KUCHING (Aug 5): Hope Place Kuching is providing basic food aid to a single mother of two struggling to make ends meet. The non-profit organisation recently visited Voon Mei Fong, 47, who lives in Demak Laut here. During the visit, Voon shared that her marriage fell apart as she strove to escape from domestic abuse. However, she was grateful her children aged six and 11 did not go through any abuse. As she has no transport, Voon aspires to find a job which does not require her to travel far. Presently, she is unemployed. 'Since her separation from her husband, Voon's elder sister has been supporting her as much as she could. However, with Voon being unable to secure a stable income, the burden is too much,' said Hope Place. Voon said her in-laws have been helping to send the children to school every day, and the house they are staying in belongs to her in-laws. 'But financially, Voon and her children still face an uncertain future,' it added. Donations can be made via Hope Place's Maybank account (511289001160) or the S Pay Global QR code available on its Facebook page. Receipts will be issued upon request. Noor Elnisa Hasbi, who lives in Kampung Tabuan Melayu, sought help from the non-profit organisation after becoming financially dependent on her 67-year-old mother, a pensioner, to support herself and her children aged 12 to 17. Hope Place Kuching helps single mum juggling work, three kids after husband's death
Sim (second right) and her children pose for a photo call with Hope Place representatives during the delivery of food aid and milk powder at her residence. KUCHING (July 25): A single mother of three is receiving assistance in the form of basic food supplies and milk powder for her youngest child, following the passing of her husband in April this year. According to Hope Place Kuching, 39-year-old Sim Pei Pei, who resides in a shoplot at MJC, has been struggling to make ends meet while caring for her three school-going children, aged between 2 and 11. 'Back in April, Sim's husband, who worked as a van driver, returned home around noon, saying he wasn't feeling well. This was the last Pei Pei heard from him,' said the non-governmental organisation (NGO) in a statement yesterday. 'She found him unresponsive when she returned home later that evening.' Hope Place said Sim currently works as a clinic assistant at a private clinic on Rubber Road, earning a minimum monthly salary. As she works during the day, her children are cared for by a nanny, whom she pays RM850 per month. 'Though the nanny's fee is expensive, Pei Pei has no choice, as a secure job is not easy to come by,' the NGO added. Sim and her children are currently staying in a shoplot owned by her late husband's sister, rent-free. However, she still bears the cost of utility bills such as water and electricity. Compounding her expenses, Sim's youngest son has been diagnosed with severe asthma. He requires the use of an inhaler and frequent hospital visits, further straining the family's limited finances. Hope Place is appealing for public donation to help support Sim and her children. Individuals can donate to Hope Place's Maybank account (511289001160), or via S Pay Global using the QR code available on its Facebook page. Donation receipts will be issued upon request.
