Motorcycle driver drank ‘heavily' before North Myrtle Beach crash that killed passenger, report says
NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — A man whose motorcycle crashed early Sunday morning and killed his passenger in North Myrtle Beach was allegedly drinking alcohol 'heavily' before the incident, according to police reports obtained by News13. Jessica Woodall, 40, of Laurinburg, died from blunt force trauma at the scene of the crash, which occurred on the Highway 17 north off-ramp at Sea Mountain Highway, the Horry County Coroner's Office said. It happened shortly before 2 a.m. Officers responded to the area and found a man lying in the ground next to the curb, who was bleeding from his head and 'appeared severely injured,' an incident report shows. Woodall was found lying in the grass and had 'grave' injuries to her head and body. The motorcycle was also seen 'mangled' on the shoulder. The report shows a witness told officers that he was in the bar district of Main Street with the driver. The witness also believed the driver was consuming Xanax. Authorities determined through an investigation that the driver was traveling more than 100 mph onto the ramp from Highway 17 North toward Sea Mountain Highway, the report shows. The driver attempted to stop, leaving 74 feet of skidmarks before hitting the raised island, seriously injuring himself and killing Woodall. The motorcycle then flipped over an additional three lanes of Sea Mountain Highway, the report said. Authorities also found a bottle of vodka in the debris of the crash and believe the driver was 'appreciably impaired' at the time of the crash and is 'believed to be the sole contributor' to it. Authorities did not obtain field sobriety tests or a breath sample because of the driver's injuries, the report said. His condition was not immediately available. * * * Caleb is a digital producer at News13. Caleb joined the team in January 2023 after graduating from Liberty University. He is from Northern Virginia. Horry County coroner identifies man found in closet by officers conducting welfare check
HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — The Horry County Coroner's Office has identified the victim in a homicide investigation that led to a woman's arrest early Saturday morning. Frederick Vansant, Jr., 60, was found dead in a closet by officers who were called to a home on Dinger Court in the Burgess area on Friday to conduct a welfare check on a person, the coroner's office said. Joyanna Vansant, 53, was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. She remains in the J. Reuben Long Detention Center. Officers found Frederick Vansant's body after they were called to the home and someone who didn't live at the home and was covered in blood answered the door, police said Saturday in a Facebook post. Police also said there was evidence of a shooting. This is a developing story. Count on News13 for updates. * * * Dennis Bright is the Digital Executive Producer at News13. Brother of South Carolina petting zoo owner apparently killed by kangaroo after stepping into its pen to ‘roughhouse' with it
The brother of a South Carolina petting zoo owner was apparently beaten to death by a kangaroo after possibly going into the animal's pen to 'roughhouse' with it, authorities said. Eric Slate's body was discovered inside the facility just before midnight on Friday night at 5-Star Farm near Loris — about 30 miles north of Myrtle Beach, the Horry County Coroner's Office said. Slate, 52, had a 'history' of stepping into the kangaroo enclosure and 'roughhousing' with it, which is what was happening at the time of his death, local council member Mark Causey told News13. 'It just went south,' he said. The kangaroo was still in its enclosure at the family-owned farm when Slate's body was found. The farm recently posted a picture of a large red kangaroo named Mr. Jack, adding, 'He loves neck scratches and will take treats from your hands.' It's not clear which animal killed Slate, but he was found with 'multiple blunt force injuries.' Adult male red kangaroos can weigh nearly 200 lbs. and grow up to 5-foot-11 tall, with powerful feet for kicking. In 2022, an elderly man was killed by his pet kangaroo in Western Australia, but that was believed to be the first time a roo killed a person in nearly 90 years in the country. 5-Star Farm offers an interactive petting zoo with exotic animals, including camels, wallabies and kangaroos, owner Robert Slate wrote in a Facebook post. 'Please keep my family in your thoughts and prayers,' he said. The kangaroo is not aggressive and has not been euthanized, Causey added. 'It's not an aggressive animal. It's very sad… It was not the animal's fault,' he said. Experts are coming in this week to ensure the enclosure is safe and the animal is OK, he said. South Carolina has some of the loosest restrictions in the US on the ownership of exotic animals. It is one of only three states where kangaroo ownership isn't prohibited.
