D.L. Hughley on California's Impact and Political Precedents
Source: REACH Media / Radio One Digital 'Without California, the United States of America would be little more than Venezuela,' quips comedian and commentator D.L. Hughley in his segment 'Notes From The GED Section.' It's a bold statement, but one with substantial weight when you consider California's massive influence on the nation's economy and infrastructure. Hughley uses this thought-provoking commentary to underscore the critical role that California plays in sustaining the United States, while addressing the political dynamics and federal overreach that target the state. Hughley dismantles common narratives about California, emphasizing its strengths. The state is the fourth-largest economy in the world, with unparalleled contributions like producing 60% of America's produce and supporting 14% of the nation's manufacturing. 'At one point, one out of every four jobs created in America came from California,' he notes, challenging critics who downplay the state's relevance. Yet, despite its undeniable importance, California often finds itself in political crosshairs. 'You might not like California, but you like your lights on,' Hughley jabs, pointing out the resources the state provides to others, even to those who disparage it. Hughley critiques federal actions like deploying the National Guard to California as political theater, aimed at creating unnecessary confrontations. He draws a striking parallel, saying, 'The last time a president did something like this was Lyndon B. Johnson in Alabama, but for desegregation. Donald Trump sent the National Guard to California because he is a racist.' This comparison underscores the dangerous precedent such federal actions set, where political grudges risk undermining the country's unity and principles. Hughley also highlights California's progressive stance while acknowledging its leadership in Republican representation, debunking stereotypes. His reflection lays bare the imbalance in political discourse and calls for a deeper understanding of how federal and state politics shape lives nationwide. Ultimately, Hughley invites his audience to contemplate the broader implications of targeting a state so foundational to America's success. As he puts it, 'Whether you like it or not is not the issue,' but recognizing California's significance should be. SEE ALSO

D.L. Hughley on the Slow Boil of Democracy's Decline
Source: REACH Media / Radio One Digital 'Turning the heat up little by little is how you cook a crab. It's also how you destroy democracy.' These jarring words from comedian and radio host D.L. Hughley, shared in his segment 'Notes From The GED Section,' provide a sobering perspective on the growing normalization of turmoil in America. Through the metaphor of cooking a crab, Hughley highlights how societal complacency allows injustices and systemic failures to escalate unchecked. Hughley paints a picture of how slow, incremental changes can lead to people accepting the previously unthinkable. He compares it to cooking a live crab, explaining, 'If you threw the crabs in scalding hot water, of course mayhem would ensue … but when you turn the heat up a little at a time, they don't realize what's happening.' This analogy speaks to the gradual erosion of democratic values and public outrage, as shocking events become part of the daily backdrop. 'We're used to it,' Hughley says repeatedly, citing examples like children being separated from parents, innocent people being deported, and political leaders prioritizing dismantlement over progress. With each disturbing event, he notes how society grows desensitized. Punishing policies and outrageous claims no longer provoke the level of outrage they once did, making the abnormal seem normal. 'The speed that we got so used to it amazes me,' he reflects. Hughley's commentary challenges listeners to confront this complacency. 'We are used to masked men snatching people off the streets, never to be heard from or seen again,' he remarks. Yet, as he reminds us, this desensitization isn't accidental. It's the result of systemic efforts to turn up the heat gradually, eroding resistance and accountability. This thought-provoking metaphor underscores the importance of vigilance. By allowing these small yet consequential injustices to simmer, society risks being cooked in a democracy that once seemed unshakable. Hughley's words serve as a call to action, urging us to recognize the heat rising before it's too late. SEE ALSO

D.L. Hughley Claps at Saquon Barkley For Golfing With Trump, But Did He Go Too Far?
D.L. Hughley did not mince words when speaking about the Black folks whom he says pander to President Donald there's one Super Bowl LIX champion he's calling out specifically. During a recent interview, Hughley slammed Saquon Barkley for attending the Philadelphia Eagles' team visit to the White House. 'I think it's not just political,' Hughley began after host Harvey Levin mentioned how 14 players opted out of the visit. 'What Donald Trump has done and is doing to Black history is unsavory and is undeniable. [...] Trump is deliberately trying to erase Black people history, for whatever quest. He's elevating Christopher Columbus again... so he's deliberately doing things to Black people that isn't just political. And any Black man that does it, is obviously going to catch some type of heat. When a Black person does it, I can always tell what they are...' Co-host Charles Latibeaudiere interjected, asking Hughley to clarify his statements. 'Saquon Barkley, he had a girlfriend who threw around the N-word a lot, and said she wasn't a gold digger and she wasn't messing with no broke N-words. He look like that kind of guy that's indifferent to what Black people go through. It's just true. And I notice that to be consistent with a lot of Black people who show up [at Trump events],' Hughley replied. He continued blasting Barkley, describing how he's 'not shocked he dated a white girl who threw the N-word around. He looks like the kind of guy who would do it, and that guy doesn't care about Black people.' tiktok-7498858319663189290 Barkley was previously criticized for golfing with Trump over the weekend at the Trump National Golf Club in New Jersey. He didn't take the backlash lightly, taking to X to address naysayers. 'lol some people are really upset cause I played golfed and flew to the White House with the PRESIDENT. Maybe I just respect the office, not a hard concept to understand,' he tweeted. Barkley added how he played golf with Barack Obama last October. 'Just golfed with Obama not too long ago…and look forward to finishing my round with Trump! Now ya get out my mentions with all this politics and have amazing day,' the post ended. Barkley's outing with Trump came days after his teammate, Jalen Hurts, avoided speaking about visiting the White House at the Time100 gala on Friday. 'Are you planning on visiting the White House next week?' Hurts was asked on Friday (April 25) by a reporter. His response? A simple, 'Umm,' before looking around, staring at the camera, and walking away. He did not attend. tiktok-7497232177835396383 Hughley added: 'I think he [Trump] seeks them out, just like water seeks its own level... those kind of [Black] men and women easily show up at these events and they are great for camera fodder.' 'Can't you separate the honor [being invited to the White House] from the person?' Levin asked Hughley. 'You can't squeeze honor out of the unhonorable. He's an unhonorable man who insults Black people, insults our history on a daily basis.... We're talking about somebody erasing Harriet Tubman, Tuskegee Airmen, and disbanding Black history.' Local event aims to bring awareness of victims of abuse
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The Clothesline Project is meant to bring awareness to victims of abuse and violence, and next Friday, an event in Youngstown is planned for the organization. A visual display of shirts will highlight violence statistics. Each shirt is created by a survivor or someone who has lost a loved one to violence. The project aims to raise awareness, as well as honor the strength of survivors. Those who attend won't need to bring anything. Shirts, markers and paints will be provided. Jacqueline Hughley, Compass Family Services' victim services manager, talked about how the event helps in the healing process. 'It is important because so many people who have been victimized do not speak up about it, so this is a way for them to express themselves on a t-shirt, express their thoughts, talk about being a survivor, you know, and know that they're not alone. There are so many others going through the same thing,' said Hughley. The event is sponsored by Compass Family Services. It is from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, April 25, at Swanston Commons at 246 Broadway Ave., across from Wick Park. It's free to attend. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] On March 10, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office arrested Kendasja Hughley, who is accused of giving Benadryl to children to make them go to sleep, for reckless conduct. An investigation found that the worker gave Benadryl to children without their parents consent on March 3 and March 5 before nap time. Hughley's charges have since been upgraded to include six counts of cruelty to children in the first degree and eight counts of simple battery. Weeks later, deputies arrested Cathy Stevick, the church daycare's director, and Shelby Wood, a daycare teacher. Investigators charged Wood with one count of cruelty to children and one count of simple battery. Stevick is charged with failure to report child abuse. The daycare has until Wednesday to appeal with the Office of State Administrative Hearings. If there is no appeal filed, the daycare will close for good.
