Holyoke police officer extinguishes hamper fire on Woods Avenue

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – A Holyoke police officer's successfully put out a small fire early Thursday morning. Holyoke police ask for identity of package thief suspect On Thursday at around 3:45 a.m., Holyoke Police Officer Luis Rivera was sent to 33 Woods Avenue for a reported fire. When Officer Rivera arrived, he saw a hamper full of clothes fully on fire. Officer Rivera went to grab his fire extinguisher from his police cruiser and was able to put out the fire. No injuries were reported. The Holyoke Fire Department arrived and are investigating the cause of the fire. HOLYOKE — An extensive search continues unabated for a Chicopee man who was swept into the Connecticut River while fishing Monday evening. Volunteers from near and far having been combing the shoreline for Nicklas Delisle, 27, who was fishing with his girlfriend when their kayak got flipped upside down. 'I got a frantic call from Mya at around 7:30 p.m. on Monday night,' Nevin Bastin, Delisle's uncle, told The Republican on Wednesday afternoon. Mya Ballard, 23, Delisle's girlfriend, was rescued by a passerby. 'It took all of the rescuer's strength and all of (Mya's) strength to pull her out of the river,' Bastin said, 'and she's a strong swimmer.' Ballard told him that there were a few fishermen in the area, when Delisle disappeared around a bend, Bastin said. 'She asked if anyone had a life vest or rope or anything they could throw out to him,' he said. He urges anyone thinking of going out on the river to wear life preservers. 'Life preservers are more comfortable now than they ever were before,' he said. 'Please wear one before you go out.' Since Monday night, the Holyoke Fire Department and emergency services from 15 area departments have been searching for Delisle. 'At this point, it's about searching every nook and cranny of the river,' said Capt. David Rex of the Holyoke Fire Department. On the river Wednesday afternoon, officers with the Hampden County Sheriff's Department's Marine Unit readied a boat to set off their search. With a looming nor'easter expected to hit later Wednesday, the family understands that the search might be paused, Bastin said. For now, they are still hopeful. 'We are so grateful to the person who rescued Mya and to the people who are showing up to use their free time to find Nicklas,' he said. Massive search effort launched in Holyoke for missing person in Connecticut River

Law enforcement is searching the Connecticut River in Holyoke for a missing person on Tuesday morning after at least two people went into the water Monday night and only one was rescued. At around 8 p.m. on May 19, a call came in to report there were people who needed help in the water below the Holyoke Dam, according to the Holyoke Fire Department. One person was pulled from the river before first responders arrived, while a second person was still in the water. This prompted a massive rescue effort from law enforcement using boats and drones to search the shore and water. The efforts expanded down river and caused the Willimansett Bridge to close until 10:25 p.m., the Holyoke Fire Department said. But despite their search, law enforcement could not find the second person on Monday night. Search efforts were ongoing as of 8 a.m. on Tuesday, the Holyoke Fire Department said. The Holyoke Fire Captain was on scene Tuesday morning. The Holyoke Fire Department's search efforts on Monday were assisted by crews from the South Hadley, Chicopee and Springfield Fire Departments. Police officers from Holyoke, South Hadley, Chicopee and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection were also assisting. HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – The Willimansett Bridge is currently closed Monday night as fire officials work to search for a party in the Connecticut River. West Springfield police seek help identifying shoplifting suspects The Chicopee Police Department and Holyoke Fire Department are in the area of the Jones Ferry Boat Ramp in Holyoke, working to search for people in the river. Chicopee Police posted on social media at approximately 8:20 p.m. that it is unknown at this time how long the bridge will be closed. 22News has contacted both the police and fire departments, and will provide updates as more information becomes available. HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – Crews worked to put out a vehicle fire at an intersection in Holyoke overnight. Excellence in Teaching Awards honor 108 local educators The Holyoke Fire Department states that crews were set to Route 141 and Jarvis Ave for a motor vehicle accident. While crews were on their way, the call was updated to a vehicle fire. Once crews arrived, an unoccupied vehicle was found crashed into a tree and on fire. Crews were able to put out the fire quickly. The driver of the car had run off, so it is unknown at this time if there were any injuries. There is no word on what caused the crash. The Holyoke Fire Department's Alarm Division will be repairing the damage to the traffic signal on Monday.
