Tripura minister says trade with Bangladesh normal

The fall of the Sheikh Hasina government and subsequent unrest in Bangladesh did not have repercussions on the export and import trade with Bangladesh through check posts in northeast India. Fish is one major item that is imported to Tripura and neighbouring states. Tripura's fisheries minister, Sudhanshu Das, informed that fish consignments are regularly coming through different Integrated Check Posts (ICPs). 'Import and export are still ongoing, and fish is an important component in the bilateral trade,' he told reporters after attending a meeting with officials from his department on Thursday. The Minister also stated that there is a shortage of about 30 to 31 tons of fish in the state, according to estimates from his department. To meet this shortage, the merchants are buying fish from West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, and Bangladesh. The State government's goal is to farm 30 to 31 tonnes of fish in Tripura to meet the shortage, the minister added. Mr. Das directed fisheries officials to increase fish production through proper planning and measures to meet the demands of the state. Minister held the meeting with officials from all levels of the fisheries department. An official mentioned that different types of fish are being imported into India from Bangladesh with Hilsa being considered the most delicious but expensive fish.
