Brother of South Carolina petting zoo owner apparently killed by kangaroo after stepping into its pen to ‘roughhouse' with it
The brother of a South Carolina petting zoo owner was apparently beaten to death by a kangaroo after possibly going into the animal's pen to 'roughhouse' with it, authorities said.
Eric Slate's body was discovered inside the facility just before midnight on Friday night at 5-Star Farm near Loris — about 30 miles north of Myrtle Beach, the Horry County Coroner's Office said.
Slate, 52, had a 'history' of stepping into the kangaroo enclosure and 'roughhousing' with it, which is what was happening at the time of his death, local council member Mark Causey told News13.
'It just went south,' he said.
The kangaroo was still in its enclosure at the family-owned farm when Slate's body was found.
The farm recently posted a picture of a large red kangaroo named Mr. Jack, adding, 'He loves neck scratches and will take treats from your hands.'
It's not clear which animal killed Slate, but he was found with 'multiple blunt force injuries.'
Adult male red kangaroos can weigh nearly 200 lbs. and grow up to 5-foot-11 tall, with powerful feet for kicking. In 2022, an elderly man was killed by his pet kangaroo in Western Australia, but that was believed to be the first time a roo killed a person in nearly 90 years in the country.
5-Star Farm offers an interactive petting zoo with exotic animals, including camels, wallabies and kangaroos, owner Robert Slate wrote in a Facebook post.
'Please keep my family in your thoughts and prayers,' he said.
The kangaroo is not aggressive and has not been euthanized, Causey added.
'It's not an aggressive animal. It's very sad… It was not the animal's fault,' he said.
Experts are coming in this week to ensure the enclosure is safe and the animal is OK, he said.
South Carolina has some of the loosest restrictions in the US on the ownership of exotic animals.
It is one of only three states where kangaroo ownership isn't prohibited.

Family ‘beyond worried' as Brisbane couple vanishes after missing flight and failing to return rental car during Tasmania trip
A Queensland couple has vanished while travelling interstate, leaving their family 'beyond worried'. Leannedra Kang, 25, and her partner, Takahiro Toya, 26, failed to board their return flight from Launceston, Tasmania to Brisbane on Wednesday. The pair is believed to have travelled to the St Helens or Scamander area in a rental car. Police said the white Toyota Corolla with registration L67GW has not been returned. Kang's sister, Cassandra, told the last time anyone spoke with her was about 8.50pm on Tuesday, which was also the last day she was seen active online. 'It would be unusual for her to go no contact, she's usually very active on social media,' Cassandra said. Another sister, Alex Andra, posted on Facebook that Kang's last known location may have been North Hobart or Goshen, an area off the route of her planned itinerary. 'Please let me know if anyone has been in contact with her or seen her,' she wrote. 'My family is beyond worried.' Tasmanian Police are urging anyone who may have seen the couple or the vehicle, or knows of their whereabouts, to come forward.

Update after husband shot wife
A Sydney man who shot his wife and severed her spine, causing 'catastrophic injuries', will spend at least four years behind bars. Kamal El Jamal, 35, fired several shots from an illegal firearm into the ceiling of his Condell Park garage, in Sydney's southwest, as his wife, Georgina Vlahos, slept in her bed directly above on January, 12, 2023. Kamal Eljamal has been sentenced. NewsWire / Max Mason-Hubers Credit: News Corp Australia El Jamal, pleaded guilty in Downing Centre District Court in February to recklessly causing actual bodily harm and using a pistol not authorised to do so. Appearing in court for sentencing on Friday, El Jamal cried as Judge Sean Grant sentenced him to seven years in prison, with a non-parole period of four years and three months. Judge Grant said the shooting was a 'very grave example' of this type of offending, which involved 'a grave risk of death to another person'. 'The victim has no feeling below her spine … she will never walk again,' he told the court. The prosecution submitted that the victim suffered 'catastrophic injuries' and would undoubtedly require 'significance assistance in various aspects of everyday life'. However, Ms Vlahos had previously written to the court requesting that El Jamal be her caregiver and saying she had 'forgiven' him. Georgina Vlahos was told she would never walk again. Facebook Credit: Supplied Details of the horrific injuries he inflicted upon his then partner were previously read out in court. It wasn't until about 30 minutes after the bullet travelled through the garage ceiling, the floorboards of the main bedroom and the mattress of the bed and hit Ms Vlahos that El Jamal called out to a neighbour for help. The shots severed Ms Vlahos's spine and caused significant damage to her liver and spleen. She suffered a devastating spinal cord injury and was told she would never walk again. At the time of the shooting, El Jamal was 'significantly affected by drugs' and 'did not intend to harm his partner or anyone else', his Legal Aid barrister Ertunc Ozen previously told the court. Court documents say Ms Vlahos told paramedics that she 'didn't remember anything' upon her arrival at Bankstown Hospital, and she 'could not feel her legs'. CCTV footage from the day of the incident shows El Jamal driving up to the ambulance bay in a Mercedes-Benz before stopping and getting out of the vehicle. He then approached paramedics and yelled 'help her, you've got to come and help her', before telling them he 'just found her like this'. While paramedics were tending to Ms Vlahos, El Jamal fled the scene on foot. The reasoning for firing the shot is not known, the court was told on Friday, and the pistol was never recovered. 'It is disturbing that the firearm has not been recovered and that it remains in the community,' Judge Grant told the court. El Jamal's bail was refused during a hearing in February and he was remanded in custody. He will be eligible for parole in April 2028.
