The video appeared to have gone viral following interest in India and Pakistan-related matters after both nations came close to the brink of war due to Pakistan Army's backing of terrorists. Now, almost two years later, the clip has resurfaced — proving once again that the internet never forgets, especially when there's a suspicious side-eye involved. The video shows Hocane receiving the award from Shehbaz Sharif and then the Pakistan Prime Minister is caught in the act of what the Pakistani news agency termed 'deep-scanning" Hocane, a celebrated female star known for her striking looks and on-screen charm. Even though on social media people shared memes and poked fun at the behaviour of the Pakistan Prime Minister, the clip went on to reignite conversations around the 'male gaze" — a term used to describe how men often objectify women through prolonged or inappropriate looks — and how public figures, even at formal events, are not immune to this behavioural scrutiny. Mawra Hocane, who made her Bollywood debut in Sanam Teri Kasam (2016), recently found herself at the center of a controversy amid tensions between India and Pakistan. Following her public criticism of India's Operation Sindoor, her co-star Harshvardhan Rane announced his refusal to participate in the film's sequel if Hocane were involved . Harshvardhan Rane justifies clash with Pakistani actress Mawra Hocane on Operation Sindoor, standing up for my country
Bollywood actor Harshvardhan Rane justified his clash with Pakistani actress Mawra Hocane over her criticism of Operation Sindoor, saying that he believes in standing up for his country. However, he said, 'Dignity doesn't require putting someone else down.' Operation Sindoor was India's reply to the ghastly terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22. Hocane's strong-worded criticism of India amid the conflict between the countries led to a heated war of words between the Sanam Teri Kasam co-stars. In an interview with Filmfare, Rane, who wasn't shocked by Hocane's reactions, said that he believes in stepping back immediately in such situations. 'It wasn't shocking- this isn't new. My immediate and continued response is to step back. I have no interest in attacking her or her country, which is why I haven't used a single adjective against her and her country.' 'I intend to maintain that standard. I believe in standing up for my own country. Dignity doesn't require putting someone else down,' he added. Rane told Filmfare that his first reaction to Hocane's 'demeaning' statement was to 'disassociate myself by respectfully declining further involvement with the individual'. For the unversed, the Savi actor had announced that he won't be a part of the sequel of his hit film, Sanam Teri Kasam, if Mawra Hocane is cast as his co-star. 'I would do the same as a cricketer, as a businessman. Since I work in films, I am well within my rights to decline working with an actor who calls my country's actions cowardly,' Rane said. The actor, when asked if he'd work with any other Pakistani artiste in the future, said, 'Instead of speculating on the future, I want to be clear. I will gracefully step down from working with any actor who disrespects or attacks my nation's dignity.' After Harshvardhan Rane's announcement, Mawra Hocane had called it a PR strategy for attention, to which the actor retorted, saying that he has zero tolerance for any attack on his nation's dignity. He also stated that Mawra's speech was filled with hate and personal attacks.

New Delhi: Tensions between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor have spilled over into the relationship between actor Harshvardhan Rane and his Pakistani co-star Mawra Hocane. The stars of the 2016 film Sanam Teri Kasam have been taking potshots at each other on social media—the latest being Rane's response to Hocane calling his decision to opt out of the sequel a 'PR strategy'. Rane, on Sunday evening, immediately hit back, defending his decision. 'An Indian farmer would pluck out the unwanted weed from his crop. It's called weeding, the farmer doesn't need a PR team for this act, it's called common sense,' he wrote. Rane added that he was well within his rights to choose not to work with individuals who label his country's actions as 'cowardly'. Earlier on Saturday, Rane announced he would opt out of the Sanam Teri Kasam sequel if the same cast was brought on board. He did not name Hocane directly but alluded to her being the reason for his exit. 'While I am grateful for the experience, however, as things stand, and after reading the direct comments made about my country, I have made a decision to respectfully decline to be a part of Sanam Teri Kasam Part 2 if there is any possibility of the previous cast being repeated,' the actor wrote on Instagram. The popular Pakistani actor derided him for this comment. 'While our nations are at war, this is what you come up with? A PR statement to get attention? 'Hate in her speech' When India launched Operation Sindoor on 7 May, many Pakistani actors popular in India, such as Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan, and Mawra Hocane, expressed their anger on social media. 'Strongly condemn India's cowardly attack on Pakistan… Innocent civilians have lost their lives. May Allah protect us all… may sense prevail,' Hocane wrote on Instagram on 8 May, after which her account was restricted in India. Her statement prompted directors Vinay Sapru and Radhika Rao to react strongly too, expressing their disappointment at her condemnation of India and deciding to drop her from the project. The characters, played by Hocane and Rane, had been popular despite the film's poor box office performance in 2016. The romantic drama earned only Rs 8 crore at the box office. However, it redeemed itself in a re-release in February 2025, making Rs 56 crore. Fans also started asking for a sequel, which made the filmmakers announce a possible next film. Rane did not take Hocane's comments lightly and criticised her choice of words. 'So much hate in her speech, so many personal remarks. I never mentioned her name or resorted to calling her names. Didn't attack her dignity as a woman. I intend to maintain that standard,' he said on Instagram. Meanwhile, the Federation of Western Indian Cine Employees (FWICE), a non-governmental film workers' body, has decided to bar Pakistani actors from acting in Bollywood in the future. Pakistani actor Mawra Hocane has been removed from the upcoming sequel to Sanam Teri Kasam following her criticism of India's military action under Operation Sindoor. The decision was announced by the film's directors Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru, who issued a joint statement citing national interest and the importance of condemning terrorism unequivocally. The statement read, 'The nation comes before everything else. We support our government and our armed forces. Terrorism in any form must be condemned.' The filmmakers also expressed disappointment that an actor once embraced by Indian audiences chose to publicly criticise the country's actions in response to a terror attack. Hocane, who made her Bollywood debut with Sanam Teri Kasam in 2016, had posted on social media: 'Strongly condemn India's cowardly attack on Pakistan… Innocent civilians have lost their lives. Her remarks came after India's precision strikes on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which killed several civilians. Actor Harshvardhan Rane, who starred opposite Hocane in the original film, had earlier announced he would not return for the sequel if she remained involved. On Instagram, he wrote: 'I have made a decision to respectfully decline to be a part of Sanam Teri Kasam 2 if there is any possibility of the previous cast being repeated.' Rane also called Hocane's comments 'unpardonable.' With mounting backlash and industry pressure, the producers decided to remove Hocane from the project. Although there have been rumors about Shraddha Kapoor replacing her, no official casting announcement has been made.
