The Egyptian pavilion at the Cannes Film Market (Marché du Film) earned top honors, securing the Best Pavilion Design Award in 2025. This coveted recognition highlights Egypt's superior design, dynamic programming, and successful visitor interaction among its global peers. The Egyptian pavilion, jointly organized by the Cairo International Film Festival, El Gouna Film Festival, and the Egyptian Film Export Committee (EFEC), succeeded in providing an integrated experience that reflects a collaborative spirit in orchestrating events which seamlessly blend cinematic promotion with impactful professional outreach to global filmmakers. The President of the Cairo International Film Festival, Hussein Fahmy, expressed his happiness at winning the award, stating: 'This achievement further confirms the excellence the Egyptian pavilion has achieved in the market, as it was designed and its activities organized based on a clear vision aimed at highlighting the diverse Egyptian cinema.' 'We were eager to offer interactive and professional activities that bring together Egyptian and international filmmakers, reflecting a spirit of cooperation and partnership we believe in. This achievement is not just a culmination of our joint efforts, but also a platform to enhance the international presence of Egyptian cinema and support the film industry in Egypt.' He added, 'This achievement further confirms the excellence the Egyptian pavilion has achieved in the market, as it was designed and its activities organized based on a clear vision aimed at highlighting the diverse Egyptian cinema.' The pavilion witnessed a variety of activities, including discussion panels, pitching sessions, and workshops aimed at fostering cinematic cooperation and bolstering regional and international film production. Egypt's presence at Cannes Film Market wins top honour for design, programming, and industry engagement. May 18, 2025 The Egyptian pavilion at Cannes Film Market, headed by a joint cooperation between El Gouna Film Festival, Cairo International Film Festival and the Egyptian Film Commission, has won the award for Best Pavilion during the 77th Cannes Film Festival. Awarded over competing pavilions from 150 nations, the recognition highlights the pavilion's design, curated programming, and strategic networking opportunities offered to Arab and international filmmakers. "This award is a global recognition of the position Egyptian cinema occupies today, and of the continuous efforts we make to represent it in international contexts," Hussein Fahmy, President of Cairo International Film Festival, said. 'We made sure that the pavilion reflects the spirit of cooperation and openness to the world through a program full of dialogue, and cultural and artistic interaction, and represents a new step for Egypt's presence in the global film industry.' Held annually in parallel with the Cannes Film Festival, Marché du Film is a key space for co-productions, distribution deals, and film financing.

In his remarks, Fahmy emphasized that Hollywood is no longer the sole epicenter of global cinema, citing rising competition from major markets such as China, which is now producing innovative and advanced cinematic models. He added that Egypt is actively seeking to expand its cinematic partnerships across Asian, African, and European markets in pursuit of broader creative cooperation and international openness. Hussein Fahmy at at Cannes: "We Are Rising Again"

Hussein Fahmy The session was held at the main stage of the Palais des Festivals and was organized in collaboration with the Arab Cinema Center and the Marché du Film (MDF\_Cannes). It was moderated by journalist Nick Vivarelli, Variety's correspondent for Italy and the Middle East, and attended by a distinguished group of filmmakers, artists, and industry professionals including actress Yousra, GFF President Samih Sawiris, GFF Executive Director Amr Mansi, Egypt Film Commission GM Ahmed Sami Bedeir, director Morad Mostafa, and producer Sawsan Youssef. In his remarks, Fahmy stated: "Egyptian cinema has gone through many transformations. There was a period of overly commercial production, which led to the exclusion of some films from international festivals. But today, we're witnessing remarkable progress. We have top-tier directors, actors, screenwriters, and cinematographers. This year's strong Egyptian presence at Cannes is proof that we are rising again." He added: "What distinguishes a true artist is having an aware and discerning audience — and that's what Egyptian cinema has. The bond between the artist and their audience is built on mutual trust. That's the secret of our continued success." Fahmy also highlighted the youthful spirit of the Cairo International Film Festival, emphasizing its reliance on emerging talents across departments. He noted the healthy competition between CIFF and El Gouna Film Festival, which has helped rejuvenate the Egyptian film landscape. He pointed to the increasing challenge facing Egyptian festivals with the growing number of well-funded Arab — particularly Gulf — festivals, raising the stakes in securing premieres, juries, and film selections. The session, organized by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF), brings together presidents and directors of FIAPF-accredited film festivals from around the world. The discussion will address the growing challenges facing international film festivals, including financial, operational, and promotional obstacles. It also aims to explore collective initiatives and shared strategies that can contribute to shaping a sustainable future for film festivals globally. On this occasion, Hussein Fahmy emphasized the importance of collaboration between film festivals to confront the current challenges. He noted that Cairo International Film Festival, as the oldest film festival in the Arab world and Africa, is committed to exchanging expertise and strengthening partnerships with international festivals to help develop the film industry in the region. Fahmy added, 'Our participation in this session reaffirms Cairo International Film Festival's pioneering role in supporting the film industry, its commitment to staying aligned with global developments, and its dedication to promoting Egyptian and Arab cinema on the international stage.' Established in 1976, Cairo International Film Festival is one of only 15 festivals worldwide classified as a 'Category A' festival by FIAPF. It is known for its rich program that features Arab and international premieres, in addition to industry activities including workshops, panels, and forums that support filmmakers.
