Kaouther Ben Hania's ‘The Voice of Hind Rajab' to premiere at Venice Film Festival
Ben Hania obtained the full 70-minute recording from the Red Crescent, spoke with Hind's mother and rescuers, and crafted a script centered on silence, fear, and the agonising wait for help, rather than visible violence. Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania's latest feature, The Voice of Hind Rajab, will premiere in the main Competition at the 2025 Venice Film Festival, which runs from August 27 to September 9. The announcement was made by festival director Alberto Barbera, who described the film as a profoundly moving work likely to leave a lasting impression on both audiences and critics. The Voice of Hind Rajab has been nominated for the Golden Lion, the festival's top prize. The film centres on the harrowing true story of six-year-old Palestinian girl Hind Rajab, who was killed along with six members of her family during an Israeli attack in Gaza in 2024. While fleeing Gaza City, their car was shelled, killing Hind's uncle, aunt and three cousins. Hind and another cousin initially survived and contacted the Palestine Red Crescent Society for help. Days later, their bodies were discovered along with the paramedics who had attempted a rescue. The tragedy drew global attention, with protests erupting around the world. At Columbia University, students renamed Hamilton Hall to 'Hind's Hall,' and American rapper Macklemore released a protest anthem bearing the same name. According to the official synopsis, the film begins on January 29, 2024, when Red Crescent volunteers receive a desperate emergency call. On the other end is a six-year-old girl trapped in a car, pleading for rescue as gunfire rages outside. The Red Crescent team does everything in their power to reach her in time. Her name is Hind Rajab. Ben Hania, best known for her acclaimed documentary Four Daughters, which premiered at Cannes in 2023 and earned an Oscar nomination, revealed that the decision to make The Voice of Hind Rajab was deeply personal and immediate. While traveling for Four Daughters' awards campaign, she came across an audio clip of Hind's final call for help. The impact, she said, was instant and transformative. 'I heard the sound of her voice, and I felt the ground shift beneath me,' Ben Hania recalled. 'In that moment, I knew I couldn't carry on with my original plans. I had to make this film.' She added: 'I contacted the Red Crescent and asked them to let me hear the full audio. It was about 70 minutes long, and harrowing. 'After listening to it, I knew, without a doubt, that I had to drop everything else. I had to make this film. I spoke at length with Hind's mother, with the real people who were on the other end of that call, those who tried to help her. I listened, I cried, I wrote. 'Then I wove a story around their testimonies, using the real audio recording of Hind's voice, and building a single-location film where the violence remains off-screen. That was a deliberate choice. Because violent images are everywhere on our screens, our timelines, our phones.' She concluded: 'What I wanted was to focus on the invisible: the waiting, the fear, the unbearable sound of silence when help doesn't come. Sometimes, what you don't see is more devastating than what you do. 'At the heart of this film is something very simple, and very hard to live with. I cannot accept a world where a child calls for help and no one comes. That pain, that failure, belongs to all of us. This story is not just about Gaza. It speaks to a universal grief. And I believe that fiction (especially when it draws from verified, painful, real events) is cinema's most powerful tool. More powerful than the noise of breaking news or the forgetfulness of scrolling. Cinema can preserve a memory. Cinema can resist amnesia. May Hind Rajab's voice be heard.'

A 35-year-old British woman, who has not been named, tragically died after being knocked down by a car while jogging with her husband in the town of Beaune, eastern France A British woman has been knocked down and killed abroad while out running with her husband. Police have taken the driver into custody. The unnamed 35-year-old was jogging in the town of Beaune in eastern France when the tragedy happened on Tuesday at around 8am. Emergency services rushed to the scene and paramedics, arriving 15 minutes later, found her in cardiac arrest. Sadly they were not able to resuscitate her and she died at the scene. A 45-year-old driver of the car is now being questioned by police having been taken into custody, reported local outlet Le Bien Public. The husband of the victim is understood to have been treated for shock but he was not injured. The Mirror has approached the Foreign Office for comment. Meanwhile, a British woman died following a powerful gas explosion at a bar in southern Spain, last month. The 56-year-old was one of two women killed after a gas canister exploded at the Casa Javi bar in San Pedro del Pinatar in Murcia on June 19. The unnamed Brit, who reportedly lived in the area, was going by the weekly market when she was struck by the blast. Their deaths were confirmed a week later by the local council in a post on X. The other fatal victim was the 38-year-old owner of the bar, a woman of Moroccan origin named Hind, who suffered severe burns. Both victims had been hospitalised following the incident which saw at least 15 other people injured. Local police, ambulances and firefighters rushed to the scene at around 12:23pm local time, following 25 calls from members of the public. And a tourist from the UK along with her friend have been killed by a charging elephant during a 'sunrise safari walk' in Zambia. At around 6am local time on Thursday, July 3, the victims, a 68-year-old and a 67-year-old, were attacked by a female elephant that was with a calf at South Luangwa National Park, Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba said. The two friends had been based at the Big Lagoon Bush Camp and had been enjoying an early morning walk to another part of the camp when the horror incident took place. Mr Mweemba said: "Two female tourists while taking a safari walk to a crossing point at Luangwa river spotted an elephant with a calf at a distance and diverted about 50m away, but within few minutes after diverting a tea bearer who is usually behind saw the elephant charging at them." The tea bearer reportedly shouted 'elephants' and as the two women turned around they saw it storming towards them at high speed. In a desperate bid to help the women, the safari guides who were with the group fired shots at the elephant. While the elephant was hit by the gunshots, the guides were unable to prevent the attack and both women died at the scene, police said. The pair "had spent four peaceful days immersed in nature's embrace. Their journey was meant to continue - but instead, we remember them for their courage, their curiosity, and their love for life's wild places", a local said. The bodies of the two women were taken to Mambwe District Hospital for mortuary services, awaiting further details. Their cause of death is yet to be formally confirmed.

Meaning of Maryam, the name of Sheikh Maktoum's newborn daughter
Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, has announced the birth of his niece, Maryam. "Congratulations," Sheikh Hamdan posted on his Instagram Stories on Monday evening, along with the newborn's name in both English and Arabic. Maryam is the daughter of Sheikh Hamdan's brother, Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance. She is named after her mother, Maryam. The royal news comes three months after Sheikh Hamdan announced the birth of his fourth child, a daughter named Hind. Meaning of Maryam The name Maryam, which was our Arabic word of the week in November last year, is one of the most popular names in the Arab world. A female name, it has Arabic, Aramaic and Hebrew roots and is one of the few names that is used widely across the three Abrahamic religions. Other variations of the name include Mariam, Mary, Mariana, Meryana, Maria, Marosh, Maroom, Maram and many more. While the origins of the name Maryam isn't clear, one theory is that the name has Egyptian origins, with some scholars suggesting it comes from the Egyptian root mr, which means love or beloved. There is also the possibility that it came from Aramaic, which uses the name in reference to Moses's sister. In Arabic, a theory exists that it is derived from the verb rama, which is made up of the Arabic letters rah, alif and meem. Rama means someone who has occupied a space. Another commonly accepted theory is that the name originates from Hebrew, derived from the name Miryam, which can mean rebellious. It can also refer to a lady, or a woman of high social rank, as well as a woman who worships, or a worshipper. One of the reasons for the popularity of the name is Mariam, known in the West and in Christianity as the Virgin Mary, the mother of the prophet Isa (Jesus). In the Quran, Mariam is depicted as a strong and dedicated servant of God who was chosen to bear Isa without any human intervention. It's a narrative that is also told in the Bible. Even if the origin of the word has been subjected to much scholarly debate, it remains a popular name with powerful spiritual significance associated with virtue, devotion and inner strength across religions and cultures.

Guru Dutt at 100: See how other filmmakers have paid tribute through the years
The days of black-and-white are long gone. The days of film on film are over. Why, then, are auteurs and actors still studying a man who died over 60 years ago? Guru Dutt's layered storytelling, use of light and shadow and the way he wielded the camera yield lessons for them still, they say. In Dutt's centenary year (he lived just 39 years, from 1925 to 1964), here's a look back at some of the tributes paid to the auteur in Hind cinema. * Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster; Tigmanshu Dhulia (2011) . This is a tribute to Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962), produced by and starring Guru Dutt. Dutt was no longer directing by this point, having given it up after the colossal failure of Kaagaz Ke Phool at the box office. Yet, even though Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam was directed by his long-time writer Abrar Alvi, it is generally considered the third in Dutt's great trilogy (following from Pyaasa and Kaagaz Ke Phool). The story traces the decline of a Bengali zamindari family and a neglected chhoti bahu (Meena Kumari, in a towering performance) who turns to alcohol in an attempt to win over her indifferent husband (Rehman). Dhulia's retelling, lauded by critics, also follows an adulterous saheb and his wife. It recasts the tale as one of love and betrayal, wielded as weapons. It is a tribute to an unforgettable work of art, Dhulia has said. * Gulaal; Anurag Kashyap (2009) . Arguably Guru Dutt's best-known film, Pyaasa (1957), follows a poet rejected at every turn, who eventually finds solace with a prostitute. Kashyap's Gulaal takes off from the Mohammed Rafi song that sums up that film: Yeh Duniya Agar Mil Bhi Jaye To. It explores the idea that success has no meaning in a world like ours. Set amid turbulent Rajasthan politics, it interrogates our quests for wealth and power, and the prices we are willing to pay for them. * Godmother; Vinay Shukla (1999) . Shabana Azmi stars in this film based on the true-life tale of Gujarati mafia leader-turned-politician Santokben Jadeja. The movie won six National Awards, and Shukla has frequently cited Dutt as his inspiration. Elements of this influence can be seen in his use of the camera, and of light and shadow, in the film. * Chup: Revenge of the Artist; R Balki (2022) . The inspiration here was Dutt's dark classic, Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959). The story of the decline of a successful film director bombed so badly at the box office that Dutt never directed another film again. In Chup, a crazed fan of Guru Dutt, a failed filmmaker (played by Dulquer Salmaan), has an unravelling of his own. When his debut work is panned by critics, he goes on a killing spree. Ironically, the film was itself panned by critics. * Rahenge Sadaa Gardish Mein Taare; Saif Hasan (2017) This teleplay pays tribute to 1950s Hindi cinema, but is based specifically on the lives of Guru Dutt and his wife, the singer Geeta Dutt (nee Roy). In the teleplay, Arif Zakaria plays a filmmaker named Dev Dutt; Sonali Kulkarni plays his wife, a singer named Bhavna Bose. It opens with the filmmaker's suicide and tells its tale in flashback, touching upon the rumours of a great love between Dutt and the actress Waheeda Rehman that are believed to have driven the husband and wife apart. * 35 mm; Chandan Roy Sanyal This short film co-produced by Vikrant Massey is reportedly inspired by Dutt's life. Neeraj Kabi plays a filmmaker who falls in love with an actress who is his muse. Though the trailer was released in 2015 and Massey has spoken at length about his debut production, 35 mm has no confirmed release date yet.

British woman killed in gas explosion at bar in Spanish holiday hotspot
A British woman has died in a gas explosion at a bar in southern Spain. The 56-year-old was one of two women killed when a butane canister ignited at the Casa Javi bar in San Pedro del Pinatar in Murcia last Thursday. She is believed to have been heading to the weekly market when she was caught in the blast. Another 17 people were injured. Her death was confirmed today in a social media post from the local council. The other victim was the bar owner, a Moroccan woman so far only named as Hind, who was said to have suffered severe burns, El Español reported. Police, ambulances and fire engines rushed to the bar shortly after midday on June 19 following the powerful explosion. Photos taken at the scene show what appears to have been a window which is blown out and debris strewn across the pavement outside. The owner of a shop nearby said: 'My entire business shook, the windows and everything.' No cause has yet been officially determined, but a Judicial Police inspection ruled the gas cylinder's seal had been 'sabotaged', according to reports.
