Poor defence proves costly as Stormers knocked out by Glasgow
The Stormers were their own worst enemy as their shoddy defence allowed Glasgow Warriors to run in five tries, leading to a heavy loss in the end. Former Cheetahs and Sharks loose forward Henco Venter scores a try for Glasgow Warriors in their URC quarterfinal win over the Stormers at the Scotstoun Stadium on Friday night. Picture: Craig Williamson/SNS Group via Getty Images It was a tale of two defences as the Stormers produced a poor defensive performance that cost them dearly as Glasgow Warriors clinched a well-deserved 36-18 win in their United Rugby Championship (URC) quarterfinal at the Scotstoun Stadium on Friday night. The hosts were at their attacking best, scoring five sublime tries, but they were aided by a dismal Stormers defence that just seemed to open up for them constantly over the game. The Glasgow defence by contrast was fantastic, with them only really beaten once in the second half, while the visitors first try was pretty fortuitous. Strong start In the match it was the Stormers who got off to a strong start, dominating the opening seven minutes, but some top defence from Glasgow meant they eventually went for poles with flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu putting them on the board. But an eighth minute yellow card to wing Seabelo Senatla, for slowing down the ball at a ruck in the red zone, allowed Glasgow to come firing back. They immediately kicked to the corner, pulled a lineout move and flank Rory Darge dived over for the opening try, converted by scrumhalf George Horne, to put them ahead. In the 14th minute the Stormers lost possession in their own half, Glasgow attacked and inside centre Sione Tuipulotu stabbed through a perfect grubber for wing Kyle Rowe to chase onto and score, with Horne's extras putting them 14-3 up. The Stormers then hit back, Feinberg-Mngomezulu first knocking over a penalty, and in the 26th minute hoisted an up and under which Senatla chased, saw bounce off his knee, chased again and picked up to score, with the conversion making it 14-13. But straight from the kick-off Glasgow responded, with the Stormers giving away a penalty, allowing them to kick to the corner and set the lineout maul which former Cheetahs and Sharks eighthman Henco Venter broke away from and scored in the corner, making it 19-14 which the hosts took into the halftime break. Perfect start The Stormers got the second half off to the perfect start as they attacked from a scrum in their own half, Feinberg-Mngomezulu popped the ball to replacement back Manie Libbok, he broke the line and gave it to fullback Warrick Gelant who passed to Senatla to sprint away and score in the corner. But again the visitors allowed the hosts straight back in, as they secured the ball, attacked into the 22m and Rowe was on hand to go over for his second, converted by Horne to put them 26-18 up after 46 minutes. Horne then essentially made the game safe as he finished off a stunning counter attack in the 52nd minute, and added a penalty in the 56th to push them into a 36-18 lead. The Stormers had their chances over the final 20 minutes to get back into the game, but a slew of mistakes, including a knock on from hooker Andre-Hugo Venter at a maul on the 5m with the tryline at his mercy, proved to be the story of their night as they fell well short in the end. Scorers Glasgow Warriors: Tries – Rory Darge, Kyle Rowe (2), Henco Venter, George Horne; Conversions – Horne (4); Penalty – Horne Stormers: Tries – Seabelo Senatla (2); Conversion – Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu; Penalties – Feinberg-Mngomezulu (2)

Yee challenges Horne in GOP primary for state superintendent
State Treasurer Kimberly Yee is taking on state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne in the Republican primary, challenging him from the right over Arizona's school choice system. State of play: Yee, who is termed out, will attempt to wrest the GOP nomination from Horne as he seeks reelection. She announced her candidacy from the state Capitol Wednesday, touting her career-long dedication to education issues and pledging to "build a stronger and higher-achieving school system." Yee criticized Horne for what she called "government overreach" in his administration of the voucher-style Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) program and argued that he's exceeded his legal authority in imposing restrictions on it. She also dismissed the types of excesses by some ESA parents that critics focus on as a minute fraction of a percentage of the total program. Background: Yee chaired the Senate Education Committee and focused on education issues during her 2010-2018 legislative career, as a legislative staffer and as an aide to former California Govs. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Pete Wilson. The intrigue: State Sen. Jake Hoffman (R-Queen Creek), who leads the far-right Arizona Freedom Caucus, told reporters last month he wanted to find a GOP primary challenger for Horne, whom he called "the single greatest threat" to the ESA program. Hoffman is backing a slate of candidates for statewide offices and introduced Yee at Wednesday's press conference. Yee said parents in the school choice community had been asking her to run for superintendent well before Hoffman's recruitment efforts. Between the lines: The superintendent proposes changes to the handbook that governs the ESA program. Horne's Arizona Department of Education in March proposed changes to require a curriculum for supplemental materials; impose spending caps for expenses like computers, musical instruments and home economics appliances; and ban expenses like smartwatches, multi-person kayaks, Amazon Prime fees and certain appliances like espresso machines and freeze-dryers. The State Board of Education postponed a vote on the new handbook after about three dozen ESA parents spoke out against the changes. Horne last month asked the board to again push back the vote, saying he wanted to meet with state lawmakers who had voiced concerns to him. The other side: Horne, a longtime school choice advocate who previously served as superintendent from 2008-2011, said in a press statement Wednesday that the state education department is strongly in favor of parental choice and ESAs. But he rejected the notion that the program should be unrestricted, pointing to expenditures he's rejected like a $5,000 Rolex watch, a $24,000 golf simulator and a vasectomy testing kit. If the department approved such expenditures, it would provoke a negative public reaction and threaten the program's survivability, he said. Horne added he has a duty to responsibly manage taxpayer funds, which includes limiting ESA expenses to reasonable educational purposes.

Horne challenges Glasgow to display mindset of champions in title defence
George Horne has challenged Glasgow to display the mindset of champions all over again as they bid to defend their United Rugby Championship title. The scrum-half believes last year's success can have an inspirational effect on his side as they prepare for Friday's quarter-final at home to Stormers. But he insisted they can take nothing for granted as they try to successfully negotiate the play-offs for the second year running. 'We'd done a lot of losing big games in the past and that kind of probably gave us the experience to work out what was needed to be done to win it last year,' said Horne. 'But you can't just expect that to happen again, we've got to make it happen. We've got a good, experienced team now. We've been there and done it, but it's going to have to be done again if we want to keep going further in this competition.' Glasgow won 27-10 at home to Stormers at the same stage of last year's championship before pulling off famous away wins over Munster and Bulls to claim the silverware. 'We can learn from it, obviously playing the same opposition, but it means nothing in terms of going into this year,' Horne said of the upcoming visit from the South Africans. 'We've still got to put out a performance this weekend. 'We can't just rest on the laurels of what we did last year. We'll use the experience of winning those tight games, but we know we've got to turn up on Friday if we're going to do it again.' Glasgow go into the play-offs on the back of a three-game losing streak and having lost four of their last five matches. Horne admitted their form was 'not ideal' but was heartened by the way they performed in their most recent outing, a 13-5 defeat at Leinster on the final day of the regulation campaign. 'Look, it's not ideal, we want to win every game we go out there and play,' he said. 'I think from a performance point of view, we were well off it against Treviso (in a 33-7 defeat), but certainly against Leinster, we showed what we're about. 'Going into this part of the season, you definitely want to be at your best and we've maybe not hit those straps yet, but hopefully we've left it until the right time.' Glasgow announced on Tuesday that Sebastian Cancelliere, JP du Preez, Sean Kennedy and Facundo Cordero would be leaving the club this summer along with Henco Venter, Tom Jordan and Jack Mann, whose impending moves to Brive, Bristol and Gloucester respectively had already been confirmed earlier in the season. El Cheapo Cars Ordered To Compensate Hundreds Of Borrowers Following Criminal Charges
El Cheapo Cars has been sentenced in the Porirua District Court for its failure to provide key information to borrowers about their loans. The Wellington-based motor vehicle trader and finance lender had pleaded guilty to seven charges the Commission filed under the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act (CCCFA). El Cheapo Cars has now been fined $115,000 and ordered to pay $341,931.46 in compensation to hundreds of affected borrowers. Commerce Commission General Manager for Competition, Fair Trading and Credit, Vanessa Horne, says that protecting vulnerable consumer groups is a core priority for the Commission — making this case particularly important. 'One of the Commission's enforcement priorities is to take action where we consider motor vehicle finance lenders have not met their obligations under the CCCFA. We are particularly focussed on motor vehicle lenders who are providing credit to vulnerable consumers. 'For many Kiwis the purchase of a car is one of the biggest financial commitments they will make. The CCCFA is there to protect consumers when they borrow money or buy goods on credit, and under the CCCFA, consumers have a right to be provided upfront information about any changes to their loan,' says Ms Horne. El Cheapo Cars breached its variation disclosure obligations under the CCCFA when providing personal and vehicle finance to borrowers between 2015 and 2021. In his sentencing notes, Judge Sainsbury emphasised that 'Disclosure obligations are among the most fundamental protections under the CCCFA, particularly those related to ensuring consumers are aware of their rights and obligations under the consumer credit contract' and noted 'the importance of lenders adhering to disclosure requirements is undeniable'. Ms Horne says, 'The Commission considers this to be a win for consumers and borrowers affected by El Cheapo's failures, who may be entitled to compensation,' 'This case should send a strong signal to motor vehicle financiers that non-compliance with disclosure obligations will not be tolerated. 'Transparency and accountability are fundamental to responsible lending and are key to building consumer trust and upholding market integrity,' says Ms Horne. Borrowers who had a loan with El Cheapo Cars which was varied between 2015 and 2021 may be eligible for compensation. The Commission will be reaching out to affected parties shortly. Background The CCCFA protects consumers when they borrow money or buy goods on credit. It sets out the rules that must be followed by lenders when they provide loans. The Commission opened its investigation into El Cheapo in October 2021, following a customer complaint. The Commission has also filed civil proceedings against Go Car Finance and Second Chance Finance in the High Court, with allegations that both lenders also breached the CCCFA when providing car finance to borrowers.

Cancelliere among five Glasgow departures
Glasgow Warriors have confirmed a further five summer departures as they prepare for the URC quarter-final at home to Stormers on Friday night. Sebastian Cancelliere, JP du Preez, Sean Kennedy, Facundo Cordero and Logan Trotter will leave at the end of the season along with Henco Venter, Tom Jordan and Jack Mann, whose impending moves to Brive, Bristol and Gloucester respectively had already been confirmed. Meanwhile, Warriors scrum-half George Horne has urged his side to tap into last season's title success as they look to progress in the play-offs. "We'd done a lot of losing big games in the past and that kind of probably gave us the experience to work out what was needed to be done to win it last year," said Horne. "But you can't just expect that to happen again, we've got to make it happen. We've got a good, experienced team now. We've been there and done it, but it's going to have to be done again if we want to keep going further in this competition." Glasgow won 27-10 at home to Stormers at the same stage last year before securing memorable away victories over Munster and Bulls to claim the silverware. "We can learn from it, obviously playing the same opposition, but it means nothing in terms of going into this year," Horne said of the upcoming visit from the South Africans. "We've still got to put out a performance this weekend. "We can't just rest on the laurels of what we did last year.
