The next generation of Malaysian fashion: Bernard Chandran's sons take the stage

Terimunite and Tanestrran Chandran grew up with fashion woven into their daily lives. Their father's prolific career shaped their earliest memories – fittings, sketches and shows were simply routine. Now, the brothers are stepping into the industry themselves with menswear brand Figure. Yes, their father is none other than Datuk Seri Bernard Chandran, whose name has become synonymous with Malaysian fashion. He is known for his bold designs, royal clientele, and a career that has made waves beyond local borders. For 24-year-old Tanestrran though, it was never about stepping out of their father's shadow. 'People on the outside think about that more than we do. For us, it's really just about doing what's needed and staying focused,' says the more creatively inclined of the two. Terimunite, 31, who handles the business side of their brand, shares that their work now is more about preserving the family name. 'I think my dad has always made us a priority, no matter how busy his career got. This business is just an extension of that,' he shares. Their menswear brand offers modern menswear that meets classic principles. Photo: Figure Read more: Storytelling fuels Malaysian artiste Amy Loh's creativity and personal style That familial bond is immediately felt when stepping into their boutique. Decorated in a masculine style – dark accents, clean lines, leather furnishings and subtle metallic details, the space also carries personal touches that speak to who they are and where they come from. A pair of vintage chairs, once used as props in the 1960s Batman television series starring Adam West, were bought by their father years ago from a vintage store. Nearby, a collection of Mickey Mouse figurines represents each member of their family (interesting detail: their mother, Mary Lourdes-Chandran, is a former model). So far, only two of the five Chandran siblings have inherited the interest in fashion – though when asked, the answer is a teasing 'for now'. Terimunite and Tanestrran have this in common: neither studied fashion. The older brother has a business administration degree, while the younger studied psychology. They also share similar views on their father's parenting style, particularly when it comes to how closely he monitors their work on the Figure brand. When asked if they consider him a 'helicopter parent', they jokingly say yes in unison. 'He wants to help us out in any way he can. He also wants us to realise the weight of what we're doing,' Tanestrran adds, this time in all seriousness. What sparked the decision to follow in your father's footsteps? Terimunite: The turning point for me came while I was watching House Of Gucci. It showed how the brand began with leather goods, and how the next generation of the Gucci family stepped in to grow it into what it is today. That really struck a chord with me. I realised I had a similar opportunity. I'd watched my dad create beautiful garments for years, and I started asking myself – why am I not part of this? A few years ago, my dad acquired a tailoring boutique, and I thought maybe this is something I could get involved in. I've always been into menswear, and so is my brother – so I figured, why not get him to join me too? Before all this, I honestly never imagined myself working in fashion. I always thought it was a tough industry to break into. What is your personal take on fashion? How do you approach menswear – both in terms of your own style and dressing up? Tanestrran: A lot of people come into fashion with this heavy sense of theory. There's so much studying, overthinking, and trying to fit into certain moulds. But for me, it's really about being yourself and feeling comfortable with your own style. Fashion should feel organic, not something you overanalyse based on whether something is trendy or whether people will like it. It's good to be aware of trends, to understand what's happening globally in the industry. When it comes to dressing yourself though, it should ultimately come down to what feels right for you. The boutique gives off a masculine feel, designed with bold lines, rich materials, and a subdued, confident palette. Terimunite: I focus more on operations, pricing, finances and overall strategy. My brother leans toward the creative side of things. He also plays an important role as the bridge between me and our dad. Sometimes there are things I find hard to communicate, especially when it comes to creative direction, and my brother is really good at putting those thoughts into words. He understands both my perspective and our dad's, and he's able to connect the two in a way that works for all of us. Can you share a memorable moment you have had with your father while witnessing his creative process? Tanestrran: There are just simply too many. One of the most recent was when putting together the Spring/Summer 2026 fashion show for Figure. I got to work closely with him, and it was really fascinating to witness how his mind works, especially during the styling process. We were preparing everything ahead of time with the models, and at one point, he pulled out a piece from his 2006 London Fashion Week collection – a cummerbund that he had originally modernised for womenswear. Almost 20 years later, he just put it on the model during a test shoot, and surprisingly, it ended up becoming an integral part of the final collection. That spontaneous, organic moment really stood out to me. Nepo babies have become a hot topic on social media. What are your thoughts on the conversation, and how would you respond if someone labelled you as one? Terimunite: Growing up, it was tough because there was always this feeling that no matter what you did, it would never ever be enough – that it would always be compared to your parent's success. At one point, I really wanted to break away and do everything on my own. I didn't want to take anything from my father or rely on his name. But as I got older and started working, people around me would say, 'Why not make the most of what you have?' That eventually made me realise – if you're given an opportunity, use it. There's no shame in that. So for me, it's about honouring my family's name – not taking it for granted, not tarnishing it – but doing the work, doing it well, and giving back. If you're doing it with integrity and in a positive way, then embrace the label. Do you think the idea of men dressing up and taking interest in fashion has changed over the different generations? Tanestrran: The scene has really blown up thanks to social media, even for those who aren't necessarily into fashion. There are drawbacks – like the rise of a 'clone' culture, but it's also opened the door to greater freedom and self-expression, with men interpreting fashion in more interesting and authentic ways.

Actor Jared Leto accused of sexual misconduct by nine women

Though Jared Leto's representative has 'expressly denied' the allegations, the actor-musician has yet to respond to them. PHOTO: AFP American actor and musician Jared Leto, who starred in films such as The Suicide Squad (2016) and House Of Gucci (2021), has been accused of sexual assault by nine women as young as 16 at the time of the alleged incidents. These accusations stretch over two decades, in which Leto, 53, is said to have continued to engage with the women. The accusations resurfaced when Los Angeles-based DJ Allie Teilz, 30, reposted one of her Facebook posts from 2012, in which she alleged that Leto had assaulted her when she was 17. She wrote: 'You're not really in Los Angeles until Jared Leto tries to force himself on you backstage… I was assaulted and traumatised by this creep when I was 17.' She described his actions as 'predatory, terrifying and unacceptable', as Leto 'knew her age', but claimed he 'did not care'. A second anonymous victim alleged that Leto approached her at a cafe in Los Angeles in 2006 when she was 16, according to a report by US-based newsletter Air Mail. Leto was said to have struck up a 'quick conversation' with the girl and got her number. According to the woman, their late-night conversations 'turned sexual'. Former model Laura La Rue, 33, also claimed that Leto had 'flirted' with her and 'teased' her when he invited her to his Los Angeles home after they had met at an animal rights benefit when she was 16. During a separate visit, Leto walked out of a room completely naked in front of her, claimed La Rue, who was 17 at that time. 'He just walked out... like it was normal… I thought maybe this was just what adult men do,' La Rue told Air Mail. Leto's representative denied La Rue's claims, stating: 'Their communications contain nothing sexual or inappropriate and Ms La Rue later applied to work as Mr Leto's personal assistant, further underscoring the absence of anything inappropriate in any of their interactions.' Though Leto's representative has 'expressly denied' the allegations, the actor has yet to respond to them. Leto, who made his acting debut in the television series Camp Wilder in 1992, won a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for playing a transgender woman in the biographical drama Dallas Buyers Club (2013). In 2024, he performed at the Formula One Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix as the lead singer of rock band Thirty Seconds To Mars, which he co-founded with his brother Shannon Leto in 1998. Perfect Celebrity: Unmasking the many faces and facets of Lady Gaga

American singer Lady Gaga has showcased many different talents and interests over the years. ST GRAPHIC: BILLY KER Perfect Celebrity: Unmasking the many faces and facets of Lady Gaga Ever since she rose to fame in the late 2000s, American pop star Lady Gaga has continuously showcased a variety of talents and interests, from fashion to acting to a fixation with fame and pop culture. Before she caps off her four-night concert run at Singapore's National Stadium on May 24, The Straits Times correspondent Yamini Chinnuswamy and executive artist Billy Ker explore the many personas and facets of the 39-year-old singer-songwriter. ★ Stefani PHOTO: CONVENT OF THE SACRED HEART To her loved ones, Lady Gaga is known as Stefani Germanotta, an Italian-American who was born and raised in Manhattan, New York City. While Lady Gaga is a larger-than-life performer, Germanotta has been described as soft-spoken, shy and introverted by fans who have met her in the wild. ★ Poker Face Lady Gaga played Italian former socialite Patrizia Reggiani in the crime biopic House Of Gucci (2021). PHOTO: MGM / COURTESY EVERETT COLLECTION Lady Gaga made her first foray into acting with horror series American Horror Story: Hotel (2015 to 2016) as a villainous vampire. It was in 2018 when she came into her own as the female lead in the romantic drama A Star Is Born – earning a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her role as fledgling singer-songwriter Ally Campana. She also won acclaim for playing Italian former socialite Patrizia Reggiani in the crime biopic House Of Gucci (2021), directed by English film-maker Ridley Scott. ★ Spin That Record PHOTO: INSTAGRAM/LADY GAGA Lady Gaga's music chops are legitimate, having been trained in classical piano since she was four. Over the years, she showed off her skills with the guitar, keytar and drums while on stage. She also won much acclaim for her two collaborative jazz albums with the late American singer Tony Bennett: Cheek To Cheek (2014) and Love For Sale (2021). In 2014, she said at a promotional press event: 'It's funny, but jazz (is) a little more comfortable for me (to sing) than pop music.' ★ Queen of Artpop PHOTOS: ST FILE, HOONG QI HAO, MAC COSMETICS Art is a vehicle for Lady Gaga's music, an idea that she openly expressed by naming her third solo album, released in 2013, Artpop. She even hand-picked a team of designers and artists – the Haus of Gaga – to help her make her performances, music videos and album visuals as arresting and avant-garde as her music. Her most iconic style choices over the years have been fuelled by the idea of clothing as art, over conventional ideas of what is trendy or considered 'fashion'. As she told The New Yorker in 2009: 'The objective is to always be (crafting an outfit) that belongs in a museum.' ◆ Holy Fool PHOTO: SCREENGRAB FROM YOUTUBE Lady Gaga was raised Roman Catholic, and many of her popular songs and music videos grapple with key motifs and biblical imagery from Christianity and Catholicism. Most famously, Judas (2011) is named after the treacherous disciple of Jesus Christ and includes the lyrics: 'Jesus is my virtue, and Judas is the demon I cling to.' In 2010, she admitted in a television interview with American talk show host Larry King to struggling with her' feelings about the church', but added: 'I believe in God, I'm very spiritual, I pray.' ◆ Poison On The Inside Lady Gaga's music video for Marry The Night (2011). PHOTO: SCREENGRAB FROM YOUTUBE 'I would say that my mental health always played a really powerful role in making music,' Lady Gaga mused in an interview with Teen Vogue in March. The music video for Marry The Night (2011), which she has described as being autobiographical, is partly set in a psychiatric hospital. In 2019, she told Elle magazine about experiencing post-traumatic stress in the wake of a prolonged period of sexual assault, saying 'I fully dissociated'. ◆ Fame Monster PHOTO: INTERSCOPE RECORDS From the beginning, Lady Gaga has interrogated pop culture and the concept of fame and celebrity in the modern age. Her debut album, released in 2008, was called The Fame. One of the big hits off that record was Paparazzi, which she once described as 'a love song about fame or love – can you have both, or can you only have one?' A year later, The Fame was reissued as The Fame Monster, with bonus tracks intended to explore the darker side of fame. One of the tracks on her latest record, Mayhem (2025), is called Perfect Celebrity, and her film A Star Is Born is a cautionary tale about the perils of popularity. ◆ The Beast PHOTO: INTERSCOPE RECORDS A recurring motif in Lady Gaga's work is her preoccupation with the supernatural. The Fame Monster (2009) track Teeth features vampiric imagery, while Monster off the same record likens a love interest to a monster that 'ate my heart'. The Beast, off Mayhem, draws parallels between her Gaga persona and the human-beast duality of werewolves. She has also proudly dubbed her fans Little Monsters, with herself as Mother Monster, often calling on them to 'put their paws up' during her concerts. ◆ Rainbow Spirit PHOTO: GETTY IMAGES Lady Gaga has staunchly supported the LGBTQ community from the beginning. Her iconic meat dress, worn to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, was a statement against not the meat industry but the US military's 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy, which barred openly gay and bisexual people from service. Her 2012 anthem, Born This Way, urged her fans and listeners to love themselves regardless of their race, religion, gender or sexual identity.
