Goodbye hand cramps: Many AP exams go digital this month

HILTON, N.Y. (WROC) — This month, for the first time, many students taking classes through the Advanced Placement Program are taking their exam on a computer instead of on paper. The AP Program, which is run through the College Board, announced starting in May, standard paper testing will be discontinued for 28 AP exams. Students in those classes are now taking their exams through the Bluebook digital testing application. AP classes provide college-level course work and often provide college credits for high school students. Some of the courses going fully digital for exams include AP English Literature, AP European History and AP Psychology. There are also a number of courses that will deliver the exam in hybrid fashion. Local school districts are administering many of those tests now. Emilia Bovenzi, testing coordinator at Hilton High School, says two weeks into the transition it appears to be a success with many students saying they were able to finish the exam faster. 'We haven't had any tech issues, but we have tech ready to go if we need it and it makes it a lot less work for the proctors as well, we don't have to collect as many papers, we don't have to worry about kids writing in the answers in the wrong location,' Bovenzi said. 'The only thing is that kids get a little nervous because they're a timer in the corner of the screen that makes them a little anxious, but, overall, I think it's been smooth and easy and once you get in the process of doing them it makes life a lot easier.' The switch follows the SATs moving online and will likely precede the digital migration of other tests. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Stars of Tomorrow: A night of magic and community support

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — 2,400 Costume Clad students, their drama teachers, parents, friends, and other supporters brought the energy of a big time award show to the Rochester Broadway Theatre League Friday. Stars of Tomorrow is the biggest night for theatre kids in the Greater Rochester area. Students from 42 local schools performing selections from their high school musicals. The annual recognition ceremony begins with an opening performance and is always full of good energy, sincere support, and talented teens. News 8 spoke with two Hilton high school students who say they are thrilled that their school is participating for the first time this year. 'I'm so excited,' Hilton High School sophomore Lylah Mason said. 'I've already dreamed about this. It's like the Tonys just for teens.' 'It was just wonderful to see the community support and how everyone since they knew we were doing this, it was extra special to have the community support,' Hilton High School senior Grant Wood. 'Truly, it's just the sound of the cheering and the love that they have for each other and it fills me for the rest of the year,' RBTL Director of Education Holly Valentine said. Valentine called it a night full of magic, and News 8's Theresa Marsenburg agrees. For the past three years, Theresa has been honored to give the News 8 welcome, and instead of pumping up the kids. 'They fill me with such great energy,' Marsenburg said. And as a long time supporter, WROC will launch the 'Stars of Tomorrow' webpage on Monday morning. It will feature the student performers selected to return to RBTL later this month for round two of Stars of Tomorrow. Fans will be able to vote for their favorite performer. Congratulations to all of Friday's participants. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Golden Apple Award: Congratulations to Mrs. Best!

HILTON, NY (WROC) — Congratulations to Kristina Best, our latest Golden Apple Award winner! Mrs. Best is a band teacher at Hilton High School. She works with 9-12th-grade students, teaching everything from flutes to saxophones. Student Ava Inzinga says, 'She's the reason why I started band. I started band in 10th grade and she has helped teach me and make me feel like I'm not behind, even though I've been doing it for a lot less time.' Best was nominated for a Golden Apple Award by two of her students who say she goes the extra mile to help everyone. Neri says, 'when you're in band you're kind of just all close in general. It's just how it is. You all play together you all work together so she just really has done a really great job the last few months keeping us all together and making sure she checks in on all of us.' Principal Jeffrey Green says, 'It's a very unique teaching role because she works one on one with students a lot, but she also works with huge ensembles of 60-70 plus kids. There's lots of commitments after school as well. She does a lot.' Mrs. Best has been teaching music for 14 years. The last four in Hilton. She loves the sense of community that comes with teaching band. 'I love that band is very dependent on everyone as a whole. So, it is a real team effort, real community effort, you can't have a great ensemble without everyone doing their part and that is really important to me,' says Best. Her favorite part about teaching is the relationships she builds with students. 'I have the best kids in the world, that's easy. They are wonderful humans and they are so kind it makes it really easy to do things for them,' says Best. Although her students would say it is Mrs. Best who is the best.
