Tripura minister says trade with Bangladesh normal
The fall of the Sheikh Hasina government and subsequent unrest in Bangladesh did not have repercussions on the export and import trade with Bangladesh through check posts in northeast India. Fish is one major item that is imported to Tripura and neighbouring states.
Tripura's fisheries minister, Sudhanshu Das, informed that fish consignments are regularly coming through different Integrated Check Posts (ICPs). 'Import and export are still ongoing, and fish is an important component in the bilateral trade,' he told reporters after attending a meeting with officials from his department on Thursday.
The Minister also stated that there is a shortage of about 30 to 31 tons of fish in the state, according to estimates from his department. To meet this shortage, the merchants are buying fish from West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, and Bangladesh.
The State government's goal is to farm 30 to 31 tonnes of fish in Tripura to meet the shortage, the minister added. Mr. Das directed fisheries officials to increase fish production through proper planning and measures to meet the demands of the state.
Minister held the meeting with officials from all levels of the fisheries department.
An official mentioned that different types of fish are being imported into India from Bangladesh with Hilsa being considered the most delicious but expensive fish.

Bangladesh will hold its next general election in the first half of April 2026, announced Muhammad Yunus, the head of the country's interim government, on Friday, according to The Daily Star. During a televised address on the eve of Bakri Eid, Yunus said that the Election Commission would announce the roadmaps to the polls 'at an appropriate time', reported Prothom Alo. 'The government has held discussions with all parties to organise the most free, fair, competitive and acceptable elections in history,' he was quoted as saying by The Daily Star. Following the announcement, the National Citizen Party, Bangladesh's first student-led political party established in February, said it would not object to holding the national election 'if reforms and justice are made visible to ensure a level playing field and neutrality of the administration'. 'But the reforms must be visible before the election is organised, and in line with national expectations, a Constituent Assembly election must be arranged to implement a new Constitution,' Akhter Hossen, the member secretary of the party, was quoted as saying by The Daily Star. Yunus, a Nobel laureate economist, took over as chief adviser of Bangladesh's interim government three days after Sheikh Hasina resigned as the prime minister and fled to India on August 5. Hasina fled after several weeks of widespread student-led protests against her Awami League government. She was ousted from power after being the prime minister of Bangladesh for 16 years. On Friday, Yunus said that by the time elections are held, Bangladesh will see progress in the trial against Hasina on charges of crimes against humanity. 'We want elections that will satisfy the souls of the martyrs of the uprising and bring peace to their souls,' he said. 'We want the largest number of voters, candidates and parties to participate in the next elections.' On June 1, Hasina was charged in the country's International Crimes Tribunal with crimes against humanity allegedly committed during the protests against her government in July and August. Hasina has been charged with having instigated mass killings during protests against her Awami League government.

It accused the interim government of rampant corruption and tax favouritism, including a tax waiver of Tk 666 crore for Yunus himself and tax exemption for Grameen Bank. 'In the name of development, they will hand over important national assets and infrastructure to serve foreign interests," it said. Furthermore, the Awami League claimed Yunus' government lacked democratic legitimacy and served foreign interests rather than those of the people of Bangladesh. It warned that several interim government members had foreign passports and would leave the country after causing irreversible damage. 'To protect our future, we must act now. There is no alternative to a united struggle by all patriots to save our country from the clutches of these vultures. 'Ask them to lead with honesty and transparency, and to reject all forms of corruption, favoritism, extortion, syndicates, and violence," he added, promising to build a 'New Bangladesh'.
