Southern-Leaning American Bistro Cannonball Dives Into South Pasadena
One of northeast Los Angeles's most charming neighborhoods, South Pasadena, welcomed Cannonball on May 2, a new restaurant from Hippo chef Matt Molina and operating partner Joe Capella. The sprawling multi-floor space, previously occupied by Piccolo, has original brick walls, an extensive vintage wine list, cocktails, and farmers-market-derived seasonal produce. It's potentially the most exciting new restaurant to open in the area in a few years (its most recent was 2023's debut of Katsu Jin on Fair Oaks). With Molina and Capella steering the ship, South Pasadena has a grown-up restaurant for drinks and classic American dishes, coupled with reasonable prices. Molina, who won the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Pacific of 2012 for his work at Osteria Mozza, has had a strong run with Capella at Arts District's Everson Royce Bar (opened in 2015), which is also co-founded and co-owned by Randy Clement and April Langford (Good Neighbor Bar, Silver Lake Wine). The foursome opened Hippo in Highland Park and Triple Beam alongside Nancy Silverton in 2018, cementing their place in northeast LA's dining scene. Molina's relationships with farmers at the South Pasadena Farmers Market, a main source for Hippo's produce, led him and Capella to check out the former Piccolo. The former Venice-based Italian restaurant had expanded to Mission Street in 2022 but closed just a year later in spring 2023 (it still operates in Santa Monica). Cannonball is Capella and Molina's first collaboration, opened without involvement from Clement, Langford, and Silverton. 'Hippo was in a good spot and we wanted to do something in this neighborhood [South Pasadena,' says Molina. 'I grew up in SGV and first heard about it when our friend Steven Arroyo opened something here. He was always ahead of the game. It's so charming here, but a lot of people in Northeast LA don't know about it, or the farmers market.' After a career spent in Hollywood and Mid-City at Osteria Mozza and Campanile, Molina has become acclimated to this part of town. Molina sees a similarity to New York City restaurateurs [like Gabe Stulman], who open multiple concepts in a particular neighborhood to serve a similar audience. Like Everson Royce Bar, Molina anchors the menu with his signature flaky biscuits with honey butter and a single-patty burger made with ground chuck and Tillamook cheddar. Starters include shaved celery salad with medjool dates, roasted carrots with cumin vinaigrette, and fideos with clams, chorizo, and saffron. Most starters range $12 to $24, bucking the trend of inflationary prices that seem to affect most new LA restaurants. A short list of six mains includes the burger with fries for $23, and extends to barbecue pork loin with Anson Mills polenta, grilled prawns, or grilled New York steak with pommes aligot. An olive cake with a side of crème fraiche is the sole dessert. Molina says the menu will not feature pasta during its opening phase, but he might add some in the future. Beverages at Cannonball are another strong suit, with Joe Capella's extensive wine and spirits knowledge on full display. Capella priced the wines to drink now (he would like the entire inventory to turn over every six months), with glasses between $14 and $17, and a long bottle list with prices that are often lower than online retail. He was inspired by places he's visited in Stockholm and Japan that price wine and spirits at an accessible level and allow enthusiasts to actually 'taste the fruits' of often labor-intensive curation. 'We're not trying to profit disproportionately just because it's rare and in demand,' Capella told Eater over email. There are plenty of wines priced between the high-$30s and mid-$40s, alongside higher-end bottles for those looking to ball out. Cocktails come from a longtime relationship with Varnish co-founder Eric Alperin, who advised on the drinks and helped install lead bartender Wolfgang Alexander at Cannonball. Drinks reflect the Milk & Honey school of bartenders with playful takes on classics like the Raymond Hill (Manhattan) using bourbon, amaro lucano, Pedro Ximénez sherry, and mole. Fettle Design helped preserve the building's main interior, hoping to conjure a New York, East Coast, and London feel that stands in contrast to places like Hippo. Capella and Fettle saw the moody space working with a darker color palette; tasteful landscape art, vintage lighting, indoor plants, and pops of old-timey wallpaper complete the look. A more cheerful patio with French cafe-style chairs and greenery works well as an al fresco summer dinner. Eventually, service will expand daily to later hours and a daytime menu on weekends (no weekday lunch, though). With two industry veterans at the helm and a versatile, classic ambience — plus the very approachable food — Cannonball has brightened South Pasadena's dining scene in a big way. Before the Palme d'Or gets dished out and after power cuts took down the town's electricity for a day, Cannes was abuzz with the burning question: qui a gagné le Palm Dog? The answer came yesterday afternoon at a star-studded-collar event on the beach at The Members Club. In a woof-and-ready ceremony, jury member Peter Bradshaw noted that 25 films had come under consideration for this year's honors, pointing out that some were made by directors who hadn't even been born when the event first took place at the UK Pavilion back in 2000. • The top prize — The Palm Dog itself — went to sheepdog Panda, for her part in a film directed by her owner: The Love That Remains, Hlynur Pálmason's tragicomic, gentle family saga. Sad news came from Sirât star Jade Oukid, who revealed that Pipa, the dog in the film, was actually her own, and had passed away after the shoot. However, director Laxe kindly added that, thanks to the power of cinema, Oukid's dog had become 'eternal'. And in a move so new that disorganizer Toby Rose forgot to mention it on the Palm Dog press release, this year also saw the inauguration of a brand new award, The Four-Legged Fellowship. This went to the team behind Alejandro González Iñárritu's Amores Perros (2000), which, like the Palm Dog, celebrated a quarter of a century at the festival this year and is about to get a shiny new re-release courtesy of Mubi. Iñárritu was a bit too tied up, shooting Tom Cruise in London, to attend, but producer Martha Sosa sent a message saying, 'We are truly honoured to receive this recognition from the Palm Dog Awards, for the beloved canine stars of Amores Perros, who are sadly no longer with us. This year marks a significant double celebration: the 25th anniversary of your awards and 25 years since the premiere of Amores Perros at Cannes. A heartfelt thank you to the entire Palm Dog Awards team from all of us.' What Pope Leo XIV's coat of arms and motto tell us about his leadership
Pope Leo XIV has announced his motto and coat of arms – a long-held tradition for those in the ranks of bishops, cardinals and popes. The choice of symbols and words reflects the person's experience. Leo's shield is divided diagonally: The upper half shows a white lily on a blue background, and the lower shows the emblem of the Order of St. Augustine – an order to which he belongs. His motto reads, 'In Illo uno unam,' translated as 'In the One, we are one,' which are words of St. Augustine from his Exposition on Psalm 127, Paragraph 2: 'I understand one in the One Christ. You are therefore many, and you are one; we are many, and we are one. ' In choosing this motto, Leo includes the identifying symbol of Augustine, a heart pierced by an arrow. As an art historian, I explain how Renaissance artists portrayed Augustine's humility, and what the choice of the motto might tell us about the new pope. The Order of St. Augustine Augustine lived in the late fourth century, ultimately serving as bishop of Hippo in northern Africa for 34 years. The Augustinian order was founded in 1244 after several communities of hermits living in the region of Tuscany, Italy, petitioned Pope Innocent IV to form a single order. The pope gave them the Rule of Saint Augustine as a code of living, which stated: 'Call nothing your own, but let everything be yours in common; [do] not seek after what is vain and earthly.' Augustine's status as a scholar, theologian and administrator made him a widely depicted saint. For example, he appears in a stained glass window commissioned by a pastor in 1622, in which he holds his symbol of the heart pierced with the arrow resting on a book on his lap. The image relates to a phrase from Augustine's book 'The Confessions': 'Thou hadst pierced our heart with thy love, and we carried thy words, as it were, thrust through our vitals.' In this stained-glass image, the saint is seen speaking to a child. The 1483 translation of the 'Golden Legend,' a collection of saints' lives, explains that while struggling to write his treatise 'On the Trinity,' Augustine was walking at the seashore and saw a child filling a tiny pit with water. When the child explained that he was bringing the ocean into the pit, Augustine scolded him for being silly. The child answered that he would sooner fit all the water of the sea into the pit than Augustine could bring the mystery of the Trinity into his limited human understanding. The Trinity is the Christian concept that God is not a single person but three – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – united in a single divine and eternal nature. This lesson in humility became widely depicted across the centuries. In 1482, an altarpiece by the painter and sculptor Michael Pacher shows Augustine with a child at his feet holding a spoon. Augustine's scholarship Augustine's legacy includes not only 'The Confessions,' one of the most widely read books of medieval and early modern times, and 'On the Trinity,' but many others, including 'The City of God,' a monumental work of over 1,000 pages. Sandro Botticelli 's 1480 painting of Augustine in his study shows the saint searching for clarity of thought as he pauses his writing. Dressed simply in a long white garment and a cloak, he has set aside his bishop's miter, an official hat – also a gesture of humility. His study is crowded with books; on the right, behind his head, a book is open to a study of geometry. Botticelli tries to show the saint as a scholar in ancient times by placing on the left an old and discredited celestial model that depicts the Earth at the center of the universe, with the Sun, Moon, planets and stars revolving around it. We, with modern knowledge, understand that despite his intelligence, Augustine cannot know everything. Leo has been both a scholar and pastor. He served as a professor of canon law and early Christian theology at San Carlos y San Marcelo, a seminary in Peru. Yet, like the founder of his order, his words at this first Mass reflected his humility when he said that his appointment as pope was 'both a cross and a blessing' and spoke of the responsibility he and the cardinals have in the world.
