USC football countdown to kickoff continues—Ja'Kobi Lane in focus

USC football countdown to kickoff continues—Ja'Kobi Lane in focus The countdown to USC's 2025 football season is officially on! The Trojans kick off their new campaign 89 days from today. You need something to help you while away the days and hours in the spring and summer. This is one way to do so. In this new series, countdown to kickoff, we will be counting down the days by highlighting a notable Trojan who wore each number. There are not a ton of options for No. 89, so today, we look at a player who wore it as a freshman before switching numbers as a sophomore: current USC wide receiver Ja'Kobi Lane. Years played at USC: 2023-present Career highlights: Lane wore the No. 89 as a freshman, where he played in a reserve role at wide receiver. However, he had a breakout performance in the 2023 Holiday Bowl, catching two long touchdown passes. As a sophomore this past year, Lane switched his number to 8. The change seemed to be good luck, as he finished the season with 525 receiving yards and a team-high 12 touchdowns. Lane figures to play a prominent role in the Trojans' offense again this fall.

Three Predictions: Illinois, Brock Williams, USC

Rivals national recruiting analyst Greg Smith has predictions on a big commitment for Illinois, a standout 2027 crop of Midwest tight ends and USC posting a bounce-back season. MORE: Multiple five-stars, blue-chippers hitting Miami for official visit weekend Advertisement CLASS OF 2026 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State CLASS OF 2027 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State TRANSFER PORTAL: Full coverage | Player ranking | Team ranking | Transfer search | Transfer Tracker RIVALS CAMP SERIES: Rivals Five-Star heading back to Indy | Rivals Five-Star roster | Schedule/info JC ANDERSON ENDS UP AT ILLINOIS Illinois, Auburn and Ole Miss are the top contenders for the big tight end out of Illinois. North Carolina is lurking while Notre Dame has fallen off in the recruitment. The official visit to Illinois is the only one he's taken so far but dates are locked in for Auburn, Ole Miss and North Carolina trips. Advertisement It's risky to make the prediction ahead of three officials to programs with good recruiting head coaches. But I'm going out on a limb here and saying that Anderson will pick the Illini in the end. The ability to stay home and help the program build something special in Champaign could be too tempting to pass up. But Illinois will have to fight hard to get this one over the finish line. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH ILLINOIS FANS AT MIDWEST GETS A FIVE-STAR IN 2027 CLASS There is lots of talk about the receivers in Midwest for 2027 already. That's rightfully so because Jamier Brown, Dakota Guerrant, Monshun Sales and Quentin Burrell could end up in five-star discussions. But don't lose track of an elite tight end that in the region for the 2027 cycle too. Advertisement Brock Williams is a prospect that has offers from coast to coast for a reason. He's more of a jumbo receiver at this point but as he continues to fill out his frame and work on his blocking, he'll be an absolute force on the field. He's got all the traits necessary to be a five-star tight end in his class. USC MAKES THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF © Kirby Lee-Imagn Images So far during his tenure things have been pretty uneven for coach Lincoln Riley at USC. He's finished 11-3, 8-5 and 7-6 in his first three seasons. He's 2-1 in bowl games but the Holiday Bowl is the best bowl win on his USC resume. Things have slipped during his time in Los Angeles. So why am I ready to bet on Riley to turn things around? Advertisement It's simple. I don't think college football has figured him out quite yet. He's still an offensive guru who can coach quarterbacks as well as anyone in the country. We could see a big leap for returning starter Jayden Maiava. But the biggest reason I think the Trojans make the leap is because of defense. In 2023 the Trojans gave up 432 yards and 34 points per game. After an overhaul with the coaching staff before last season the team allowed 377 yards per game and 24 points per game. If the Trojans can get to the 20 points per game allowed mark (about middle of the pack in the Big Ten) they are going to win a lot of games. I like the schedule for USC this season. The two toughest games are at Notre Dame and at Oregon. A split in those games and taking care of business elsewhere means a huge bounce-back season for Riley which would quiet a lot of his doubters. 4-Star USC Commit Lands on Prestigious List

The USC Trojans have a star-studded 2026 class. Featuring one four-star who landed on a prestigious list Monday. Class of '26 verbal commit Trent Mosley is now the nation's No. 10 overall wide receiver, per 247Sports rankings. He's also one of three California prospects who cracked the top 10. Advertisement Mosley joins future Ohio State teammates Kayden Dixon-Wyatt and Chris Henry Jr. on 247's list. Both WRs also play in the renown Trinity League against Mosley's Rancho Santa Margarita Catholic High. Dixon-Wyatt and Henry Jr. line up for national powerhouse Mater Dei High in Santa Ana. USC players celebrate the Holiday Bowl win. Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports But Mosley adds to the growing optimism for this current recruiting cycle. He reeled in 17 total offers before ultimately deciding on the Trojans. He's even drawn comparisons to current USC star Makai Lemon by Greg Biggins of 247Sports. "Natural football player, probably more skilled than freaky athletic but very talented," Biggins wrote first in his prospect evaluation. Advertisement Mosley comes with deep athletic bloodlines too. Mother Cindy played soccer for Notre Dame. Father is a past Fighting Irish football player from the early 1990s. He's got older brother Emmett playing CFB right now -- transferring from Stanford to Texas during the offseason. "May not be a flat out burner, more quick than fast but runs really well after the catch and clocked a 21.04 MPH on the Catapult GPS during a game against Las Vegas (Nev.) Liberty," Biggins added. The national recruiting analyst added how Mosley is a "polished route runner" who "catches everything." Mosley is hitting up the USC campus soon. He's scheduled to visit head coach Lincoln Riley and company on June 6. Related: USC Misses Landing 47% Shooter to Big Ten Rival

Kyle Williams Selfless Decision Drew Interest From Patriots

The New England Patriots spent the free agency portion of the offseason replenishing their defense by adding several stars. Among others, they signed Super Bowl hero defensive tackle Milton Williams, cornerback Carlton Davis, and edge rusher Harold Landry. They also circled back to add a wide receiver in the form of former All-Pro Stefon Diggs. The 2025 NFL Draft was all about building the rest of the offense around Drake Maye. New England rounded out their offensive line by selecting LSU offensive tackle Will Campbell in the first round, and then took a pair of skill position players in running back TreVeyon Henderson and wide receiver Kyle Williams. Williams, in particular, is the player who will hold a lot of responsibilities and expectations. He will all but certainly have a starting role in the offense, meaning Maye will be calling his number each and every week. But what made the Patriots want Williams in the first place? According to Mike Reiss of ESPN, it was a selfless choice he made to close his college career. "He had one game remaining in his college career, but with Washington State in the midst of a coaching transition and more than 20 teammates immediately entering the transfer portal, the question was: Would he play in the Holiday Bowl?" Reiss writes. "To Williams, however, there wasn't a decision to make -- he was always playing. Such a mentality appealed to the Patriots, who selected Williams in the third round of the NFL draft (No. 69 overall) and project him as a speedy, versatile complement to veteran free agent signees Stefon Diggs and Mack Hollins and top slot option DeMario "Pop" Douglas, among others." The Patriots' receiving corps will have multiple players that will serve different roles, but the rookie from Washington will have a bigger role than most, and the Patriots are confident he will answer the call.
