Ricky Gervais gets star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

May 31 (UPI) -- Actor, comedian, filmmaker and legendary Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. "Lovely day. Got a star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame, had lunch with some of my oldest friends, and just washed my shorts in the shower," Gervais posted Friday on X after the event, along with a photo of the aforementioned apparel drying in the sun on a hotel terrace. Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos and writer-director-actor Christopher Guest were on hand at the dedication ceremony and paid tribute to the star and creator of The Office, Extras, Derek and After Life. "The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is honored to welcome comedian Ricky Gervais to the Hollywood Walk of Fame," Ana Martinez, Walk of Fame producer, said in a press release. "Finally, a star that will give snarky commentary every time someone walks by... I always knew we needed a comedian's touch on our famed sidewalk!" Gervais is scheduled to perform at the famed Hollywood Bowl on Saturday night.

Serena Williams abruptly bails on speech at Green Day's Walk of Fame ceremony

Serena Williams didn't attend Green Day's Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony, despite committing to giving a speech at the event. The tennis star, who has repeatedly called the East Bay outfit her 'favorite band of all time,' was scheduled to deliver remarks on Thursday, May 1, along with Ryan Reynolds, but only the ' Deadpool & Wolverine ' star showed up. In her place, longtime Green Day producer Rob Cavallo gave a speech, sharing stories with the sprawling crowd about watching guitarist and singer Billie Joe Armstrong, drummer Tré Cool and bassist Mike Dirnt play for the first time in Berkeley and getting high with the trio on Indian Rock, which offers a view of the San Francisco skyline. 'It's kind of unbelievable,' he said at the beginning of his remarks, 'I'm taking Serena Williams' place.' No explanation was provided for Williams' absence. The event, which began at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, was emceed by veteran radio and television personality Matt Pinfield, who is still recovering from a massive stroke in January that put him in a coma for two months. Reynolds, who featured Green Day's1997 hit 'Good Riddance' in his latest 'Deadpool' film, took the stage after Cavallo. 'These guys, they live at the intersection of both nostalgia and evolution,' he said. 'I don't think a band like this stays together this way and is this prolific for this long without integrity. I think it's like the bedrock of what they are.' The comic actor also threw in a few jokes about Armstrong's nighttime skin care regimen and setting his colonoscopy to the tune of 'Good Riddance,' among other comments about the band. Steve Nissen, president and CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which is responsible for administering the Walk of Fame stars, closed out the ceremony by officially presenting the band with the honor. 'This is crazy,' Armstrong said while onstage, noting that the event was 'kind of like being at your own funeral.' 'This is for my mom,' he added. 'This is like my mom's Super Bowl right now.' Despite being a no-show, Williams has proven herself as a diehard fan over the years, spotted in the pit at many of their concerts. Green Day is set to head home later this month to headline BottleRock Napa Valley over Memorial Day weekend, before continuing with its ongoing 'Saviors' world tour.

Sheryl Lee Ralph honoured with star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

Sheryl Lee Ralph received the 2,808th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame during a ceremony in Los Angeles on Wednesday. Officials from the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce presented the actress with the star in recognition of her work on TV shows such as It's a Living, Instant Mom, Moesha, and Abbott Elementary. Addressing the crowd, Ralph thanked everyone for attending and dedicated the star to those who paved the way. "I want generations o see what's possible, that their dreams are valid. That their voice is powerful and their potential limitless," she stated. "I can still feel the determined spirit of that little girl who dared to dream big. Growing up, I felt my big dreams had to be whispered because that kind of ambition could be mistaken for arrogance. I have been counted out, I have been passed over, I have been told I was too Black, too strong, and too much, and yet, here, I stand." In addition, Abbott Elementary creator and co-star Quinta Brunson described how Ralph always gives everyone around her the "show of a lifetime". "To be around her is to be around Hollywood history, grace, and legend," she smiled. "She is a master class in what it means to be an eternal and consistent diva. She commands the room and gives you a show. She is who you came to see, and she is our star." Elsewhere, Loretta Devine recalled how Ralph had a dazzling stage presence when they co-starred in Dreamgirls on Broadway in the early '80s. "I'm amazed at her ability to get things done. That's Sheryl Lee Ralph. She was strong then and she still is strong," she added.

Kurt Russell delights fans as he reunites with co-star after more than 40 years

Kurt Russell has left his fans overjoyed after reuniting with his co-star from The Thing, Keith David, after more than 40 years. The duo were in attendance at a ceremony honouring the great horror director John Carpenter as he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Thursday (3 April). In footage captured at the event by writer Wynter Mitchell, the two are seen embracing and sharing a few warm exchanges, with Russell telling David: 'You look terrific.' Despite both being frequent collaborators with Carpenter, The Thing, which was remade in 2011, remains the only movie the two ever starred in together. They played American researchers in Antarctica, battling a shape-shifting alien life-form in the horror classic. Their respective characters, MacReady and Childs, are the only two survivors at the film's conclusion, leading to an iconic ending where fans are led to believe that either one of them has been possessed by the extra-terrestrial entity. The clip of their reunion in Los Angeles, which has since gone viral, has prompted fans to express their own happiness at seeing the two with each other again. In response, one person said: 'Dudes rock.' Another wrote: 'This s*** means something to me, man.' A third simply called them: 'Two absolute icons and legends.' Meanwhile, another fan joked: 'Somebody quick, ask them if Giles or MacReady was The Thing at the end of the movie?' Some eagle-eyed fans also noticed The Thing cinematographer Dean Cundey standing behind Russell and David. 'Dean Cundey glaring at them in the background is killing me,' said one amused viewer. Besides The Thing, Russell worked with Carpenter on Escape from New York, and its sequel Escape from LA, as well as Big Trouble in Little China and the TV film Elvis. David's only other Carpenter film was the cult 1988 sci-fi movie They Live. Speaking at the Hollywood Walk of Fame event, Russell said: 'There are very, very few directors whose signature is so clearly and instantly stamped upon a film that within thirty seconds of viewing it, the informed watcher can boldly and confidently say out loud, oh that's directed by so and so. John Carpenter is one of those rare, very few so and so's…there's nobody more deserving, my friend, than John Carpenter'. In a brief speech, Carpenter thanked the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce for adding his star to the Walk of Fame and added: 'I was looking for a career in Hollywood. Well, I found my career. And today, I have found Hollywood.'

Roberta Flack's legacy remains unfulfilled as Hollywood Walk of Fame star still unrevealed

Roberta Flack, the iconic soul and R&B singer, passed away on February 24 at the age of 88, leaving behind a profound legacy in music. However, another aspect of her legacy remained unfulfilled: the unveiling of her Hollywood Walk of Fame star. Selected to receive the honor in 1999, Flack's star was never officially revealed, as a ceremony was never scheduled during her lifetime. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce confirmed that, despite the recognition, no date for the unveiling was set before her passing. Ana Martinez, spokesperson for the Walk of Fame, expressed hope that Flack's family would consider arranging a posthumous ceremony. She explained that the earliest available date for the event is set for next year, offering the possibility of honoring the legendary artist with the long-awaited unveiling. Flack, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2022, continued to maintain a deep commitment to her music despite the challenges posed by the disease. Known for her hits like Killing Me Softly With His Song and Feel Like Makin' Love, Flack's influence on the music world was undeniable. She was a trailblazer who broke boundaries, earning accolades such as a Grammy Award for The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, featured in Clint Eastwood's Play Misty for Me. In 2020, she was honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Her representatives praised her for being a unique and groundbreaking artist, while Flack herself once reflected on her success by saying, 'I'm happy to be Roberta Flack. I'm happy to sound like I do. So that feels good.' Despite her passing, Flack's impact on music and culture remains immeasurable.
