A different flavour of cake for every mum out there

Unusual flavours: Dr Kosyilya (in blue), her mother Santha and son Yashyil sample the different cakes at the bakery located at Gurney Plaza, George Town. — ZHAFARAN NASIB/The Star GEORGE TOWN: Those who want to say 'I love you' with a cake to their mums on Mothers Day, can do so with flavours that will surely impress her. Think of Musang King durian and salted egg yolk, jackfruit and cheese, cempedak and cheese, tiramisu and jackfruit, and 50-odd other flavours to make the day's celebration a delicious indulgence. Dr A. Kosyilya, 39, who turned up at a cake shop here with her mother N. Santha Devi, 63, and son Yashyil Prem Thomas, two, was fascinated by the wide array of different flavoured cakes available. 'It is my son's birthday and also Mothers Day this weekend, so we thought that it would be nice to get a cake to celebrate both occasions,' she said. Though the fusion of flavours tempted Dr Kosyilya and Santha, they were concerned that Yashyil might be fussy, so they went for the 'safest flavour' – chocolate. Shop manager Queenie Tan said while the combination of Musang King durian and salted egg yolk may sound outlandish, the sweet-savoury interplay is bold and deeply indulgent for those who enjoy unconventional flavours. She added that for Mothers Day, the shop offered smaller cakes as not all customers would want to buy a 5kg cake. The bakery located at Gurney Plaza also sells various types of cheesecakes, including slices of Hor Kar Sai (a mix of Milo and coffee) and the famous Musang King cake. Tan also said that even foreigners who came to the shop were keen on trying some of the unconventional flavoured cakes. 'Often we will caution them and offer them alternatives, but they are adventurous and will go for the non-conventional flavours such as durian,' she said. She said the shop also sells 'out-of-the-world' flavoured cakes once in a while for a limited time. 'We had a chilli-chocolate cake and a tomyam flavoured one. 'The chilli-chocolate one was surprisingly sweet and was a fun cake, while the tomyam one was not sweet and tasted exactly like the dish.'
