Georgetown Prep sweeps Landon to earn a sixth straight IAC baseball title

Georgetown Prep extended its reign over the Interstate Athletic Conference Saturday, earning a sixth consecutive league title with a dominant 17-0 home victory over Landon in Bethesda. The Hoyas left no doubt early. The Bears were forced to switch pitchers in the middle of the first inning as Prep came out eager to finish off the best-of-three series in its second game. The Hoyas won Game 1, 9-4, on the road Wednesday.

2025 College Basketball Crown highlights: Boise State, Nebraska move on to semis

The quarterfinals of the new College Basketball Crown began Wednesday with two highly anticipated matchups that followed a similar script. First up, Boise State took down Butler in a high-scoring 100-93 affair. Despite the Broncos leading most of the way, the Bulldogs hung around all game. After that, scrappy Georgetown put up a fight against Nebraska but couldn't complete a comeback like it had in the first round. The Broncos and Cornhuskers each earned $50K and now advance to play each other in the semifinals. The second round will continue Thursday with two more quarterfinal matchups airing on FS1. The winners will advance to the semifinals on Saturday, with the championship game taking place on Sunday, April 6. Those three games will be available on FOX. Here are the highlights from Wednesday! The Cornhuskers are off to the semifinals after holding off spirited Georgetown, 81-69. Brice Williams and Malik Mack lived up to the hype from their first-round games. Williams followed up his 30-point performance with 28 points on Wednesday night, another team high. Mack, who scored 37 points on Monday night despite being under the weather, paced the Hoyas with 25 points. Mack played every minute of Georgetown's tournament games. However, he couldn't lead the Hoyas to another rally against a more balanced and deeper Nebraska team. At halftime, Nebraska led 34-24, and Williams was the only player on either team in double figures (10 points on 3-of-7 shooting). Mack looked as if he didn't have his legs with just two points on 1-of-8 shooting at the break, including 0-for-3 from the perimeter. In the second half, Mack came alive, totaling 23 points and draining four 3-pointers on five attempts. He helped keep the Hoyas within striking distance. Even after Nebraska built a 19-point lead, Georgetown kept fighting back. The Hoyas got within eight points a couple of times, but Fred Hoiberg's team was never rattled. Juwan Gary finished with a double-double for the Huskers (17 points, 10 rebounds), while Connor Essegian had seven points, all in the first half. On Monday night, the Hoyas played with just five scholarship players. They got one more back on Wednesday when Kayvaun Mulready returned to the lineup. He scored nine points off the bench. Caleb Williams (not the football player) contributed with nine points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals, but he fouled out with 9:33 remaining, another blow to Georgetown's depth. Boise State entered the Crown as a favorite to win the tournament and with a perfect record when scoring 80 or more points. Through two games, Boise State is still a favorite to win the whole thing and is now 15-0 when scoring 80 or more points. The Broncos prevailed over the Bulldogs 100-93 as both teams shot the lights out of the ball. Boise State connected on 60.3% of its field goals and made 11 3-pointers, while Butler was 57.6% from the field and hit 13 treys. Although Boise State led for most of the game, Butler never quite went away. The Bulldogs trailed by 10 points at the half but cut that deficit in half early in the second half. Yet every time they got close, the Broncos had a response. For Boise State, Tyson Degenhart recorded his 2,000th career point in a 19-point outing. Javan Buchanan, who came in off the bench, led the Broncos with 27 points, while Alvaro Cardenas also had 19 points. The game's highest scorer, however, was Butler's Finley Bizjack, who put up a career-high 30 points. He was nearly unstoppable from the 3-point line, going 6-of-9 from behind the arc. He was even 8-for-8 from the free-throw line, despite the best efforts of Utah super fan Corey, who switched his allegiance to Boise State on Wednesday. This time, his screams didn't bother Butler quite as much. As Gus Johnson said on the broadcast, "Nobody beats the Biz!" Well, except for Boise State, who now moves on to the semifinals. Malik Mack scores 37 as Georgetown edges past Washington State

Malik Mack scored a career-high 37 points and undermanned Georgetown held on to beat Washington State 85-82 in the first round of the College Basketball Crown on Monday night in Las Vegas. Jordan Burks recorded his second double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds as Georgetown (18-15) advanced to Wednesday's second quarterfinal game versus Nebraska (18-14). Georgetown won its first postseason game since the 2015 NCAA Tournament. LeJuan Watts led Washington State (19-15) with 22 points while Ethan Price added 16. Watts missed two free throws with 3.9 seconds left but the Cougars secured the rebound and Rihards Vavers missed a 3-pointer as time expired. Georgetown used a 9-0 run to take its first lead of the second half at 74-72 on two Caleb Williams free throws with 4:47 left. After a Washington State miss, Mack nailed a 3-pointer and the Hoyas took their largest lead of the game at 77-72. Washington State answered with six straight free throws to regain the lead at 78-77 with 3:01 left. Burks' putback of a rare Mack miss gave the Hoyas an 81-80 lead with 1:34 left. After a defensive stop on the other end, Curtis Williams Jr.'s layup put the Hoyas up 83-80 with 41 seconds left. Watts raced down the court and his layup cut the Hoyas' lead to 83-82 with 38 seconds left. Mack shot 13 of 24 from the field -- including 8 of 12 from deep. Both Mack and Burks played all 40 minutes. An hour before the scheduled tip time, Georgetown put out an update on social media that a 'health incident' would leave the Hoyas with a limited roster against the Cougars. Micah Peavy, who led the Hoyas with 17.2 points per game and earned a spot on the All-Big East first team, missed his first game of the season while Jayden Epps (12.8 ppg) was also absent from the Hoyas backcourt. Georgetown used eight players in the first half, including three walk-ons in Austin Montgomery, Hasham Asadallah and Michael Van Raaphorst. Washington State, which led for most of the first half, took a 35-25 lead after a 3-pointer from Vavers with 4:07 left before halftime. It was the Cougars' first double-digit lead of the game and capped a 7-0 run. Georgetown pulled to within 35-34 after a flurry of three 3-pointers from Mack in a span of 47 seconds. Washington State led 42-39 at halftime despite 20 points from Mack, who made 5 of 7 3-point attempts before the break. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2023 - All Rights Reserved

Georgetown, Washington State face off in College Basketball Crown

Georgetown and Washington State will meet in the first round of the inaugural College Basketball Crown postseason tournament on Monday at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It will be the first ever meeting between the programs. Georgetown (17-15), which has clinched its first winning record since the 2018-19 season, will look a bit different in its first postseason action since the 2021 NCAA Tournament. "We're not going out there with a full deck, but we're going out there with some guys who are eager," said Hoyas coach Ed Cooley on Friday. "We're excited. Any time you can play in the postseason and this being the first ever Crown opportunity to play against another league. We'll try and represent the Big East the best way we can. We're excited to go, and we'll see where we end up." Since losing in the first round of the Big East tournament to DePaul nearly three weeks ago, the Hoyas have lost starter Drew Fielder to the transfer portal. The 6-foot-11 sophomore, originally a Providence recruit who then followed Cooley to Georgetown, started 31 games this season while averaging 7.1 points and 5.4 rebounds. Big East All-Freshman selection Thomas Sorber, who missed the final few weeks after requiring turf toe surgery, has entered his name in the 2025 NBA Draft with the option of returning to school. Sorber averaged 14.5 points and a team-high 8.5 rebounds in 24 games. Washington State (19-14) reached the postseason in coach David Riley's first season and its the fourth straight overall as a program. Just like the Hoyas, Riley's Cougars will be without two key players as starters Nate Calmese and Isaiah Watts entered the transfer portal since their West Coast Conference tournament loss to San Francisco on March 9. Calmese led Washington State in scoring (15.2 ppg) and assists (4.4 apg) while Watts averaged 11 points and shot 34.8 percent from 3-point range. Riley gave his thoughts on Tuesday about how a team can prepare to play while keeping an eye on the future with the portal. "It's busy," Riley said. "I think it's fun for me as a coach. There's never a month that's the same. Every month is something different and we have to go recruit players in the portal and we have to dive in and get to know all these people as humans over a week which is crazy in it of itself. It's a fun time." Georgetown, which hasn't won a postseason game since defeating Eastern Washington in the 2015 NCAA Tournament, is one of four Big East schools in the Crown while the Cougars are joined by Oregon State of the WCC. Washington State won a game in the 2024 NCAA Tournament, its first since 2008. Monday's winner will advance to play the winner of Nebraska and Arizona State on Wednesday in the quarterfinals. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2023 - All Rights Reserved
