Odisha, Tamil Nadu crowned champions of First Hockey India Masters Cup 2025

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], June 27 (ANI): Hockey Association of Odisha (Women) and Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu (Men) were crowned champions of the first Hockey India Masters Cup 2025. They defeated Hockey Punjab (Women) and Hockey Maharashtra (Men) respectively, at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Hockey Haryana won the bronze medal match in the women's category after defeating the Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu. Hockey Chandigarh defeated Hockey Association of Odisha in the men's category to finish their campaign on the podium, as per the press release from Hockey India. Hockey Association of Odisha narrowly defeated Hockey Punjab 1-0 in the final match to become the champions. Both the teams displayed grit and commitment and remained goalless in the first-half. But it was Ranjita Beck (34') who proved her mettle once again in the tournament to take the ball past the strong defence of Hockey Punjab and scored the match-winning goal of the match to lift the trophy. In the men's category, Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu defeated Hockey Maharashtra 5-0 to lift the trophy. After both the teams playing goalless draw most of the first-half, Muthuselvan D (30'), Sudharsan S (34'), Govthaman (36'), Thamaraikannan (40') and Ramadoss V (52') scored five goals on regular intervals in the latter half of the game to clinch the title from Hockey Maharashtra. In the Bronze medal match of the women's category, Hockey Haryana defeated Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu 4-3 in a closely contested game. Saumya (40', 48') scored a brace for the Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu, joined by Captain Mecklish James (5'), who also scored one goal. On the other side for Hockey Haryana, both Monorama Goswami (19', 56') and Chingshubam Sanggai Ibemhal (22', 34') scored a couple of goals each to take the game away from Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu and finished their campaign on the podium with the Bronze medal. Also, in the Bronze medal match of the men's category, Hockey Chandigarh defeated Hockey Association of Odisha 2-1. Ravinder Singh (26') opened the goal count on the scoreboard for Hockey Chandigarh. In response, Ladhu Ekka (44') played an equaliser right before the end of the third quarter. Both teams were playing neck-to-neck, giving it their all, but it was Hockey Chandigarh who proved out to be the better one as Harvinder Singh (52') scored another one to make the difference and help his team win the bronze medal. Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], June 22 (ANI): On Day 5 of the inaugural edition of the Hockey India Masters Cup 2025, Hockey Karnataka and Kerala Hockey won their respective matches in the women's category whereas in the men's category, Hockey Maharashtra and Hockey Haryana also didn't let any stone unturned to have a successful outing here at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, as per the Hockey India press release. The first match today was played between Hockey Himachal and Hockey Karnataka in the women's category. Both teams played with equal intensity in the first half, resulting in a goalless draw by then. In the second half, Manasa KP (36') managed to take the ball past Hockey Himachal's defence and scored the first goal of the match for Hockey Karnataka. Rohini MR (42') also joined the feast, resulting in Hockey Karnataka's 2-0 victory over Hockey Himachal. In the next match, Kerala Hockey defeated Hockey Maharashtra 5-1 in the women's category. Susha Mol KS (25', 51') scored a brace for her side, joined by her teammates Malaialagu (4'), Vidhya VC (30') and Neethu PJ (38'), who also scored one goal each. While fitting back, Jisa Chandran R (58') managed to score the consolation goal in the final minutes for Hockey Maharashtra. In the first match of the men's category, Hockey Maharashtra won 2-0 against Hockey Chandigarh. Shakti Bharatsingh Thakur (33') and Captain Dhananjay Mahadik (35') scored two back-to-back goals in three minutes of the third quarter to take the game away from Hockey Chandigarh. In the last match on Sunday, Hockey Haryana defeated Hockey Karnataka 5-2 in the men's category. Ashok Kumar (29', 35', 43') stood out to be the top goal scorer as he scored a hattrick in the game for Hockey Haryana joined by his teammates Vivek Dahiya (12') and Virender Kumar (57') who also scored one goal each to affirm their intentions to win the game. On the other side, Mandanna (15') and Captain Vinaya VS (55') scored for Hockey Karnataka but fell short. (ANI)

Lakra joins Indian junior men's hockey team as assistant coach

Former defender Birendra Lakra has been appointed assistant coach of the Indian junior men's hockey team ahead of the Junior World Cup later this year, Hockey India said on Saturday. The 35-year-old will work closely with legendary goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, who is currently serving as the coach of the team. 'It is a great honour to be part of the Indian Junior Men's setup at such an important time. I know what it takes to wear the India jersey, and now I look forward to helping the next generation of players prepare for the big stage,' Lakra said in a release. 'Working alongside someone like Sreejesh, who has been a teammate and an inspiration, is an exciting challenge. We are committed to building a fearless and well-prepared team for the tournaments ahead, especially the all-important Junior World Cup later this year.' Lakra is expected to strengthen the defensive structure and overall game temperament, as the team gears up for the Junior Men's World Cup scheduled to be held from November 28 to December 10 in Chennai and Madurai. 'Having Birendra join us is a massive boost. He brings a wealth of experience, tactical intelligence, and calm leadership that will be invaluable to these young players,' Sreejesh said. Lakra played a key role in India's campaigns at the World Cup, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and other major tournaments, an illustrious career spanning over a decade. His impressive career highlights include a gold medal at the 2014 Asian Games, bronze in 2018, silver at the 2013 Asia Cup, silver at the 2014 CWG, and silver at the 2018 Champions Trophy. He was also part of the Indian squad that won bronze medals in the World League Finals in 2015 (Raipur and Bhubaneswar) and achieved podium finishes at the Asian Champions Trophy (gold in 2016, silver in 2012).
