Groups seek 30% pay rise for Hong Kong domestic helpers to HK$6,500 a month
A coalition of domestic worker unions has demanded an immediate 30 per cent pay rise for Hong Kong's 370,000 helpers to HK$6,500 (US$833) a month and for their food subsidy to be doubled. Advertisement The Hong Kong Federation of Asian Domestic Workers Unions on Sunday blamed current government policy for having left many helpers in a 'hungry and malnourished' condition. Federation representatives raised the demands at a meeting with Labour Department officials. 'The value of our work and our contribution to the economy has to be reflected in our wages,' federation chairwoman Phobsuk Gasing said. 'So many women in Hong Kong are able to pursue their careers because we take responsibility for household duties and care work. Inflation affects our families too, and token adjustments to the [minimum wage] are insulting. 'It is basically like almsgiving.' Advertisement The minimum wage for foreign domestic helpers was raised to HK$4,990 a month last year, up from HK$4,870. Employers must provide their helpers with free food or they can choose to pay an allowance of not less than HK$1,236 a month instead.

10% year-on-year sales boost expected for Hong Kong eateries on handover holiday
Hong Kong's restaurant industry is anticipating a 10 per cent boost in business on Tuesday compared to last year, with an industry leader noting that the increased number of over 3,800 eateries offering discounts to celebrate the city's handover to Beijing will spur local consumption and help ease the sector's woes. Advertisement Simon Wong Ka-wo, president of the Hong Kong Federation of Restaurants and Related Trades, expressed optimism as the city celebrated the 28th anniversary of its return to Chinese sovereignty on Tuesday. 'The different discount packages offered by restaurants and shopping malls will encourage more residents to consume,' Wong told the Post, noting that the number of participating restaurants had jumped from 2,000 last year to 3,800 this year. The offers, including a 29 per cent discount at Hong Kong-style cafe chain Tai Hing and its 15 sister restaurant chains, led to bustling scenes at eateries across the city. At Tai Hing's Tsuen Wan branch, there was a constant queue of over 20 people, with the number at times exceeding 30. Its Causeway Bay outlet was packed with diners early in the morning. Advertisement Other businesses such as Chinese teahouse All Forum and bakeries such as Arome also took part in the promotional campaign by offering discounts.

Hong Kong creates halal Q mark certification for Muslims
Hong Kong has taken another major step towards ensuring a halal-friendly environment with a new certification developed in partnership with a leading business group and a major organisation representing the faith. Advertisement The Hong Kong Federation of Hong Kong Industries and a top Muslim group signed a memorandum of understanding on Friday focusing on halal-sanctioned products and services. The accord with the Incorporated Trustees of the Islamic Community Fund of Hong Kong will pave the way for setting up a halal-related quality certification, or Q mark. Products and services carrying the Q mark are certified by the fund and meet Halal standards. 'I have faith in helping Hong Kong to develop the Muslim market under the cooperation, as Q mark has been a pillar of consumer confidence,' federation chairman Steve Chuang Tze-hsiung said. Advertisement He noted there were more than 2 billion Muslims, accounting for 25 per cent of the world's population. 'The collaboration with the [fund] will empower the community to capitalise on the opportunities brought by the Muslim market,' he said.
