'Chow mein is back, baby': Fall River's Oriental Chow Mein factory up and running again

FALL RIVER — While no easy feat for Fall Riverites, you made it through no-chow-mein May. Pat yourselves on the back and celebrate at your favorite local chow mein go-to because this week the region has been blessed with an early Christmas miracle: the temporary noodle drought is finally over, and Oriental Chow Mein Co. has reopened. The noodle machine at the city's landmark Oriental Chow Mein had been out of operation since early May, sending Fall River-area restaurants into a brief panic as they pulled chow mein dishes off their menu with the loss of their noodle supplier. Fall River chow mein factory: No more noodles until further notice But rabid fans — forced to get by without Oriental's famous at-home Hoo-Mee Chow Mein mix — can breathe easy now. The machine got back up and running June 3, and Oriental Chow Mein Co.'s 42 Eighth St. facility has been a flurry of activity since. On the morning of June 5, a steady flow of customers were in and out of the shop, seeking the only cure for their chow mein withdrawals leaving the business with bags of noodles in hand. According to Nelson Wong, whose family has run Oriental for nearly eight decades, restaurants have also been running them ragged with orders as patrons not-so-patiently await the return of the iconic chow mein sandwich, a dish made famous in Fall River and now popular well beyond. 'Last hurrah': Why customers loved the iconic Fall River restaurant Mee Sum Roger's Family Restaurant in Somerset shared via a June 4 post, 'Breaking news…….. Chow Mein is back, baby! Come & get it!!!!!!' which caught the eye of 500 happy customers on Facebook and counting. They were one of many restaurants forced to temporarily drop their well-known chow mein sandwich from their menu. Others, such as Mr. Chen at their 210 Rhode Island Ave., Fall River, have experimented with making their own noodles in house in the interim. This recent shutdown marks the second noodle crisis Oriental Chow Mein fans have faced. In 2009, a fire at the Eighth Street factory forced them to close for six months. Those currently stocking up in the event of another unforeseen noodle shortage were offered some words of advice from Wong. 'Keep them in the freezer. That's the best place to keep it,' he said on June 5. This article originally appeared on The Herald News: Oriental Chow Mein open: Fall River noodle factory back after closure

No more noodles? Fall River chow mein manufacturer temporarily out of stock

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) — It's hard to picture Fall River without its famous Hoo-Mee Chow Mein. But that's the unfortunate reality local chow mein lovers are currently facing. The Oriental Chow Mein Company announced earlier this month that, due to a 'mechanical failure,' the manufacturer is temporarily out of its chow mein products. 'We hope to have these products back in stock soon,' the Oriental Chow Mein Company said in a statement. The crunchy deep-fried noodles are most commonly used to make the city's signature chow mein sandwich. The chow mein noodles are drenched in a brown gravy and served piled high on a hamburger-style bun. 12 News stopped by the Oriental Chow Mein Company's Fall River facility, and was met by a sign on the door the reads: 'CLOSED! Until further notice. Machine is out of order. Sold out of ALL noodles.' The lack of chow mein has created quite the frenzy. The vast majority of local grocery stores haven't had Hoo-Mee Chow Mein products in stock for weeks, and restaurants have been forced to alter their menus for the time being. And although there are other chow mein noodles on the market, most locals will argue that those brands simply aren't comparable. Jennifer Powell, a Fall River native who's now living in Bristol, told 12 News there's nothing like Hoo-Mee Chow Mein. 'It's just a staple,' Powell said. 'If you grew up here, you know what it is. It's the best chow mein and you can't get it anywhere else.' It's unclear exactly when the machine will be back up and running at this time. 12 News reached out to the Oriental Chow Mein Company but has not heard back. 'The love for the area remains the same': New Bedford Day is headed to Florida this March

New Bedford Day is a day of gathering and reminiscing for snowbirds, or New Bedfordites who have made the permanent move to the Sunshine State. This unique reunion, which has been taking place in Florida for over two decades, is a free event that brings together current and former city residents. Former New Bedford Mayor Brian Lawler came up with the Fort Myers event in 2004 as a way to connect snowbirds from the area and it quickly grew into a much-anticipated celebration. Each year, the event has grown as word has spread and more pieces of their Massachusetts home, including food, music, and photography, have been showcased. Last year's event reached over 500 people. 'Seeing new faces, and younger couples is encouraging,' said the former owner of Shawmut Diner, Phil Paleologos, in a previous article. 'It means something has been created here that will only continue to grow and flourish.' This year's New Bedford Day will be held from noon to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11, at a brand-new location. New Bedfordites will come together to celebrate all things New Bedford at the Crazy Dingo Brewery inside of the Southern Fresh Farms, 8500 Penzance Blvd., Fort Myers, Florida. 'Community makes us richer, and it is a huge gift to be able to come together to have a good time while remembering where we came from and sharing those stories with each other,' Paleologos said. Fly from New Bedford to Boston? Daily flights to Logan could cut traffic, TSA screenings If you have been craving a taste of home, especially New Bedford delicacies you are in store for a treat. In a herculean community effort, the New Bedford Day committee along with Gaspar's, and Ocean Spray Seafood made it possible for a whole pallet of area goods to be shipped down to Fort Myers. Event goers will be able to get their hands on Gaspar's linguica and chourico, Hoo-Mee Chow Mein, and Silmo Syrup. After learning that Publix stopped selling Gaspar's products in Florida, it was important to the committee to bring in these comfort items. 'It was a huge collaboration to bring relief to folks that long for a taste of home,' said Ian Abreu, New Bedford Day committee member. 'We know shipping costs can be astronomical and thanks to these partnerships with Ocean Spray Seafood and Gaspar's we can bring it at a much better price.' Not only will you be able to buy your favorite Portuguese sausage, but Gaspar's has generously donated enough linguica for all attendees to enjoy a complimentary sandwich. For those craving something colder, you will also be able to indulge in a delightful coffee frappe. Amanda McQuillan, whose family owned and operated Country Whip in Acushnet for decades, is bringing this sweet treat for purchase. Youth Creating a Healthier New Bedford: Community joins forces to improve life expectancy, with focus on heart health New Bedford native Zinnia Torres, who owns Tattoo Alchemy in Fort Myers, Florida, will be selling nautical items sure to remind you of home. There will be a 50/50 raffle and a live auction of New Bedford-inspired items with the proceeds going to next year's event. Also, Bandstand will be bringing the tunes and dancing to the event with hits from the 50s through the 80s. 'I'm looking forward to seeing old friends again,' said Abreu. 'Reconnecting and rekindling the brotherhood and sisterhood we have.' 'We all want what's best for New Bedford and enjoy talking about all the great things that make it home,' he continued. 'Even if they have migrated south, the love for the area and region remains the same.'
