Man spends hours on roof after running away from police

Roads around a Blackpool shopping centre were closed after a man climbed onto a roof, and spent hours up there. Blackpool Police said they were trying to arrest a man after reports of an alleged assault in the resort at about 06:00 BST when he attacked two female police officers. The officers were not seriously injured however the man ran onto a roof of a nearby building, leading to streets around Houndshill Shopping Centre being closed. Following negotiations the man came down and roads have since reopened. A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault, assaulting a police officer, and escaping lawful custody. He remains in custody A Lancashire Police representative said: "Thank you for your patience while the roads were closed, to allow us to prioritise the safety of the man and the public." Blackpool streets taped off as man climbs onto roof 'after assault arrest'

A major cordon is in place in Blackpool town centre after a suspect made off from police and climbed onto a roof. Officers have taped off a large section of the town centre close to Houndshill Shopping Centre this morning (May 11) while specialist negotiators work at the scene. Lancashire Police says it was called out to reports of an assault at 6am before arresting a man. Images from Blackpool 999s show a number of streets taped off this morning. A cordon is currently in place between Victoria Street, Coronation Street, Leopold Grove, Adelaide Street and Albert Road. Firefighters and paramedics have joined police in attendance at the scene, and residents are being asked to avoid the area. A Lancashire Police spokesperson said: "We are currently responding to an incident in the Victoria Street area of Blackpool. "Shortly after 6am this morning, our officers responded to a report of an assault in Blackpool, and a man was arrested. The man made off from our officers, before climbing onto the roof of a nearby building. "Officers, including specialist negotiators are currently at the scene.
