A viral June 17 TikTok video from @hunttonn details the moment the woman rescued a dog that was trapped in two garbage bags. The woman, Hunter Tonn, was on a walk in Brooklyn, N.Y., when she heard yapping noises coming from a garbage area. When she and her partner investigated further, she found a small dog that "had been tied up in 2 heavy duty trash bags and thrown away for garbage collection," per the caption of the clip. "As we were taking him home to give him a bath, he started seizing, so we immediately took him to the ER vet," Tonn wrote. "Once we got there, they said he had a broken jaw and probably some neurological damage." She added in the video that the dog, whom she named Scrappy, was receiving treatment for his injuries. Tonnn also encouraged people to share the video to "bring the little guy justice." The clip, which has garnered over 1.9 million views, shows Tonn emotionally walking on the sidewalk with the garbage bag containing the dog. The footage includes shots of the distressed dog shown through a hole in the bag. Later, the ailing canine appears wrapped in a black towel on Tonn's lap in a car. An earlier video shows the animal's rescue, during which Tonn cuts through a garbage bag and finds another garbage bag inside. She pulls the second bag out and rips it open, revealing the dog. "On our walk last night, we heard whimpering coming from this trash bag. We opened it up to find this sweet guy totally discarded," she captioned the post. "He was in really bad shape, and it was very obvious this was intentional." Tonn has received criticism for "taking too long" to open the garbage bags during the rescue, to which she responded with a video, explaining that she was concerned that there were rats inside. "We were like 80% sure that this was a rat," she said. "Of course, we wanted to get it open just in case it was something else, like a dog, but we were not confident it was a dog at all." Tonn continued: "Just because it wasn't a rat doesn't mean he's not going to bite me. It doesn't mean it doesn't have rabies. I don't want to have rabies. I'm not interested in that." She added that she was also concerned for the dog's safety. "We were next to a very busy intersection, so the last thing I want is to tear this dog out of here, and he bolts. He bolts into the intersection, and now he has four broken legs. So we were trying to be very careful," she said. The woman spoke to Newsweek about the public attention the rescue has received. "I am really grateful that the video blew up because now so many people have gotten to see and love Scrappy," she told the outlet. "It's really heartwarming, especially after finding him totally discarded—to see all of that love from strangers on the internet." According to the outlet, Scrappy required "costly medical treatment" for his recovery and was surrendered over to the veterinarian who provided it. Read the original article on People
