Woman, pregnant with twins, survives 18-hour heart surgery

Mumbai: A 31-year-old woman, eight months pregnant with twins, was rushed to KEM Hospital for intense chest pain radiating down her spine, and breathlessness. Doctors found a tear in the main blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body. But delays in diagnosis and treatment cost nearly a day, and fearing the loss of all three lives, the family moved her to a private hospital. The mother, Tejaswini Hire, and her two preterm daughters remained at Jaslok Hospital for a month. The total expenses touched around Rs 30 lakh, covering an emergency caesarean, an open-heart surgery, and a month-long admission for all three. The twins turned two months old on Sunday. "At KEM, I was told the costs could be Rs 4 lakh, but the risks seemed too high and we had lost trust," said Nishant Hire, the twins' father. The family lives in Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar in Ghatkopar. "We had to borrow from friends and family, all our savings are exhausted, but at least all three are alive and safe," Hire said. It was a high-risk case with low survival chances, but we were prepared to operate. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like We Have No Words For Dog The Bounty Hunter's Transformation Cash Roadster Undo In the end, it was the patient's choice." Cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Hemant Pathare, who performed the surgery, explained that in medical terms this was a case of an aortic dissection caused by a genetic disorder called Marfan syndrome. The syndrome can lead to serious heart problems. "The tear had extended to her coronary artery, and the aortic valve was leaking significantly. This caused severe fluid congestion in her lungs, and she had to be put on ventilator. Eventually, there were more complications impacting almost her entire body," he said. The open-heart surgery lasted 18 hours. By the time Tejaswini reached Jaslok, doctors were unable to detect the heartbeat of one of the babies, prompting an emergency C-section. "Marfan syndrome is risky even outside pregnancy, but during pregnancy, the risk to the mother's life is far more. The most dangerous part is that cardiac complications can strike at any time from the first day to just after delivery," said Dr Danny Laliwala, the gynaecologist who performed the delivery. Hire said Tejaswini is still recovering, while the twins are healthy. "She will have to be on lifelong blood thinners. This is likely the first such survival case in the world, given that maternal mortality in such situations can be as high as 50%, and infant mortality even higher," said Dr Pathare.

Dharashiv woman killed, 18 injured as trailer truck rams 22 vehicles on eway after brakes fail

Pune: A 58-year-old woman from Dharashiv died and 18 others were injured on Saturday afternoon as a trailer truck rammed 22 vehicles after its brakes failed on Pune-Mumbai Expressway. Senior inspector Sachin Hire of Khopoli police station said, "The deceased woman from Dharashiv was travelling with six others in a Scorpio. The 18 injured people have been sent to MGM Hospital in Kamothe, Navi Mumbai." Hire said the trailer struck 22 vehicles, including cars, in the stretch from Adoshi Tunnel to Food Mall (Pune-Mumbai lane) , part of the expressway section between Khalapur and Khandala. "The deceased woman was part of a group of seven people travelling in the Scorpio. She died due to head injuries after the trailer struck their vehicle. The condition of her companions and other injured travellers is being monitored at MJM hospital," said Hire, who registered the FIR in the case. Patel has been booked for causing death, grievous and minor injuries, among others, through negligent and rash driving under relevant sections of the BNS and Motor Vehicles Act. The collision severely impacted traffic flow on the busy expressway in the afternoon hours on Saturday, said personnel from the Maharashtra Highway Police. "The queue of vehicles stretched up to 6km for some time after the accident," an officer of the state highway police said. Commuters reported significant delays, with some journeys extended by 45 minutes or more. Gajanan Shelke, a cab driver who witnessed the incident while transporting passengers to the Mumbai airport, said, "I witnessed it firsthand but couldn't stop because my clients had to reach the airport. The accident occurred near Khalapur. The truck rammed several cars and many appeared to be injured. It considerably slowed the traffic and delayed our journey by 45 minutes or more. " The police and emergency services rushed to the spot after the accident to assist the injured and clear the damaged vehicles. The injured were initially taken to Khopoli Nagarpalika Hospital and were later referred to MGM Hospital in Navi Mumbai. An investigation into the exact cause of the trailer's brakes failure and other circumstances leading to the accident was underway, the police said. Dr Rahul G Peddawad, the medical superintendent at MGM Hospital, Kamothe, said the health hub received a total of 18 patients — 16 women and two men. "The majority of the patients are aged between their 20s and 50s," he said, adding that a nine-year-old boy was among the injured and was currently stable. He said, "Only two patients are critical and in the red category. Six are in the yellow category, meaning they have moderate injuries. The other 10 have minor injuries." Preliminary diagnostics, including X-rays, CT scans and MRIs, have been conducted, and doctors are monitoring the patients' vitals. "We are still awaiting reports, so I cannot comment in detail. But based on initial scans, some have suffered serious fractures in the pelvis, head and spine," Dr Peddawad said. He said all the injured patients arrived at the hospital between 3.30pm and 6.55pm. Regarding the deceased woman, he said, "She had suffered very severe injuries, but I cannot say more at this stage because the CT, MRI and some other reports are still awaited. Her body has been sent to Panvel Mahapalika Hospital for post-mortem.

Sports stars to push their bodies to the limit for Telethon

Basketball legend Greg Hire is known to push his body to the limits for a good cause and with only 100 days to go until Telethon he will be jumping on a bike again to raise funds for WA kids. The Alcoa Cycle Challenge is Telethon's newest gruelling fitness task to support sick, vulnerable and disadvantaged children across WA. Former Perth Wildcats player, who founded mental health charity A Stitch in Time, put his hand up to lead the 8-hour cycling event after bike riding 3249km to raise money for suicide prevention last year. 'I rode from Kununurra to Perth and only a few weeks later was the Telethon Family Festival and I just felt captivated and inspired and wanted to do more,' he said. 'I think the greatest gift you can do is help impact lives and I can do that through this, it's a no brainer.' Hire will be taking the Telethon baton from former rugby player Matt Fuller who pushed his body to the limit 15 times for Telethon with 24-hour fitness challenges. 'This is a continuation of Matty Fuller's physical challenges and what a fantastic legacy he's left Telethon and I'm just trying to continue that,' he said. 'Nothing like burning your glutes for a great cause.' The cycle challenge will take place on Sunday, October 19 at the Telethon Family Festival. Joining Hire will be former West Coast Eagles star and Triple M's Xavier Ellis as well as Scotch College students who have decided to take on the challenge at school. It will be a challenge close to the heart for Ellis, whose young nephew was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis — a genetic disorder that primarily affects the lungs and digestive system by causing a buildup of thick, sticky mucus. 'Telethon has always been a great thing for the community but my one-year-old nephew has cystic fibrosis now so I've seen the inner works of the support via Telethon to Cystic Fibrosis WA,' he said. RAC Arena and the Perth CBD will come alive on October 18 and 19 for Telethon with the funds raised ensuring more than 161 beneficiaries can continue to improve WA childrens' futures.

Thane Anti-Corruption Bureau nabs CIDCO clerk taking Rs 1.5 lakh bribe for processing retired employee's dues

THANE: A junior clerk working with the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) was caught red-handed by the Thane unit of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) while accepting a bribe of Rs 1.5 lakh on behalf of his two senior colleagues for processing and clearing dues of a retired employee. The complainant recently retired from CIDCO in Navi Mumbai and was entitled to receive dues, including gratuity and interest, from the govt-owned organisation. However, to approve the disbursement of that amount, the employee needed to complete certain formalities, for which he approached the junior clerk, identified as Narendra Hire, for assistance. Much to the shock of the retired employee, the junior clerk allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 4.5 lakh to assist with the formalities required for the disbursement of the amount. "The clerk demanded Rs 3 lakh on behalf of a senior administrative personnel, another Rs 1 lakh for the departmental inquiry officer to ensure freedom from any departmental inquiry required before clearance of the disbursal. In addition, the clerk sought Rs 50,000 for himself — totalling Rs 4.5 lakh," informed an ACB official. Irked by this demand, the complainant approached the Thane unit of the ACB, which initially ascertained the allegations and, upon verification, laid a trap on June 20 for the clerk. Hire was caught red-handed while accepting ₹1.5 lakh from the complainant. A case is now registered against him.
