The logline: In the special, Roberts will revisit the streets of her hometown, Pass Christian, Mississippi and speak with residents whose lives were upended in the wake of one of the deadliest and costliest natural disasters in U.S. history. The program will reflect on the staggering destruction left behind, the resilience of those who stayed, and the stories of hope that emerged from tragedy. Viewers will also 'see how the Gulf Coast has transformed over the past two decades, from rebuilding neighborhoods to where it is today.' Roberts will be joined by survivors, first responders, and others who witnessed the devastation with their personal memories. Robin Roberts to revisit New Orleans, Mississippi 20 years after Hurricane Katrina

Twenty years after Hurricane Katrina devastated parts of the Gulf Coast, " Good Morning America" co-anchor Robin Roberts is returning to the region to document its recovery after the storm. In her new special, "Hurricane Katrina: 20 Years After the Storm with Robin Roberts," Roberts, a Gulf Coast native, will look at how Katrina has shaped the region and how the local communities -- including her hometown of Pass Christian, Mississippi -- have come together to rebuild. The special will air Friday, Aug. 29, at 8 p.m. ET, on ABC and stream the next day on Hulu and Disney+ for bundle subscribers, Roberts announced Tuesday on "GMA." "It is hard to believe it's been 20 years," Roberts said on "GMA" while reflecting on the "damage and heartache" the region suffered. It was on Aug. 29, 2005, that Katrina slammed the Gulf Coast as a Category 3 hurricane, becoming one of the five deadliest hurricanes in United States history and causing over $100 billion in damage, according to the National Weather Service. Roberts' on-the-ground reporting at the time of Katrina showed the devastation the storm brought to Mississippi and Louisiana, and the early efforts to rebuild. In "Hurricane Katrina: 20 Years After the Storm," Roberts returns to New Orleans to speak with musicians, including Grammy-award winner Harry Connick Jr., about the return of the city's music and culture scenes, including its beloved Jazz Fest. Traveling to her hometown of Pass Christian, Roberts spoke with the town's former mayor and visited her former high school and beloved local spots. Tune into "Hurricane Katrina: 20 Years After the Storm with Robin Roberts" on Friday, Aug. 29 at 8 p.m. ET, on ABC. Stream the next day on Hulu and Disney+ for bundle subscribers.
