Edmonton Oil Kings make big trade to get top Czech prospect Max Curran

Article content With Tri-City Americans top forward Max Curran expressing a desire to play on a Western Hockey League team with his countrymen, Edmonton Oil Kings GM Kirt Hill had the requisite Czech-born players in fellow NHL drafts Adam Jecho and Miroslav Holinka, so he was able to pull off a big trade Monday. Article content Hill sent Tri-City GM Bob Tory his first pick in the July 2 CHL Import draft (No. 37 overall), the Oil Kings' first selection in the 2026 bantam draft and two other later draft picks to get the Colorado Avalanche 2024 fifth-round pick Curran. Article content Article content After 32 points in 40 WHL games in his first WHL junior season, the 6'3', 187-pound Prague-born Curran more than doubled that total in 2024-2025 with 74 points. Now, he'll be joining fellow forwards Jecho, the Blues' third-rounder, and Holinka (Leafs' fifth-round pick), to give the Oil Kings another piece of the puzzle. Article content 'Max is a guy who obviously has the veteran prowess, being in the league for the last couple of years,' said Hill. 'He can also play wing, but we like him in the middle. He's got an elite hockey IQ, distributes the puck well (52 assists) and can finish on plays. We think it's (goals) an area where he has more to give (22 goals).' Article content With Curran joining Jecho and Holinka, that gives the Oil Kings three imports. The maximum was two in previous years, but the WHL has upped the number, going forward. Curran, the second highest-scoring import in the WHL last season, who has also played for Czechia at the 2023 Hlinka-Gretzky Cup, is smart on the ice and also in the classroom. He was Scholastic Player of the Year. He scored 100 percent in Advanced Placement English, Conversational English, History, German language, Social Life Sciences and Czech Language literature. Article content Article content On top of Curran, the Oil Kings have a deep returning roster of forwards with Jecho (53 points) and Holinka (45), who both played for Czechia at the U20 worlds last Christmas, Gavin Hodnett (62 points), 2025 NHL draft prospect Lukas Sawchyn (55), Roan Woodward (53) and two youngsters Joe Iginla, Jarome's son, and centre Kayden Stroeder who figure to make bigger contributions this season. Article content Article content 'Max indicated a preference to play in a certain environment alongside one of his best friends. Edmonton gave us a very strong offer we couldn't overlook,' said the Edmonton-born Tory. Article content This 'n that: The Oil Kings are still interviewing people for their vacant head coaching job after Luke Pierce's contract expired. There are a number of candidates, some with pro and major junior work for one of the WHL's most attractive jobs — a team on the rise after coming out of a major rebuild, an NHL building, a dressing room down the hall from Connor McDavid and Co. and a strong fan base. There likely won't be an Oil Kings' hire until next month… Former NHL winger Jody Hull was also named Tri-City head coach Monday… The Oil Kings and Tri-City have a history of trading. Back in 2023, Tory traded top defenceman Marc Lajoie to the Oil Kings…Kelowna, host of the 2026 Memorial Cup, has first pick in the CHL Import draft. Article content

Losing graduating top centre Gracyn Sawchyn, Florida's second-round 2023 pick, left a large hole but Hill jumped to fill it with the addition of Curran, who turns 19 in August.
