Barry Ferguson SOS triggers a Hotline ding dong as claim about Rangers hero has punters worrying for the doctor

Scrutinised Scotland got back to winning ways with a comfortable victory over a nation that is one of only two European countries that can claim to be debt-free. But the 4-0 win over Liechtenstein wasn't payback enough for the Hotline's disgruntled Tartan Army soldiers where Steve Clarke is concerned. Scott Gowers, Edinburgh, said: 'A 4-0 away win at international level seems great but a lifting-of-spirits win against a team as low as 205th in the world rankings should not save Clarke his job. 'Clarke has tried and failed, the SFA should not have let him near the dugout for the Liechtenstein game after the totally humiliating defeat by Iceland. 'I attend Scotland matches regularly and if the SFA can't see the fans want Clarke out with good reason then Scotland will not qualify for the World Cup.' Lewis McMeekin added: 'Stevie Clarke has to go, we have no chance of qualifying for the World Cup with him in charge. 'A lot of the players are going through the motions. I think Stevie has sucked all the life and belief they did have out of them. 'Surely the SFA can see what the normal supporters see, it's time to bring in a manager who can inspire players.' Drew Ferguson, Oban, emailed in: 'Good players always stand out from the crowd as we watch the likes of Spain and Portugal - so why are our so-called quality players not shining against teams like Iceland? This current Scotland team is mediocre at best.' Sean McGarvey, Cumbernauld asked: 'How can the SFA justify a game against the equivalent of a Sunday league pub team when players have just finished a gruelling season? 'Playing a team like Liechtenstein is not even worthwhile preparation for games against the likes of Greece and Denmark. 'It tells us absolutely nothing and adds injury risks, such as the ones suffered by Kieran Tierney and Angus Gunn. It's utter madness scheduling.' Jim Docherty agreed as he said: 'It's about time that the SFA was told by clubs to ditch the meaningless end-of-season friendlies3. 'Our players have played 40-60 games during the past year. Enough is enough.' Clarke is under pressure but John Scott, Grassmoor, isn't impressed by some of the potential candidates being suggested by yesterday's caller Dr Robert Pender. He said: 'Barry Ferguson and Allan McGregor to take over Scotland's national team? The same bold Barry and Allan that shamed themselves at Hampden with their infantile gestures to the media? 'The same guys that were banned from ever playing for their country again and fined by their club Rangers? "I don't know what field reader Doc Pender is a practitioner of but he needs to consult with a colleague if he's being serious about Ferguson and McGregor taking over the Scotland team.' Peter Cooperwhite called to discuss Billy Gilmour's claim that teammate is on course to be bracketed alongside Diego Maradona at Napoli, saying: 'As much as I admire both lads, I think Billy is way off the mark about Scott being mentioned is same breath as the one and only great Maradona. 'Scott will go down in Napoli folklore but never in the same level as Maradona - and he won't win a World Cup medal.' Finally, Willie Mercer, Dumfries responded to news of another injury set-back for return Celt Tierney: 'You can't criticise Celtic for signing a player of Tierney's ability on a free transfer. "Where and when the criticism will come is when he is injured and lying on the treatment table, and sitting in the stand on match days pocketing his big fat salary. 'A salary that is higher than any other player at the club. A situation that has the potential to also disrupt dressing room harmony.'

A myth about Brendan Rodgers away from Celtic sets Hotline ablaze as Kieran Tierney claim triggers fury

Kieran Tierney's latest injury setback has got Hotline callers of a Celtic persuasion worried about just how many games the defender will be able to play for the Hoops in his dream Parkhead return. The 28-year-old played the first 68 minutes of Scotland 's 3-1 defeat to Iceland on Friday before he was replaced and along with Scott McTominay pulled out of the squad ahead of Monday's friendly clash against Liechtenstein. Tierney will officially be a Celtic player again on July 1 when his contract at Arsenal expires but doubts are now being raised about Brendan Rodgers ' decision to bring him back to Glasgow's east end. Stephen Johnstone, Ardentinny, said: "Kieran Tierney pulls out of the National squad due to injury. Celtic fans must be wondering 'should Brendan Rodgers have re-signed him before he kicks a ball for the Scottish Premiership?' "At this rate he will be spending more time in the treatment room than in the dressing room. Arsenal will be laughing all the way to the bank getting him off their wage bill, maybe his new name should be a sick note." Tierney's pull-out also has one caller demanding the Hoops make one last effort to tie Greg Taylor down to a new deal, despite reports in Greece claiming the left back is on the verge of signing for PAOK. Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton, wrote: "Surprise, surprise even before Kieran Tierney has pulled on a Hoops shirt he's been pulled out of the Scottish squad with an injury. "If there's any more evidence that Brendan Rodgers should throw the kitchen sink at Greg Taylor staying this is a timely reminder of Tierney's inability to shake injury's off. The clock is ticking and I'd like Taylor to make up his mind sooner rather than later." Elsewhere at Parkhead, Hotline callers continue to be at loggerheads with each other about Rodgers' managerial credentials compared to the elite coaches in the game. Carl McCoy, Paisley, said: "So Liam Birney one again peddles the myth that Brendan Rodgers is an elite manager on the Hotline. "Celtic aside, his win rate is 45 percent. Can you really say that puts him in the Guardiola, Klopp, Ancelloti bracket? He is a very fortunate manager who has chosen the easy path twice now." Scotland quartet McTominay, Billy Gilmour, Lewis Ferguson and Max Johnston are the talk of the town after winning silverware with Napoli, Bologna and Sturm Graz respectively overseas but Kenneth Crampsie reckons that praise for the heroes has gone overboard. He said: "Why do press and TV pundits go over top for players who go abroad and have bit of success with their clubs? "I can understand it with McTominay and Gilmour but they've proved themselves already at that level. Lewis Ferguson has had umpteen opportunities and done nothing at that international level. Max Johnston won the title in a poor Austrian league and was fired right in and got found out (for Scotland)." Staying with Scotland, Dr Robert S Pender insists Steve Clarke's tenure as national team boss has gone stale and has sensationally tipped Barry Ferguson to take over. He called to say: "Urgent time for Scotland management change. All gone stale like a wet tissue. Bring in Barry Ferguson and his team for a bit of fight and enthusiasm." With Russell Martin now in the dugout, Rangers are looking to turn the volume up on their recruitment drive. The Light Blues are in talks to sign Leicester City defender Conor Coady and have been tentatively linked with veteran Jamie Vardy following his Foxes exit but one punter sees no logic in pursuing the experienced duo. Robert Livingstone, Palm Beach, said: "Rangers are looking at Coady and Vardy from Leicester City. One is 38, his career over and the other one is going on 33. It wouldn't make sense paying wages they'd expect, Vardy was reportedly on 140k a week (at Leicester). "You really have to wonder why they have shown no interest in (Lawrence) Shankland, he's ready and waiting If anyone can improve Rangers' attack and title prospects, he's more likely than the unreliable (Cyriel) Dessers, Danilo and (Hamza) Igamane. If they get it wrong there may not be a second chance."

Police address homeless encampment terrorizing L.A. doctor's office

A day after KTLA reported on denizens of a rooftop homeless encampment terrorizing a doctor's office in south-central Los Angeles County, city officials released a statement saying they are continuing 'to address the challenges associated with the unhoused population' at the location. Dr. Tahani Soliman, a general practitioner, in Huntington Park owns the building where she runs her practice out of at the corner of Rugby and Zoe avenues. A multi-level parking garage next door to her practice has reportedly been a hub for unhoused people, who are easily able to access her roof, camp out, steal electricity and scrap metal from her air-conditioning units and start fires. The doctor said she estimates she's spent more than $100,000 on repairs and deterrents such as barbed wire and a fence that the homeless simply tear down. Staff told KTLA that police said there was little they could do and that Soliman's calls to city officials were never returned. Frustrated and angry about the lack of support for her business, staff and patients, she's had enough. 'We are living in hell,' Soliman said. 'No protection for my employees, for my patients or my tenants. That's why I'm going to retire. Because of this, I lost everything.' In a news release, the Huntington Park Police Department said that it is actively investigating a May 7 theft that occurred at 6526 Rugby Avenue, which is Dr. Soliman's building. While authorities did not mention the May 27 fire at the parking garage encampment, the alleged electricity theft from the doctor's building or the damaged air conditioning units, officials said they were committed to ensuring public safety. Rooftop homeless encampment in L.A. terrorizing doctor's office 'Our officers regularly engage unhoused with unhoused individuals, connecting them to mental health services, social support programs and shelter options in collaboration with city and county partners,' the statement said. Officials added that they are working with community stakeholders to investigate the matter at Soliman's building, as well as addressing broader issues affecting surrounding neighborhoods. Anyone with information about the May 7 theft is encouraged to contact HPPD Lt. Soberanis at 323-826-6636. Additional questions can be directed to Lt. Elsa Cobian at 323-826-6695. Sniggering Rangers told Celtic Treble tears will dry quickly as Modric is more Murray style moonbeams

Rangers fans have been having a giggle at Celtic's tears after Treble failure on the Hotline all week. But Hoops fans have hit back and insisted their club has the last laugh. Kenny Wilson, Moffat, said: 'With Rangers fans at long last having something to cheer about this season it makes me laugh that Celtic only doing a double this season is something to gloat about. 'Yet another season winning nothing, getting beat at home by Queen's Park yet our captain crying is something to chuckle at. If only your own players have a fraction of his talent or passion maybe they would be in with a chance of winning the League Cup.' Peter Lyons, Blantyre, said: 'Can I ask if true why were you walking past Hampden on Cup Final day when the Govan Galacticos were knocked out in an earlier round by that euro force Queen's Park. Every single Hoops fan still has tears of laughter.' Glen Mitchell emailed: 'The usual Ibrox leaning supporters of a simply unsuccessful club are taking the mickey out of Callum McGregor shedding a few tears. 'This is a player who has won in excess of 20 trophies, six of which came in the Gerrard period, where they won one from nine. St Johnstone won more than they did during Steven Gerrard's tenure. Don't forget the tears from Ryan Jack either when they lost a League Cup Final.' Mark McManus, Purley, said: 'I was pleased to see the usual Rangers support on here celebrating a Celtic loss in lifting the Treble. It's great to see that they have something to celebrate at the end of the season. 'No doubt they will be gloating over the billions they will be spending next season to catch up with the champions of Scotland with the one of six managers in the frame along with Luca Modric who apparently is chomping at the bit for a move to Ibrox. "I say get Slippy back. He has unfinished business as he left early to be successful at Aston villa and Saudi Arabia.' Meanwhile, the Rangers boss search drags on and Robert Livingston, Palm Beach, said: 'Maybe they should have put half a dozen names in a hat a month ago and have Andrew Cavenagh – who knows nothing about soccer – pull one out. If it's true the new owners are giving Rangers £100m to spend they should have gone and got the best – Jose Mourinho.' Elsewhere, a tale of two hitmen with Gers' Cyriel Dessers on target for his country and ex-Celt Kyogo out in the cold in France. Chris Lowe, Yoker, said: 'With Dessers scoring in a Green and White jersey for the Nigeria national team, I'm surprised he hasn't got £30 million rated headlines with mythical Italian teams interested. That's 29 for the season for Cyril, if he played across the city there would be a bidding war.' While Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton, said: 'What bigger incentive does Brendan Rodgers need to pick up the phone to Kyogo after reports claim he has been told to find a new club? I've watched every Celtic match since his departure and you don't need to be a rocket scientist to see they are a shadow of a team with him missing.' Finally a word for a promotion hero. Stephen Johnstone, Ardentinny, said: 'David Martindale has been outstanding for Livingston, juggling both roles as manager and keeping the club from extinction. 'He deserves the next managerial award as others would have thrown the towel in. Well done Davie, you are a true professional, you hung in there and hope you reap the rewards next season.'

DBKK stepping up efforts on streetlight woes

Published on: Thursday, May 29, 2025 Published on: Thu, May 29, 2025 By: Sidney Skinner Text Size: Repairs were made to the faulty fixtures along several housing roads around Bandar Sierra. City Hall will step up efforts to check on the public lighting on several roads between Kolombong and Manggatal to ensure that that the common areas along these stretches are properly illuminated at night. This follows feedback from three road-users about the poor night-time driving experience on Jalan Kilang, Mile 6½ Jalan Tuaran and housing roads in Bandar Sierra. They provided Hotline with the pertinent details, related to their separate concerns, which were forwarded to the agency. A spokesman for the City Hall's Engineering Department said its electrical contractor was alerted to the streetlight woes along the affected roads. He said two inspections were made of Jalan Kilang over the span of two weeks recently. 'A faulty contactor in one the control panels was changed during the first check,' he said. Advertisement He explained that a 'contactor' was a type of switch for repeatedly opening and closing an electric circuit. 'When the technicians returned about 14 days later, they replaced two 150watt lanterns, two 250watt lanterns, five 250watt ballasts, six line taps and a 120metre length of a 16milimetre cable.' He said a skymaster was deployed to facilitate these repairs. A 'ballast' regulated the electrical current to the lanterns and provided sufficient voltage to start the lanterns, according to him. Given as how the lights had twice been rendered inoperative, he said, the contractor kept the road under surveillance for a period afterwards, before confirming that everything was in order. He said Jalan Kilang covered a distance of some 1.83kilometres from the roundabout on Jalan Mangga and another on Jalan Lintas Khidmat. 'Where the divider at Mile 6½ Jalan Tuaran was involved, the contractor and his team attended to a faulty contactor and Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) in the control panel for the lights.' 'We were made to understand that the U-turn on the main road in the Seri Warisan area had been unlit for some time.' He elaborated that a MCB prevented electrical hazards by detecting and interrupting abnormal currents and short circuits. 'A follow-up check was made three weeks later, during which time the lights were found to be out of order. 'The contractor replaced two 250watt lanterns, two 250watt ballasts and four line taps in this instance.' He said the individual kept tabs on the public lighting in this part of Jalan Tuaran on and off over the coming weeks to ensure that the section of the road near the U-turn was properly illuminated at night. On top of this, the spokesman said four service lines, three ballasts, four 'ignitors' and four lanterns were replaced in the residential area at Bandar Sierra. 'An 'ignitor' functions as a starter to increase the initial voltage to make the lanterns glow.' He said the related fixtures were found to be malfunctioning along Lorong Sierra 1/ 1A, Lorong Sierra 1A, Lorong Sierra 1A, Lorong Sierra 1B and Lorong Sierra 1/ 1B. 'All the lights on Lorong Sierra 1/ 1B, which extends for about 167metres, were found to have broken down.' He said the contractor did a day-time test, at the time, to ensure that these amenities were coming on as they should. 'He also went back after dark to determine if the road was adequately lit.' When asked how often maintenance was carried out on those streetlights under City Hall's jurisdiction, the spokesman said there was no fixed-schedule for this work. 'These amenities are attended to as and when it becomes necessary to do so.' * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
