Devotees participate in Sri Sankararameswarar temple car festival with great fervour in Thoothukudi
The annual Chithirai car festival of Sri Sankararameswarar temple in Thoothukudi held on Saturday with great fervor, drawing hundreds of devotees from various parts of Thoothukudi and neighboring Tirunelveli districts.
Popularly known as Sivan temple, located in the heart of Thoothukudi city, the festival began with flag-hoisting ceremony on May 1.
As part of the festival special pujas were conducted every morning and evening and the deities along with their consorts were taken on a procession through the four streets.
The highlight of the annual festival, the temple car procession attracted a large number of devotees who enthusiastically pulled the temple car using the vadams (ropes). The temple car was attractively decorated with cloth canopies featuring colorful motifs, floral arrangements and banana plantains.
Preceding the procession were vibrant traditional performances such as Mayilattam, Oyilattam, Karagattam, Rajamelam, Thappattam, and Kailayavathiyam. The festivities included women's Kolattam, singing of Thevaram hymns, recitation of vedas, and martial demonstrations by the school students.
Minister of Social Welfare and Women Empowerment P. Geetha Jeevan, Thoothukudi Mayor Jegan Periyasamy, and Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Trust department's Joint Commissioner Anbumani were present.
