‘Isolated in nature': Horry County official says no public threat remains in aftermath of Little River charter boat shooting

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — As the investigation into Sunday night's mass shooting on a chartered party boat in Little River continued Wednesday without an arrest, an Horry County Police Department spokesperson reiterated that it was an isolated incident. The shooting aboard the Hurricane II, based in Calabash, North Carolina, occurred while the boat was docked and wounded 11 people, three of whom remained in the hospital on Tuesday, Horry County Police Chief Kris Leonhardt said at a news conference on Tuesday. News13 asked Horry County officials on Wednesday for an update on the search for the shooter, information about evidence and whether the public should be concerned about safety in the wake of the shooting. 'Based upon various incident details pertinent to the investigation, the shooting is believed to be isolated in nature,' Horry County police spokesperson Mikayla Moskov said. 'There is currently no intel to suggest the incident has the potential to expand beyond what already occurred Sunday.' Asked why the police department waited until Tuesday — two days after the incident — to speak about the shooting publicly at a news conference, Moskov said information and updates are being released when possible. Moskov added that the investigation is 'active and ongoing,' and that 'details about evidentiary items in any active and ongoing case would not be available for release.' Leonhardt said Tuesday that the investigation is more complex because many of those on the boat were from out of town. Also on Wednesday, the U.S. Coast Guard provided News13 with information about the Hurricane II and its captain. The agency was not involved in responding to the initial incident. 'The Coast Guard attended the vessel on Monday and verified there was no resultant damage from the incident that occurred the prior evening,' a spokesman said in an email. 'The vessel had been under the control of a qualified master who holds a U.S. Coast Guard-issued merchant mariner credential that corresponds to the size and operation of the HURRICANE II.' The Coast Guard spokesman said the number of people on the boat — 120 passengers and four crews, according to Horry County police — was within allowable limits. News13 has reached out to Coast Guard Sector North Carolina for more information about the boat, including its certificate of inspection. Coast Guard Sector Charleston is also conducting a 'comprehensive investigation' into the incident. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the HCPD tip line at 843-915-8477. * * * Dennis Bright is the Digital Executive Producer at News13. He joined the team in May 2021. Little River shooting: Gunfire erupted after charter boat altercation, video from crime scene surfaces

A shooting at Little River took place following acharter boat "altercation" that erupted into gunfire in South Carolina on Sunday, May 25. At least 11 people were injured in the incident. Now, a video from the crime scene has surfaced on social media. The clip shows several people on the charter boat before the shooting took place. Meanwhile, the Horry County Police Department shared an update on Facebook, saying the shooting remains under investigation. 'It has been determined that 10 individuals sustained confirmed gunshot wounds in the incident, and one other reported an unknown non-gunfire-related injury,' the post reads. 'Of those, the worst of the injured are in critical but stable condition at area hospitals.' Police said that it appears as though the shooting was an 'isolated incident' that took place after 'an altercation during a private Memorial Day weekend gathering on a charter boat.' They added, 'Detectives continue to work to identify the person or persons responsible for the incident. As the shooting is believed to be an isolated incident, there is currently no associated risk to the community.' Harold Wiegel, a partner of nearby business Myrtle Beach Adventures, said that shooting erupted on the marina just as passengers had docked. "When they got off the boat, they just started shooting each other," Wiegel, whose son lives near the marina and heard the shooting, told NBC News. Wiegel identified the boat as the Hurricane, which is operated by Little River Fishing Fleet. Horry County police identified the boat as Hurricane II, adding that investigators were still working to find "the ownership of or company coordinating the charter." Myrtle Beach police said in a separate statement that a North Myrtle Beach police officer sustained injuries after his gun accidentally fired. The officer was wounded in the leg and was later stabilized at a hospital.

Little River shooting on party boat leaves more than 11 people injured. What we know

At least 11 people have been transported to the hospital after a shooting that took place in Little River late Sunday night. Horry County Police responded to a shooting about 10 p.m. on Watson Avenue, according to a Facebook post. HCPD said that 11 people were taken to the hospital by Horry County Fire Rescue and others were arriving to the hospital by personal vehicles. The shooting took place at the dock in that area, according to Horry County spokesperson Mikayla Moskov. The marina and docks are currently closed. It appears the shooting happened on a boat. Police were investigating onboard the Hurricane II party boat by the docks. Crime scene tape is across the entrance to the parking lot. Police said it is believed to be an isolated incident. However, it is unclear what took place or what led to the shooting. Neighbors reported seeing police riding in boats around the Intracoastal Waterway in the area. Resident Charleen Rodgers said she didn't hear any gunshots but heard sirens. When she came out, she heard the sirens and police started directing traffic at the corner of Watson and Baldwin avenues. 'I've never seen nothing like this,' she said. Other neighbors said they also heard the shots and thought it was fireworks until the police started showing up. Neighbors estimated at least 50 officers were in the area at one point. No arrests have been made, Moskov said. This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
