No interview on HC precincts

Kolkata: The Calcutta HC's Registrar General issued a notice on Wednesday requesting litigants and advocates not to give interviews to the "press and electronic media" using the high court precinct. The notice stated, "All litigant public, any other person/persons, and all Ld. Advocates are hereby requested to restrain themselves from using the precincts of the Hon'ble High Court at Calcutta (especially the space between Gate-B and Gate-C of the Main Building and the space in front of the Centenary Building) while giving interviews or delivering speeches on social media, or before the press or electronic media without specific permission in writing by the Hon'ble Court. This notice is issued with the approval of the Hon'ble the Chief Justice." A section of lawyers linked it to the Feb 28 incident when a YouTuber alleged she was harassed by lawyers at Gate-B, and the lawyers alleged she was taking a video of their meeting. Advocate Biswabrata Basu Mallick blamed the ban on the YouTubers at these gates, which led to chaos. Senior Standing Counsel Sirsanya Bandopadhyay said, "I don't see it as a clampdown on media rights. There continues to be a press corner. Initially, the space between Gate-B and Gate-C of the Main Building and the space in front of Centenary Building was used for giving press bytes, but that has now turned into chaos," he said. Police conduct flag march in Sambhal after HC order

: Following the Allahabad high court order, the police conducted a flag march in Sambhal city on Monday evening. Superintendent of police Krishna Kumar Bishnoi said, 'Keeping the court's decision in mind, Sambhal police is carrying out foot patrols. Cyber space is also being monitored.' 'I appeal to everyone not to make any remarks that would question the dignity of the court or target any other community. No abusive comments should be made. No disturbance to peace and tranquillity will be tolerated —if anyone attempts such actions, strict action will be taken against them.' Advocate Shakeel Warsi, representing the Jama Masjid Management Committee, said, 'The high court has dismissed the petition, and it has passed the order as it deemed appropriate. We respect that. If the legal committee advises further action, it will be considered.' On the matter of the trial, he said, 'If there is an order that proceedings should continue in the lower court, then they will proceed, and we will cooperate. We will comment further only after reviewing the high court's order.' Warsi said the next hearing date in this case at the civil judge's court in Chandausi, Sambhal, is already scheduled for July 3. Advocate Gopal Sharma, representing the Hindu side, said, 'We welcome the Hon'ble High Court's decision. The petition was bound to be dismissed as per legal norms. The trial is already ongoing here. The Supreme Court had previously granted a stay, and their writ petition had been transferred to the high court. Now the decision has been delivered—the stay is automatically nullified, and the trial will continue.' Meanwhile, in the Sambhal violence case, police have so far sent a total of 85 accused to jail, including three women, and Zafar Ali, president of the Shahi Jama Masjid mosque management committee.

Violence-hit Murshidabad family alleges police intimidation, write to CJI, Bengal Governor

The family of Haragobinda Das and Chandan Das, the father-son duo who were killed during the April 11 violence in Samserganj, Murshidabad, has written a letter to Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court TS Sivagnanam, and West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose alleging intimidation by the state police. The family alleged that a team of Murshidabad police on Sunday morning forcibly entered the Salt Lake residence of a BJP worker, where they have been residing for the last one week, and harassed them. The police, on the other hand, denied the charge and said they visited the Salt Lake residence after a family member of Das in a written complaint alleged that the family had been abducted. According to the police, some officers from the local police station in Murshidabad visited the Salt Lake residence on Sunday morning, as they wanted to speak with the family members after receiving the kidnapping complaint. But the Das family did not agree. Allegedly, the police forcibly entered the residence by breaking open the door of the house. On receiving the information, BJP leaders, including Shankhudev Panda, Tarunjyoti Tiwari, and Sajal Ghosh, reached the spot and had a heated argument with the police. '…we provided a formal statement (to the police) clearly stating that we had come to Kolkata on our own volition and were under no duress. Despite our cooperation, the IO continued to attempt to intimidate us, though his efforts were in vain. We were left shaken and traumatised by the brazen conduct of the officers involved, particularly Sankar Narayan Saha (Inspector-in-Charge), Rakesh Ray, Bablu Das, Manik Mondal, Kaushik Ghosh, and Chaitanya Das, who all harassed and attempted to intimidate us in clear abuse of their authority. We therefore plead with folded hands for urgent protection and intervention. We request that appropriate Central forces be deployed to ensure our safety and that we be provided secure passage to the Hon'ble High Court so that we may seek justice under the Constitution of India,' the letter written by the Das family read. Meanwhile, BJP leader said that the Das family has been moved to another undisclosed location.

‘Tu Hai Kya Cheez?' Convict, Lawyer Threaten Delhi Woman Judge In Open Court After Conviction

The incident took place on April 2 after Judicial Magistrate (NI Act) Shivangi Mangla convicted the accused in a cheque bounce case. A Delhi courtroom was left stunned after a convict and his lawyer allegedly hurled abuses and threatened a woman judge in open court following conviction in a cheque bounce case. The incident took place on April 2 after Judicial Magistrate (NI Act) Shivangi Mangla convicted the accused under Section 138 (dishonor of cheque) of the Negotiable Instruments Act. The man was also directed to furnish bail bonds under Section 437A CrPC on the next date of hearing, reported Bar and Bench. However, the situation turned dramatic when the convict, enraged by the verdict, allegedly attempted to throw an object at the judge. He then instructed his lawyer to do whatever it took to secure a favorable judgment. 'Tu hai kya cheez ………….ki tu bahar mil dekhte hai kaise zinda ghar jaati hai……..(Who even are you… just meet me outside and let's see how you make it back home alive)," the accused told the judge as noted in the Court's order dated April 2, the news outlet quoted. The judge recorded in her order that the accused, enraged by her decision, hurled abuses at her and threatened her life in open court. The accused and his lawyer went on to hurl barrage of offensive comments, including personal insults and derogatory references directed at Judge Mangla's mother. The accused and his counsel, advocate Atul Kumar, also subjected her to both mental and physical harassment in an attempt to pressure her into resigning from her post. Despite repeated intimidation, she stood firm, stating in her order that appropriate legal steps would be taken to ensure justice. The judge said that appropriate action shall be initiated against the accused before the National Commission for Women for the threats and harassment. Additionally, the judge issued a show cause notice to the convict's lawyer seeking an explanation as to why criminal contempt proceedings should not be initiated against him for misbehaviour in court. 'Court notice be issued to counsel for accused Sh. Atul Kumar to show cause in writing providing relevant explanation for the conduct shown by him today and further to explain as to why he shall not be referred to the Hon'ble High Court for initiating criminal contempt proceedings against him for such misbehaviour," it added. The lawyer has been directed to submit his response on the next date of hearing First Published:
