Honda Super EV concept is the small EV more automakers should be building
At the 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed, Honda is reminding driving enthusiasts that fun cars can come in all sizes. While the Japanese automaker is primarily celebrating the 60th anniversary of its first F1 win, it's also debuting the Super EV concept, a tiny hatchback that promises "fresh, 'fun-to-drive' electric performance alongside trademark Honda usability," according to a press release on Honda's Goodwood activities. Related: Honda's Super EV Concept Is Small, Electric, And Built For Fun Honda hasn't provided any additional details since announcing the Super EV concept last month, but upon first inspection, it certainly looks intriguing. With its upright profile and box fender flares, it looks like a sportier version of the Honda e (which was discontinued in 2023, having never made it to the United States), or a modern reinterpretation of the Honda City Turbo hatch from the 1980s. And its small size would make it a good competitor to the electric Mini Cooper and Fiat 500e. When it announced this concept car, Honda said it was part of a "wider global program," hinting that any future production version might not be as market-limited as the Honda e. But right now, Honda's EV efforts for the U.S. are focused on the roll out of its first "0 Series" models, including an SUV and sedan previewed earlier this year at CES, plus a crossover reviving the Acura RSX name using the same hardware, and the Afeela 1, the first product of the Sony Honda Mobility joint venture. But with Honda already having reportedly cancelled a three-row flagship electric SUV for the U.S. amid uncertainty about EV sales, it's unclear if the automaker would take the risk-which is exactly what it would be-of bringing a small EV to the U.S. The cancelled SUV was better suited to American tastes, and had a ready market to compete in, with the Kia EV9 selling reasonably well. A production version of the Super EV, in contrast, would be a niche model in the U.S. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Honda Super EV concept is a super-tiny rival to VW's ID.2
The successor to the slow-selling Honda e is the Super EV concept. It will be on show at the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed, with a focus on driving fun. While the 'Super EV' concept may sound supersized, it is just the opposite. For this is a tiny city-focused electric car following on from the too-expensive Honda e. The Honda e was too expensive and a slow seller. The first inkling of this vehicle came at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January, when Honda revealed plans for another electric city car. Back then, the concept was in its early stages. But just six months on, Honda is gearing up to show off its next-generation tiny tot. The Super EV concept will eventually become a rival to the likes of Mini Cooper and Fiat 500e, along with BYD Seagull and Citroen e-C3. Read our review of the Honda HR-V Sport. Honda has released just a single image so far of the Kei-car-like EV on a bridge outside the Palace of Westminster. Notable design features include round headlights, a bluff front end and an offset charging port. Wheels are pushed right out into the corners, the stretched wheelbase adding to interior space. Honda says the Super EV is a compact EV that's both practical and 'a joy to drive'. The car is another to debut at the Goodwood hillclimb next month, alongside the new Honda Prelude and the final Civic Type R, the Ultimate Edition. Honda's 0 Saloon will be the first of seven EVs to go on sale before 2030. This Super EV will not be one of the seven forthcoming cars to use the 0 Series platform. However, a small SUV is promised using the new architecture, probably for Asian markets. As for the Super EV production vehicle, that's likely to be sold primarily in China and Japan. However, it has not been ruled in or out for Europe or elsewhere.

Honda Puts EVs in the Rearview: Can Hybrids Power the Next Chapter?
Japan's auto biggie Honda HMC is pulling back on its electric vehicle (EV) plans as global demand cools. Instead, the company is betting big on hybrid cars, aiming to launch 13 new hybrid models globally between 2027 and 2030, including a new hybrid system for large-size vehicles set to debut in the second half of the decade. Honda currently sells over a dozen hybrids worldwide, though only three models—the Civic, Accord and CR-V—are available in the United States. HMC is cutting its EV and software investment target by 30%, from 10 trillion yen ($69 billion) to 7 trillion yen ($48.4 billion) by 2030. Honda now expects EVs to account for less than 30% of its production by 2030, backing off its earlier goal. Meanwhile, it plans to sell 2.2–2.3 million hybrids by that year, up from 868,000 in 2024. This move aligns with the broader industry trend. Global automakers are slowing EV rollouts as governments ease emission targets and hybrids gain popularity. For example, the United States has seen policy reversals under President Trump that weaken EV mandates. Honda also faces rising pressure in China, where EV adoption is surging under new regulations and strong competition from domestic brands. Internal combustion engine vehicles have become virtually unsellable, contributing to a drop in Honda's profits in the region. Honda has only launched two EVs so far—the Honda e in Japan and Europe, and the Prologue SUV in the United States. It also recently paused a $10.7B EV plant project in Canada due to sluggish demand. Despite the shift, Honda still aims to transition entirely to zero-emission vehicles—including battery EVs and fuel cell models—by 2040. But for now, it's taking the hybrid lane. Honda's closest peers, Nissan NSANY and Toyota TM, are also hitting the brakes on their e-mobility ambitions. Earlier this month, Nissan scrapped plans to build a $1.1 billion battery plant in Kyushu, Japan, just months after announcing it. The facility was key to lowering EV costs through lithium iron phosphate batteries. Weighed down by declining sales in China and North America, Nissan posted a massive net loss of 671 billion yen ($4.5B) for the fiscal year ended March 2025. Its EV ambitions now face headwinds. Toyota is also pulling back on its EV targets amid global demand uncertainty. Reports surfaced last September that Toyota would reduce EV production plans by 20%, aiming for 1 million units by 2026 instead of 1.5 million. Although Toyota sold over 10.2 million vehicles in the last fiscal year, just 145,000 were fully electric, around 1% of total sales. With U.S. tariffs threatening profits, Toyota is now 'reviewing' its roadmap, and its 2030 EV goal of 3.5 million EV sales is seen more as a benchmark rather than a firm target. Shares of Honda have gained 3.7% year to date against the industry's decline of 1.7%.
