Sony's Wayne Garvie Roasts 'Ridiculous' Channel 4 In-House Plan: 'It Could Be Potentially Disastrous'

The new Channel 4 in-house productions biz is 'preposterous,' 'ridiculous' and 'potentially disastrous' for the nation's irreverent public broadcaster, according to Sony international boss Wayne Garvie. Garvie did not hold back at the Deloitte Conference this morning when queried over the future in-house biz, which is currently seeking a boss. 'Those of us who run in-house production businesses know how difficult it is,' said Garvie, who oversees the likes of Doctor Who, Industry and Sex Education via Sony labels. 'If you're starting out and you don't own IP and have no institutional knowledge of how to run a production business it could be potentially disastrous for Channel 4.' Garvie variously described the plan, which came in after Channel 4 avoided privatization and will allow it to own IP for the first time in its 40-year history, as 'ridiculous' and 'preposterous.' Last month, Channel 4 said it plans to take majority stakes in third-party production companies as part of the plan to move into in-house production. Jonathan Allan, Channel 4's COO and incoming interim CEO, declined to reveal the value of the company's indie investment war chest. Channel 4 has cash reserves of £111M ($150M). 'You lose money after the first three years,' added Garvie today. 'Maybe you make money in five years if you have great people but not money that will help Channel 4 really grow.' Instead, he said Channel 4 should be thinking in a blue sky way about how it can combine with the BBC. 'We have five PSBs here in Britain, most other countries have one,' added Garvie. 'The future surely is the BBC and Channel 4 coming together and that should be focus of the new chair of Channel 4 and its CEO.' Garvie was speaking at the Deloitte and Enders Media & Telecoms 2025 and Beyond Conference after Sky boss Dana Strong and before Netflix EMEA chief Larry Tanz and UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy. Film showcase to celebrate northern youth culture

The National Science and Media Museum in Bradford is planning to host a season of films dedicated to youth culture in the North. The museum's Pictureville Cinema will be showing a mixture of classics, such as Shane Meadows' This is England, and debut films by up-and-coming talent, as part of a project celebrating Bradford's status as the UK's youngest city - by population - with 26% of residents aged under 18. The showcase, from 30 May-13 June, has been curated by Bradford-born director Dominic Leclerc, of Skins and Shameless fame. A spokesperson said the films will shine a spotlight on the "bold and blistering spirit of young northern characters in British cinema". Mr Leclerc called the undertaking a "filmic deep-dive into the hearts and souls of characters on the cusp of adulthood". The project, part of the museum's ongoing collaboration with Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture, will open with the 2023 coming-of-age drama How to Have Sex. The "landmark" British comedy-drama East is East, which was set and partly filmed in Bradford, and explores the "tensions of a family navigating identity, tradition and rebellion" in 1970s northern England, will also be shown. Also screening is The Long Day Closes, a semi-autobiographical film from Terence Davies about the inner world of a working-class teenager in post-war Liverpool, and the West Yorkshire rural drama, My Summer of Love. There will also be a screening of the 2007 film Control, a portrait of Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis. Mr Leclerc added: "Poetic, punky and passionate - this season of extraordinary films celebrates the complexity, beauty and wonder of youth, and asks the question: 'what happens when the emotional geography of adolescence intersects with one's regional identity'? "From rural Yorkshire landscapes to the gritty backstreets of Salford, come and take a northern road trip to the heartland of youth." ITV's new "rags to riches" royal drama confirms Natalie Dormer in key role

ITV's new royal drama The Lady has confirmed the casting of Natalie Dormer in a key role. The "rags to riches" tale follows the real-life story of Jane Andrews, the Duchess of York's former royal dresser who was later convicted of murdering her fiancé. It has now been confirmed that Game of Thrones' Dormer will portray Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, opposite How To Have Sex's Mia McKenna-Bruce as Andrews. Related: Best streaming services Outlander's Ed Speleers will play Thomas Cressman, the man whom she falls in love with and eventually murders. Other stars include Life on Mars' Philip Glenister, Outnumbered's Claire Skinner, Gavin & Stacey's Laura Aikman, Minx's Ophelia Lovibond, Happy Valley's Mark Stanley, Litvinenko's Daniel Ryan and Skins' Sean Teale. The Lady "charts the rise and fall" of Andrews, "whose rags to riches fairy tale fell apart when she was convicted of murder", according to the synopsis. Related: The synopsis continues: "Once a young working-class girl, Jane answered an advertisement in a magazine and to the astonishment of her friends and family, became the Duchess of York's dresser at Buckingham Palace. "Moving amongst the highest social circles in Britain, Jane managed to secure a place in the upper-classes, only to lose her job with the Duchess after nine years of service. "Still reeling from her fall from grace, Jane went on to meet charismatic businessman Thomas Cressman and fell deeply in love. Soon cracks began to develop in the romance Jane had pinned all her hopes on, with disastrous consequences." Related: The four-part series has been written by Humans' Debbie O'Malley and directed by A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story's Lee Haven Jones. Speaking previously of the project, O'Malley noted that behind the headlines of Andrews' 2001 conviction "lay a much more complex, painful and thought-provoking story", namely "an exploration of female ambition and human frailty and a devastating chain of events that ended in the taking of a man's life". "And this story, tied up with our national preoccupation with class and our ongoing obsession with the Royal family, feels every bit as relevant now as it did twenty years ago," she added. The Lady will air on ITV. You Might Also Like PS5 consoles for sale – PlayStation 5 stock and restocks: Where to buy PS5 today? IS MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 THE BEST IN THE SERIES?
