Aussies issued warning ahead of King's Birthday long weekend after two separate horror crashes overnight
Aussie drivers travelling over the long weekend have been warned to take extra care on the roads after two 'confronting' road accidents overnight. Emergency services were called to one crash at an intersection of the Hume Highway and Worth Street at Chullorah in Sydney 's southwest at about 8.10pm on Thursday. Police were told a truck and a hatchback collided, and one of the car's passengers - a 16-year-old boy - tragically died at the scene. The driver of the hatchback, who is believed to be the teenager's mother, was taken to Westmead Hospital in critical condition after being treated at the scene. Another boy travelling in the hatchback was also in critical condition and taken to Westmead Children's Hospital. A third passenger in the hatchback, believed to be a man, was taken to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition. NSW Police said the truck driver, a man whose has yet to be identified, was taken to Bankstown Hospital for mandatory testing. A crime scene has been established and the Hume Highway was closed eastbound on Thursday evening but has since been cleared. NSW Police launched an investigation and a report will be prepared for the coroner. A man also died after a separate single vehicle crash on Back Henty Road in Henty, just under an hour from Albury, about two hours after the first incident. Murray River police officers were called out to the area at about 10pm where they found a ute had crashed into a tree. The driver and only occupant, a 20-year-old man, died at the scene. Police established a crime scene and a report will be prepared for the coroner. NSW Police Assistant Commissioner, David Driver issued a warning on Friday to people across the state to take care on the roads over the long weekend. '(These incidents are) very confronting and we certainly extend our condolences to the family who have lost loved ones,' he told Nine News. Drivers have been warned to be careful on the roads ahead of the long weekend 'We're conducting our statewide operation over the next three days where our focus will be on speeding, drink driving, drug driving, restraint offences and distraction fatigue. 'We're asking everyone who's travelling this weekend to take extra care, particularly if you're driving in unfamiliar areas.' He also warned that there are a number of areas impacted by the extreme flooding from a fortnight ago which could mean road conditions have changed. 'We want everyone to be patient and they need to expect heavy traffic,' he said.

Teenager killed, another fighting for life after horror crash in Greenacre, Sydney
A teenager has died and another is fighting for life after a horrific two-vehicle crash in western Sydney overnight. Emergency services were called to the intersection of Hume Highway and Worth Street just after 8pm on Thursday following reports of a collision between a hatchback and a truck. One of the passengers of the car, a 16-year-old boy, died at the scene. Another young boy in the car at the time was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Westmead Children's Hospital. He remains in a critical condition. The hatchback's female driver is also fighting for life, and has been taken to Westmead hospital. The hatchback's third passenger, a man, was taken to the same hospital in a stable condition. The male truck driver was taken to Bankstown Hospital for mandatory testing. A witness described the scene as 'best to avoid' as ongoing roadworks and traffic were 'compounding the congestion'. 'Lots of cops, ambos, tow trucks,' they wrote. 'Traffic lights are also down with incident response on the scene.' A crime scene has been established as investigations remain ongoing as of 5.50am on Friday morning. Commuters are being urged to avoid the area, with the Hume Highway remaining closed in an eastbound direction and one lane closed heading west. Diversions are in place via Muir Road and Worth Street. A report will be prepared for the Coroner. Anyone with information or a dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stopper on 1800 333 000.

Arsonist caught on camera setting himself alight while trying to burn down restaurant
The moment an arsonist sets himself alight during a botched attack on a Middle Eastern restaurant has been captured on camera. Footage from inside Al Marjan in Melbourne, Australia, shows the man pouring liquid on benchtops and furniture before setting the restaurant - and himself - on fire. The crook, wearing a black hooded jumper, inadvertently doused himself in petrol as he used a jerry can to pour the accelerant all over the restaurant. In the footage, the arsonist is seen dropping to the ground in an attempt to extinguish himself before stumbling several times as he raced out the door. The man had arrived in a silver Mercedes Benz E240, which he rammed through the door of the restaurant to get inside. Detectives believe the incident is linked to the state's illegal tobacco trade and have established a special taskforce to catch those responsible. 'This is yet another example of just how unpredictable fire is and the inherent dangers of arson,' Taskforce Lunar Detective Inspector Graham Banks said. 'It is probable this man will have needed some kind of treatment for significant burns.' Emergency services were called to the Al Marjan restaurant, on the Hume Highway, shortly after the man had fled. Detectives said the Mercedes used to ram through the restaurant's door has since been recovered with cloned license plates.

Shocking moment arsonist sets himself on fire during restaurant attack in new CCTV footage
An alleged arsonist has been captured accidentally setting himself alight during a targeted attack at a South Melbourne restaurant last year. In crystal clear CCTV footage released by police on Wednesday, a man is seen entering the Al Marjan restaurant in Campbellfield after ramming through the door in a silver Mercedes Benz E240. The man, dressed in black with his hood pulled up, then pours accelerant out of a red jerry can across the floor of the restaurant and the bar, slipping and sliding around in the process. He does not seem to take notice of the liquid splashing back on him. On the way back to the waiting car, he sets the accelerant on fire – and doesn't make it very far before the flames catch on the leg of his tracksuit. He is forced to drop and roll around on the wet ground in a desperate attempt to extinguish the fire, before fleeing in the Mercedes. Emergency services were called to reports of a fire at the Hume Highway business shortly after 4.30am on May 21, 2024. The Hume Highway business only sustained minor damage in what turned out to be the first of two fiery attacks on the Al Marjan business – targeted again on November 6. Police hope the CCTV will help identify the man involved. 'This is yet another example of just how unpredictable fire is and the inherent dangers of arson – it is probable this man will have needed some kind of treatment for significant burns,' Taskforce Lunar Detective Inspector Graham Banks said. 'We are conscious that those involved in lighting the fires are likely the puppets for those pulling the strings in this syndicate, and they are being left with serious – or life changing, as we've seen previously – burn injuries. 'Arson attacks put not only people's livelihoods at stake but also people's lives. 'We are doing everything we can to bring this dispute and the criminality linked to it to an end, but we need the community's support and assistance.' He is described as approximately 170-175cms tall with a large build and an olive complexion. The Mercedes was bearing cloned plates at time and has since been recovered. Anyone who recognises the man or with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
