of Cusco, Peru , is an atelier called Hilo, home to a slow fashion brand founded by Irishwoman Eibhlin Cassidy in 2003 in the historical centre of this ancient Inca capital high up in the Andes. Cassidy, who is from Fermanagh, studied ceramics in the National College of Art and Design and, after her BA in fine craft design, lived in Madrid for more than two years before completing a postgrad ceramics degree in Edinburgh College of Art in 2001. 'It was while I was living there that I had a yearning to travel to Mexico and Peru, and within a month of finishing my degree I was on a flight to Mexico and working in the studio of Gustavo Perez (the celebrated Mexican ceramic artist),' she says. On holiday in Chiapas in the southernmost state of Mexico on Christmas Day 2002, she slipped on stairs in a hostel while carrying a heavy backpack. The accident left her with broken bones in her hand and ultimately ended her ceramics career. READ MORE 'The local hospital put on a cast, but a month later in Costa Rica, where I went to have the cast removed, the bones hadn't healed at all and the doctors said I needed to return home for surgery and get pins inserted.' Defying that advice, she made her way down to Peru by bus and boat, arriving in Cusco in February 2003, and was immediately captivated by the city and its bohemian spirit. 'I was really inspired by the culture, the life that was so vibrant and colourful, the festivals and costumes, and so I started experimenting with second-hand clothes, cutting them up and remaking them in a new way,' she says. It also marked a turning point in that she didn't return home for three years, eventually going back only for her sister's wedding. Within a few months of arriving in Cusco, she had opened a small store selling one-off pieces of clothing – colourful, playful and original – that became an instant success with both locals and tourists. Being part of a supportive community has helped me build a local client base, which adds to the many international clients who visit the store Hilo is now an established business known for what she calls 'elevated everyday wear with a twist'. Her collections for both men and women work exclusively with Peruvian-sourced fabrics – vibrant jumpsuits, skirts, trousers, dresses and shirts are patched, overdyed, pleated, embroidered and hand stitched. In recent years she has been using natural dyes with plants from the Sacred Valley of the Incas in the highlands, in an ongoing project with women from the Pumaqwasin co-operative community in Chinchero. 'I found it easy setting up a business, and what started out as playing with cloth developed quite naturally – my store was the only creative business on the street and it's now where Cusco and international creatives open up shop. It is full of little cafes and artisan boutiques,' Cassidy says. Her success also led to her designing costumes for blockbuster films including Transformers and Paddington. Cusco has a vibrant social life, she says. 'It's easy to meet people from all over the world and make friends. And locals are so open and friendly. Being part of a supportive community has helped me build a local client base, which adds to the many international clients who visit the store.' She lives around the corner from her shop in a four-bedroom house 'filled with wood and glass' that has a small garden. [ An Irishwoman in Portugal: 'Blue skies, bilingual children and a flight home in three hours' Opens in new window ] Rents in the area can range from US$300-1,000 a month, while a two-course meal in a local market costs about €2.50. Eating out in a restaurant ranges from €8-€28, while the local market is full of fresh local produce, and tropical fruit juices can be bought for around €1.20. 'A fun fact is that Peru is the birthplace of the potato, with over 4,000 varieties,' Cassidy says. The downside to living in Cusco? 'Bureaucracy can be tricky and dealing with paperwork and legal stuff can be super frustrating. It can be chaotic, but that's part of the appeal as well. 'Stomach issues are common, mostly due to local bacteria, so you must be a bit careful.' She explains that the city relies heavily on tourism, mostly from the US. 'We do get some Irish visitors, though not too many – it is still a bit off the beaten track.' She travels back to Ireland once or twice a year with her 10-year-old son, spending a month in the countryside and with family. 'Arriving back, the altitude (Cusco is at nearly 4000m) hits hard for the first day or two. Climbing the endless steps here can make you breathless, but I love and appreciate my life here.'
