Norwegian royal Marius Hoiby faces 10 years in prison for rape charges

The four rapes allegedly took place in 2018, 2023 and 2024, the last one after the police investigation began. Other charges against Hoiby include domestic abuse against a former partner and several counts of violence, disturbing the peace, vandalism and violations of restraining orders against another former partner. The only victim identified by the prosecution was Hoiby's ex-girlfriend, Nora Haukland, whom he is accused of physically and psychologically abusing in 2022 and 2023. Clenched fist 'The violence consisted, among other things, of him repeatedly hitting her in the face, including with a clenched fist, choking her, kicking her and grabbing her hard,' the prosecutor said. The maximum penalty for the offences in the indictment is up to 10 years in jail, he said. 'These are very serious acts that can leave lasting scars and destroy lives.' The Norwegian palace remained tight-lipped after the announcement. 'It is for the courts to consider this matter and reach a decision,' spokeswoman Sara Svanemyr said in a comment emailed to AFP. The prosecutor said that Hoiby, as a member of the royal family, would not be treated 'more lightly or more severely' than anyone else in similar circumstances. Hoiby has already admitted to assault and vandalism in the August 2024 incident. In a public statement 10 days after his arrest, he said he had acted 'under the influence of alcohol and cocaine after an argument', having suffered from 'mental troubles' and struggling 'for a long time with substance abuse'. A tall blond who cultivates a 'bad boy' look with slicked-back hair, earrings, rings and tattoos, Hoiby has been in the eye of a media storm since his arrest. When the rape allegations emerged in November, he spent a week in custody – unprecedented for a member of Norway's royal family. After his release, he reportedly went to rehab in London. Gilded cage Hoiby is the child of a brief romance between his mother and Morten Borg – who has also been convicted of abuse and drug-related crimes. They were together at a time when the future princess was part of Norway's house music scene, known for its abundance of hash and ecstasy. He was propelled into the spotlight at the age of 4 when his mother married Norway's crown prince, with whom she went on to have two more children. Hoiby was raised by the royal couple alongside his step-siblings Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus, now aged 21 and 19. Hoiby's upbringing has been described as being a "gilded cage". Photo / Lise Aserud, AFP Unlike them, however, he has no official public role. 'He has been put in a virtually impossible position: one foot in, one foot out. He is not technically part of the royal household, but he grew up in it,' said Sigrid Hvidsten, royals commentator at the newspaper Dagbladet. 'He has lived in a grey zone, a kind of gilded cage,' she told AFP in December 2024. A cage that has not kept him away from controversy in recent years. According to media reports, he hung out with gang members, Hells Angels bikers, and members of Oslo's Albanian mafia. In 2023, police contacted him to have a cautionary talk after he was seen moving in the same circles as 'notorious criminals'. It emerged last year that Hoiby had already been arrested in 2017 for using cocaine at a music festival. - Agence France-Presse

Stepson of Norway's next king charged in rape, other crimes

Aug. 18 (UPI) -- The stepson of the presumed next king of Norway was charged Monday on multiple offenses, including rape. Marius Borg Hobby, the 27-year-old son of Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit and stepson to Crown Prince Haakon, was charged with 32 offenses and four counts of rape by Norwegian authorities. "Our client denies all charges of sexual abuse, as well as the majority of the charges regarding violence," Hoiby's co-attorney Petar Sekulic told The Guardian. At least four different women stepped forward with rape allegations that extended from 2018 to last year, which included domestic abuse of an ex-lover and illegally filming a number of different women without consent. It was first revealed in November that an untitled would-be royal was under suspicion and allegedly "attacked" a 20-year-old woman in a "psychologically and physically" harmful way, according to Norwegian outlet Se og Hor. He was later arrested on preliminary charges that included violating a restraining order and driving without a license. On Monday, Sekulic added that Hoiby will later "present a detailed account of his version of events before the court." Hoiby, who holds no place in line to throne, became connected to the Norwegian royal house of Glucksburg via marriage in 2001 when his mother married the son and second eldest child of Norway's King Harald V and Queen Sonja. He also faces charges of harassment of police and other traffic violations. A trial is expected for early next year and Hoiby could spend up to 10 years in prison if convicted on the more serious rape charges. Copyright 2025 UPI News Corporation. All Rights Reserved.

Son of Norway princess charged with four counts of rape

THE SON OF Norway's crown princess has been charged with 32 offences including four rapes and assault, a Norwegian prosecutor has said. Marius Borg Hoiby, who was born as a result of a relationship before Crown Princess Mette-Marit's marriage to Crown Prince Haakon, has been under investigation since his arrest on 4 August last year on suspicion of assaulting his girlfriend. The arrest led to a slew of allegations against the 28-year-old that have shaken the royal family. In addition to the four rapes, the 28-year-old is charged with intimate partner abuse, acts of violence, deprivation of liberty, and filming and recording videos without consent, Attorney General Sturla Henriksbø said at a press conference. In June, police attorney Andreas Kruszweski told reporters the 10-month investigation had been completed. Hoiby's lawyer Ellen Holager Andenaes told news agency NTB her client rejected three rape allegations put to him at the time. Hoiby has previously admitted to assault and vandalism in the August 2024 incident. In a public statement 10 days after his arrest, he said he had acted 'under the influence of alcohol and cocaine after an argument', having suffered from 'mental troubles' and struggling 'for a long time with substance abuse'. Advertisement Police said previously that Hoiby was also suspected of four counts of sexually offensive behaviour, one count of abuse in a close relationship, two counts of bodily harm, one count of vandalism, one count of issuing threats, five violations of restraining orders, one count of insulting a police officer, and five traffic offences. Growing up with royals Hoiby was propelled into the spotlight at the age of four when his mother married Norway's crown prince, with whom she went on to have two more children. He was raised by the royal couple alongside his step-siblings Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus, aged 21 and 19. Unlike them, however, he has no official public role. Despite Mette-Marit's attempts to shield him from the public eye, he has made headlines over the years. 'He has been put in a virtually impossible position: one foot in, one foot out. He is not technically part of the royal household but he grew up in it,' said Sigrid Hvidsten, royals commentator at the newspaper Dagbladet. 'He has lived in a grey zone, a kind of gilded cage,' she told AFP in December 2024. A cage that has not stopped him from keeping bad company in recent years.
