Local bakery chain Taipan closes after 41 years

Local bakery chain Taipan closes after 41 years Local bakery chain Taipan has ceased operations after more than four decades. The 41-year-old chain, famous for its "ice skin" mooncakes, announced its closure in notices posted at several of its branches on Tuesday. 'Due to unpredictable and irresistible forces, our company regretfully announces the immediate cessation of operations,' it said in the notice. No one was seen at work at Taipan's office in San Po Kong. Outside its Mong Kok outlet, a long-time customer, Cho, said she was left shocked by the closure. "It's a pity," she said. "I hope more shops with Hong Kong characteristics can be preserved. After all, Taipan has been advertising for many years, and I have been their customer since I was very young." A man, Ho, who has been working as an outsourced worker for a decade, said he felt helpless and was worried for his Taipan acquaintances who have to provide for their families. The Hotels Food and Beverage Employees' Association and Federation of Trade Unions urged affected staff to reach out for support. Taipan received the "Hong Kong Top Brand" award from the Hong Kong Brand Development Council in 2005.
