The Bison is back: Indiana Hoosiers announce return of beloved '60s mascot

Hoosier the Bison is returning home to Indiana University. On Tuesday, the school announced that Hoosier the Bison, Indiana University's beloved mascot from 1965 to 1969, will be back roaming the sidelines in Bloomington. The announcement was made in a cameo-filled video that featured several prominent figures in the athletic department, including football coach Curt Cignetti and men's basketball coach Darian DeVries. The decision to bring back the mascot comes after a successful football season, in which the Hoosiers went 11-2 overall en route to its first-ever College Football Playoff appearance. In the midst of their surprise season, the IU Student Government introduced the Bring Back the Bison Act of 2024. The bill passed in December. Prior to its official return, the bison could still be found around Bloomington, including an image of it holding a mug of beer at local bar Nick's English Hut. Hoosier the Bison will make his official return in the fall, according to the video announcement. Reporting by The Associated Press. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? 'There's something magical happening here': Indiana announces return of bison mascot

Hoosier the Bison is back! The Indiana University athletic department released a video Tuesday confirming that a bison mascot will return to the sidelines and courtside for Hoosiers sports teams in the fall. IU had a bison mascot for a few years in the 1960s, but it has been without a mascot since. The video uses a "Star Wars" intro, snippets of men's basketball coach Darian DeVries ("There's something magical happening here.") and football coach Curt Cignetti ("Where ya been?"), and an homage to NBA legend Michael Jordan (who, of course, played for the Chicago Bulls). "I'm back," is written on IU stationery, similar to how Jordan announced his return from a brief retirement in the 1990s. That leads into a panoramic view of the back of a mascot atop Memorial Stadium. IU had been leaning this direction during the 2024 football season. As IU charged into the College Football Playoff, several promos throughout the season featured bison imagery. IU Student Government voted to bring back the bison mascot, vowing to work with the athletic department to make it official. IUSG acted after receiving resounding support for a bison mascot on an Instagram poll. 'What's in the box?': Indiana trailer has fans wishing for return of the bison mascot The video begins with a "Star Wars" introduction: "For centuries bison walked through what is now known as Bloomington along the Buffalo Trace. "As a result, bison imagery has been found over the last 200 years on the campus of Indiana University. It is the distinguishing feature on the state seal. "In 1965, the bison became the official mascot of Indiana University. In 1969, it disappeared."
