UAE Food Bank distributes 6.2 million meals during Ramadan

The UAE Food Bank has distributed about six million meals during Ramadan so far as part of the United in Giving campaign, which aims to dispatch seven million meals domestically and internationally throughout the holy month. The drive was launched earlier this month under the directive of Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum, wife of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai. The campaign will hit its target if a further 800,000 meals are distributed by the end of Ramadan. The final day of the holy month will be on either Saturday, March 29 or Sunday, March 30, depending on the relevant moon sightings. 'United in Giving reflects the UAE's deeply rooted values of generosity and compassion,' Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, vice chairman of the board of trustees of the UAE Food Bank, said earlier this month. 'It serves as a call to action for individuals, institutions and philanthropists to contribute to the welfare of millions.' The campaign is being split into three strands, with one section – Blessing Baskets – focusing on distributing more than 200,000 meals each day in the form of food donations, parcels and surplus meals. Zabeel Iftar is a project providing meals for more than 3,000 workers, while Surplus of Good, a collaboration between the food bank and Fatafeat TV, is a campaign to educate the community on the need to repurpose food sustainably. Surplus cooked and uncooked food from hotels, restaurants, corporate donors and households will also be distributed to beneficiaries, said Manal bin Yaroof, head of the executive team at the UAE Food Bank. This is being carried out in co-ordination with charitable organisations and public and private sector partners to ensure food reaches those most in need. 'The Surplus of Good initiative is designed to inspire individuals and communities to rethink food consumption and embrace sustainable practices,' said Ms bin Yaroof. 'As part of this programme, we are producing six episodes in five languages – Arabic, English, Amharic, Indonesian and Urdu – featuring innovative recipes that transform surplus food into nutritious meals. These episodes will be professionally produced, incorporating insights from chefs, volunteers and individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. By ensuring broad accessibility, we aim to maximise awareness and create a lasting impact in the global fight against food waste.'

Dubai launches housing plan for Emirati families

Dubai Municipality on Monday launched the Home First initiative to enhance housing facilities for Emirati families and cut bureaucracy on residential planning. It introduces a set of urban planning amendments designed to strengthen family stability, foster social cohesion and improve quality of life, state news agency Wam reported. It supports the Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum Family Programme, which was established by Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum, wife of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, in January. The initiative updates the Dubai Building Code, allowing for greater flexibility in residential planning and enabling Emiratis to more easily make amendments to their homes. The new regulations allow the construction of a side family annexe before the main villa, offering additional living spaces such as bedrooms, living rooms and kitchens. Emirati homeowners can build a separate villa for a son within the existing family property and the initiative also allows families to expand their villas with a full 100 per cent extension on the second floor. Setback regulations (the minimum distance which a building or other structure must be away from a street or road) have also been revised, reducing the minimum setback for villas to 1.5 metres and introducing an additional 1.5-metre setback for rooftop floors across all construction boundaries. Additionally, setbacks between service annexes and the main villa have been removed, with the updated regulations permitting service annexes to reach a height of up to eight metres across two floors. Townhouses can now be built adjacent to each other across two plots. 'The Home First initiative reinforces Dubai Municipality's commitment to a flexible and sustainable urban planning framework that supports family well-being and community stability,' said Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, acting director general of Dubai Municipality. 'These new allowances provide Emirati families with adaptable housing facilities that meet their evolving needs while upholding Dubai's high architectural standards.' In January, Sheikh Mohammed approved a housing project worth Dh5.4 billion ($1.47 billion) for young Emiratis planning to start families. The initiative includes the construction of more than 3,000 housing units in Dubai. Of these, 1,181 homes will be built in Latifa City for beneficiaries under the housing loan category. For beneficiaries in the housing grant category, 606 new homes will be created in Al Yalayis 5, a total of 432 in Wadi Al Amardi, 398 in Al Awir 1, another 200 in the Makan area of Hatta, 120 in Oud Al Muteena and 67 homes in the countryside and rural areas of Dubai.

International Charity Organisation supporting 60,000 orphans over Ramadan

The International Charity Organisation has launched a series of initiatives to support 60,000 orphans in the UAE and abroad during Ramadan. Key projects include distributing charity funds donated by the public, providing clothing for orphans and their mothers, offering food parcels, monthly financial aid, Eid gifts, and medical assistance, state news agency Wam reported. The initiatives reflect the organisation's commitment to supporting orphans and easing their financial burden, Dr Khaled Al-Khaja, secretary general of the ICO, said. He also emphasised that the efforts are made possible through strong collaboration with charitable institutions and donors. The organisation was established in Ajman in 1984, with branches around the world. Earlier this week it was announced that the ICO is distributing 7,500 iftar meals a day throughout the UAE during the holy month. The ICO initiatives follow a campaign launched by the UAE Food Bank that sets out to provide seven million meals to those in need during the holy month. The United in Giving initiative was launched under the directive of Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum, wife of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai. 'United in Giving reflects the UAE's deeply rooted values of generosity and compassion,' said Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, vice chairman of the board of trustees of the UAE Food Bank. 'It serves as a call to action for individuals, institutions and philanthropists to contribute to the welfare of millions.' The campaign aligned with the vision to position the UAE as a global leader in humanitarian and charitable work, while fostering a culture of giving and social responsibility, he added.
