What to know ahead of St. Patrick's Parade Weekend in Holyoke?

HOLYOKE, Mass (WWLP) – The big weekend is finally here, families from all over flock to Holyoke to celebrate the Irish culture. 'I'm looking forward to a great family friendly day in the city of Holyoke,' said Holyoke Police Chief Brian Keenan. A year's worth planning comes down to this one weekend, parade weekend in Holyoke. 'We come together and not only celebrate the culture of our Irish brothers and sisters, but also the culture of friendship,' said Holyoke Mayor Joshua Garcia. But before the parade even kicks off, the monumental weekend begins with the Holyoke St. Patrick's Road Race. The first event to bring the community together for the celebrations. 'One of the things I've always look forward to is shooting the gun to start the road race so I'm very excited to do that. It'll be a fun experience for sure,' said the 2025 Holyoke Grand Colleen, Moira Reardon. With a goal for everyone to have an enjoyable weekend when it comes to the Road Race and the Parade, the City of Holyoke has a few reminders for those attending both events, especially for when it comes to road closures. For safety, many roads will be closed throughout the weekend for the road race and for the parade. For parade Sunday, a majority of the roads that will be closed are along the parade route. The parade will kick off marching north on Northampton Street before turning right onto Beech street. It will then continue east on Appleton Street before making the final turn onto High Street. The Committee say road closures typically begin an hour or so prior to the 11:10 am start. Exit 15 on I-91 will also be closed by the state police. Holyoke Police also want to remind spectators that backpacks are strongly discouraged, and both large jugs of alcohol and drones are prohibited. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. For safety concerns, the HPD reminds visitors that backpacks are strongly discouraged during the road race and parade days and that any unattended bags may be searched and removed. Holyoke prepares safety plan for St. Patrick's Parade Flying drones over the road race and parade routes are strictly prohibited and anyone flying a drone in those areas will be fined. Holyoke Police Chief Brian Keenan says there will be around 200 officers on the lines of the parade using the best practices for crowd control. He says, 'We anticipate a large crowd, but the weather looks great, we've also upped our medical staff due to the weather as there tends to be dehydration sometimes with heat.' For attendees, Keenan says not to bring backpacks, as police prefer open, accessible bags they can see into to keep everyone safe. Gallon jugs filled with alcoholic beverages (BORGs) are prohibited and will be confiscated. 'We ask that if you see something say something,' Keenan adds. 'Even if you're not sure it's an incident, please say something. When is the Holyoke St. Patrick's Parade and Road Race?

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – The 72nd annual Holyoke St. Patrick's Parade kicks off next weekend, on Sunday, March 23rd. The Holyoke St. Patrick's Parade showcases prize-winning floats and championship bands from the Northeast. Musical units include international bands, high school bands, and the famed Philadelphia Mummers string bands, which have been an annual favorite since 1967. Beginning in 1955, a Grand Colleen and her court have reigned over the annual parade from a majestic float that carries them along the nearly three-mile parade route. Other local cities also elect their colleens and courts and are also represented by police, fire, and dignitaries. The Holyoke St. Patrick's Road Race is just around the corner! From those modest beginnings, the annual parade has grown into one of the premier outdoor events in the Northeast, coupled with the St. Patrick's Road Race, held annually the day before the parade. The parade route will begin at the former Kmart Plaza at 11:10 a.m. sharp, with spectators along the early portions (including Northampton Street) advised to arrive well before the start time. 22News is not only marching in the parade but also broadcasting it live on air and online. The main television broadcast will be stationed at Beech Street in front of Holyoke High School, beginning at noon to provide optimal live coverage of the event's festivities. The broadcast team will feature veteran 22News Anchor Rich Tettemer and Parade Committee representative Sheila Moreau as primary hosts. At the same time, 22News Anchor Taylor Knight will provide on-the-ground coverage, featuring real-time interviews with participants and spectators.
