Homestead Capital Hires Luke McCarthy to Lead Loan Origination; Expands U.S. Agricultural Lending Operations

SAN FRANCISCO, May 28, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Homestead Capital USA LLC (Homestead), a diversified investment manager that acquires and finances high-quality farmland across the United States, today announced that Oregon-based industry veteran Luke McCarthy has joined the firm's credit team as a director. In this new role, McCarthy will lead loan origination efforts to accelerate the firm's expansion of its agricultural lending operations. San Francisco-based Homestead manages more than $1.6 billion in equity and credit assets for pension plans, endowments, foundations, insurance companies, and family offices. McCarthy has more than 15 years of national and sector-wide experience in agricultural financing, including credit analysis, collateral valuation, due diligence and loan syndications. At Homestead, he will focus on expanding the firm's lending operations and building relationships with farmers, ranchers, agricultural executives and fund managers across the United States. Before Homestead, McCarthy was executive director for PGIM Real Estate where he originated and managed more than $1.3 billion in agribusiness and farm real estate loans. Previously in his career, he was vice president of loan syndications for Rabo AgriFinance, where he managed the firm's sell-side syndicated loan portfolio in the central and western United States and oversaw buyside deal flow and execution. "As sophisticated investors continue to explore alternative asset classes and as we continue to expand our private credit business, Luke's expertise in agricultural finance and his first-hand farming knowledge will be of great benefit to Homestead clients," said Justin Burns, managing director. McCarthy was raised on his family's pear, apple and cherry farm in Oregon and remains active in its operation. He holds a bachelor's degree in applied economics and management in finance from Cornell University, a master's degree in agricultural economics from Purdue University, and a master's degree in business administration from Indiana University's Kelley School of Business. With 22 employees and operations in the Pacific, Pacific Northwest, Mountain West, Delta and Midwest regions of the United States, Homestead primarily works with small and mid-sized farmers to provide capital solutions and improve profitability. Homestead is majority employee-owned and led by Daniel Little and Gabe Santos, Co-Founders and Co-CEOs. Reading Ready Pittsburgh helps kids and parents develop a love of books

Off East 8th Avenue, in Homestead, you'll find B is For Books. It's an extraordinary bookstore, and when you step inside, you'll see the value of early language skills and early literacy through books. Mary Denison started it all. She's the founder of the non-profit Reading Ready Pittsburgh that's behind this bookstore. Denison said she retired from the Children's Institute and is working in schools. "I'd seen that there were kids who were coming to school who were unprepared for school," said Denison. It inspired her to start this non-profit, which started with the bookbag rotation program called Raising a Reader. Through that program, children get a red bag of books, then once they're done, they pass it along to other children in the program, and the rotation continues. Then, Denison decided to expand the non-profit's mission and programs to include Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. With Parton's program, Reading Ready Pittsburgh began offering free books delivered to homes, which helped kids during a time of isolation with the COVID-19 pandemic. "So then after that, that's not enough, right. Then we started doing more literacy programming, and we have little libraries out in the community," said Denison. With the little libraries, Reading Ready Pittsburgh builds, fills, and maintains 12 little giveaway libraries in the Mon Valley. Now, having opened this free bookstore in February 2024, children can get three free books every time they come into B is for Books. "The response to it has been dramatic, and we are so happy to have all of these people involved and to have so many books coming through our organization every month," said Denison. Most of the books inside the bookstore are donated by the community for the youth in our community. "So it is a community effort with donations, with volunteers, and then keeping this all nice and beautiful," Denison said. "Thirty volunteers drive the work forward and help instill a love a literature in our youngest little learners." "It's amazing to see families come in, just being grateful, because books are expensive," Program Director, Megan Chips, said. Now the book bag rotation program has expanded to about 1,2000 children. Children like Jermaine, his mom, Markeya Stewart, takes her three-year-old to B is for Books regularly. She works down the street at a daycare, which frequently brings their kids in too. When she talked to KDKA, she mentioned the "Raising a Reader" program making a difference for her son's reading at home. "You see all his little friends running around with their little bags of books, so I think it's wonderful," Stewart said. "We're able to start a whole new library at home." It gets books into children's lives early and everywhere. In addition to all the work this non-profit does, it also hosts events for kids every month. Next month, in June, it'll have a "B is for Bugs" event in collaboration with the Carnegie Science Museum. Teachers or those who work with children and families, like social workers, can go online and order a whole box of books that a "Reading Ready Pittsburgh" librarian will put together for them to pick up. If you want to donate books or even volunteer, "Reading Ready Pittsburgh" is always welcoming both. For more information on the non-profit and its programs, click here.

Homestead shooting suspect nabbed a month after grocery-store murder: deputies

A month after a seemingly random shooting left a 65-year-old man dead outside a Homestead grocery store, the alleged culprit was arrested on Thursday. Sifting through surveillance video and witness interviews led a Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office investigator to Leon Lamont Hillman, 47. After obtaining an arrest warrant, Hillman was cuffed on Thursday near Biscayne Park on one count of first-degree murder. On April 12, Sidney Report Myers, 65, was socializing with several people outside El Charrito Supermarket, 708 SW 6th Ave., when Hillman walked up to him and pulled out a gun, the warrant read. As Hillman closed the distance, he aimed the revolver at Myers and began shooting. Myers fell to the ground, and Hillman kept firing. He ran away while Myers hopped onto his bicycle and tried to escape, but collapsed at a nearby intersection. Myers was airlifted to Jackson South Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. As of Friday night, Hillman remained in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
